Hello lovely Friends! I’ve got a cool little makeover to share with y’all today!
On the same trip where I found the large basket I shared a couple of weeks ago, I also picked up this tray:
I rarely pass up a good tray and for $5, all this tray needed was a little TLC, so in the cart it went. The bottom looks like a cool metal, but it’s actually just paper.
I decided instead of trying to remove the paper to get a decent painting surface, I would just cover it up.
Enter these two beauties:
Some see trash, but I brake for this kind of trashy goodness…especially when it can turn this old tray into this charmer:
Hello beautiful.
I first painted the sides and bottom:
Then I cut the old pickets to fit using my miter saw and for the longer pieces, my table saw as well…
Then I whitewashed them, sprayed them with a matte sealer, and used a construction adhesive my hubby had to hold them in place. (I share how I white-wash HERE.) I would have used liquid nails if we had had it on hand.
I love the pattern!
The faux lavender came from Hobby Lobby. This is about $20 worth at 50% off.
The bonus to updating an existing tray verses making one from a frame is the hardware is included. These got a coat of Rustoleum satin white spray paint.
I love the color variation of the white-washed pickets against the bright white sides.
This could be farmhouse or coastal. I have a lot of off white in my home since I was working with finishes that were too hard to change, but I love crisp white.
This is just one of several items I’m working on for my booth that will be perfect for the this gift-giving season! I’ll be sharing all of them over the next few weeks. 🙂
I won’t be posting Thursday since it’s Thanksgiving, so I will meet y’all here back here next week where I’ll be sharing what I did to update this little box:
UPDATE: Check out how I updated this little thrift store box HERE now!

The bottom of the tray was beautiful. Too bad it was paper, I would’ve never guessed that one. The white washed pieces look great, almost have a summer beach feel. It’s so pretty.
I need to look through your posts for a round metal tray make-over.
Christy says
Thanks, Zanetta! I loved the original bottom too until I discovered it was only paper! I have done a metal tray before, but I didn’t blog about it. I just dry-brushed it with white paint (it was gold to start) and it turned out pretty. 🙂

I really like how you changed up the pattern from just straight boards. I think it took more math skills to figure out how to lay it out. Did you have to do anything to the width of any of the boards or did they just fit so perfectly? Great eye, as usual. Hope you have a successful selling season!
Christy says
Thank you, Gina! I did have to cut down the outer pieces to make them fit. 🙂
Annie (Canada) says

I love this tray! Such a great design in the new bottom!
Christy, I owe you a huge THANK YOU! We just did a craft sale last Saturday. I used so many ideas from you: colors, styling, your suggestions for what sells well… everything. We had the BEST sale EVER!!! People were looking for our booth based on what they saw other people carrying away! I never thought WE would have “That Booth”!!! We are SO excited! I’m still laughing too, because my (poor) husband was so skeptical of some of our stuff, and it sold first! Haha! I’ll listen to my gut (and you!) even more next year, and up the guys-don’t-get-it inventory, haha! Thank you a TON. Reading your blog gave me the confidence to go for it! : )
Christy says
WOOHOO!!!! That is AWESOME news, girl!! I didn’t even know you were planning for a craft market, but I’m so thrilled to hear I helped a little lol. I LOVE fairs so much more than having a booth. I miss the interaction with my buyers! Congratulations on a successful sale, my friend! XOXO
