Hey Friends! I’m back today with my Décor Enthusiast Girls for this month’s Décor Challenge. Each month we pick a theme or a topic to write about that is related to decorating in some way. You can see all my previous Decorating Challenges HERE.
Today we were challenged to come up with a project using a yard or less of fabric. Well, I have a bunch of those already! Good thing because I spent the better part of last week on a yard saling adventure shopping to help furnish a Habitat for Humanity home for one super awesome and very grateful family, so I will be sharing a few of my favorite DIY fabric projects from my archives!
Trust me there is a LOT you can do with less than a yard of fabric!!
One of my favorites is my Toaster Oven Cover I made out of bleached drop cloth I had left over from chairs I slip covered:
Not Your Mother’s Toaster Oven Cover
SO super simple to make (I promise) and it looks much cuter than the appliance alone did. Easy to wash too!
Next up, I used almost the very same concept for this little stool I shared recently:
The cover can easily be removed to throw in the wash as well!
How about this thrifty little project, a Fabric Framed Mirror made from thrift store parts:
That was my final March Madness 2015 project and one that I actually kept for my own space. Imagine all the fabric possibilities!
Another fabric project from last year’s March Madness Series is this round basket I covered with fabric:
That was done with the help of hot glue, and was part of the Swap it Like it’s Hot tour where we all swapped thrift store crap to make over. I got good crap. 🙂
Covering a chair seat is a simple way to update a chair and can easily be done with less than a yard of fabric:
Sewing Chair with a Top Secret Drawer
This was a $5 yard sale ugly duckling but I had to bring it home because the seat had a hidden drawer…how cool is that? I also like to finish my chairs off with piping. I share the sew and NO SEW methods for making it HERE.
Next up is this dresser makeover, also a bit of an ugly duckling but I had high hopes for it:
I may have used a tad more than a yard here, but the fabric adds so much character. I also did the night table to match, and reupholstered a beautiful headboard in this fabric as well.
Another super easy project I did a couple of years ago using this same fabric was this Ballard-Inspired fabric covered garbage can:
Ballard-Inspired Fabric Covered Waste Basket
This started as a cheap plastic can from Kmart!
A yard of drop cloth is also enough to make these drop cloth rosettes that updated this oval thrift store mirror:
I just love the shabby look and feel of these rosettes! See my video tutorial for making those in that post.
Or how about updating a lampshade with fabric? Easy to do!
And finally, find a pretty fabric to use as a backdrop for some of your favorite photos. I used this fabric shower curtain I found at the thrift store to cover this bulletin board:
I cut the bulletin board first to fit this pretty frame. Love the combination!
And there you have it! 10 DIY projects to try using a yard or less of fabric!
BUT WAIT…there’s more! My Décor Enthusiast friends are sharing Fabric projects too!

Christy says
Ha ha you crack me up!! Unfortunately my hydrangeas are pretty much toasted for the season unless I get a few late bloomers before the cold comes. Trying to dry out a few so I can enjoy them a wee bit longer, but those are fall colors now. You can make one of those toaster oven covers…totally easy to do! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says

These are great ideas! You had one great tip some time ago about using shellac — putting it over stain before painting but I can’t seem to find it again. Can you give me an idea of what to do when painting over stain? (or tell me where the tip is hidden?!?!)
Thank you so much!!
Christy says
Hi Sharon! The shellac is only needed if your piece has a stain that will bleed through. Test a small area on the side first, usually cherry and mahogany pieces will bleed through. You can read more about it in my chalk painting tutorial here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ Hope this helps! 🙂
