Good morning! Can I just take a moment to say thank you to all of you who stop by here each day to visit? It means the world to me to have you here. I love to read your comments and super sweet emails, and I read and reply to them all! I truly do appreciate each and every one, so thank you!!
Ok who’s up for this dated little doozy today?
What were we all thinking with the hearts? Seriously? The thrift stores are full of pieces just like this.
Well that part of this little shelf luckily was able to be removed…so goodbye, heart!!
I don’t miss it one bit, do you? That instantly updated this functional little shelf.
When I’m thrifting for pieces to redo for my booth, I always try to look for items that have a function. If a buyer can imagine what they’ll do with an item, they will be more likely to buy. I liked that this had a shelf for storage and a bar for hanging a towel, two functions!
I added beadboard to the back of it just like I did with the mini-shelf makeover at the start of this series. It adds so much charm.
I painted this in Behr’s Gray Morning made into chalk paint. For my tutorial on how to paint with chalk paint, visit HERE.
I borrowed this sign from my boys’ bathroom…
It belongs to a set of three you can see HERE.
I love coastal décor.
This shelf has been hanging around my garage for forever. The hearts were really throwing me off, even though I knew I was going to remove that part. Finally I removed it and just painted it white already. I then decided I wanted it to be blue, but I like the little bit of white peeking through.
My point though is that sometimes you just need to start, even if you start in the wrong direction. That’s how many of my projects go and then I’m inspired as I go!
I’ll be back again tomorrow, my friends! I’ll be sharing what I did with this drawer front I made my hubby pull over so I could get off the side of the road:

Thank you Christy for this post. The wrong direction. Oh yes, that happens a lot when I try to make something. And you are so right about the hearts. They were everywhere. But now I see where having the right tools lets you change things up. I never would have thought to cut it off. The beadboard really makes it. Oh and I am looking forward to tomorrow’s post. I have been known to make my sons get out of the car to pick up something off the side of the road. Now when they talk about those times, we all laugh!
Christy K. James says
You are so welcome, Joanne! My oldest and I laugh at some of the things we’ve stopped for as well…can’t pass up perfectly good junk sometimes! 🙂
Angela says
I just love this revamp- one of my favourites for March so far- so pretty and how about how handy it is as a towel holder? Keep them coming please.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Angela! So glad you like this one. 🙂

I see soooooo many of those once popular heart shelves in thrift stores. Thanks for a practical and adorable solution to recycling them.
Christy K. James says
I see them all the time too! How was that ever a trend?? 🙂

i have been holding on to some heart shelves for quite some time because they are real hefty wood shelves just have those dang ugly hearts so thanls for this gonna look at them today xx
Christy K. James says
So many nice pieces have been completely dated by those hearts. I hope there is a way to remove them form yours!
Cecilia says
Christy,
I’ve been enjoying this series but yesterday you really sucked me in with the heart shelf (I have a few hanging out in the garage waiting a redo). I never thought of removing the heart piece; now I’m wondering if mine will come off! Thank you for saying you just need to start…even if it’s the wrong direction. I’m such a procrastinator because I’m not sure if I’m headed the right direction! And with that, I’m headed to the garage to tackle my telephone table! 🙂
BTW, I love how the shelf turned out. Such a pretty color!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Cecilia! Hopefully the hearts can be removed from your pieces. And I start in the wrong direction ALL the time…but it usually leads me to where want to be! 🙂
Tonia L. Conner says
Another cute fix. You’re making me want to get back into this, My problem is my age and I’m good at collecting but it goes to the barn and does not come out.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tonia! I know exactly how that goes…this March Madness series really makes me work through a bunch of to-dos!
Cathryn says
G’day! I have to stay up until after midnight to read your posts, but read them I do! Then I go to sleep and dream … oops, time to do that again. Australia is finished with Wednesday now. Have fun, I am looking forward to Thursday show-and-tell. That drawer front looks so happy …
Christy K. James says
Thank you so much for staying up to read my posts!! My Dad was born and raised in Sydney and we lived on the NW Cape when I was a child. My parents always reminisce about how wonderful those days were. See you tonight! 😉
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says

Hi Christy , Beautiful how They turned out¡¡ I do like hearts …but only in alpine , savoyard decor where they are frequent in fabric… but in this case , it was a really a good idea to remove it…
Kisses from a springly Madrid…tomorrow back to winter as i’ll travel to Alps..
Christy K. James says
Thanks again, sweet Friend! Did your country have a trend with that kind of décor back in the 1980’s? Unfortunately we did! XOXO
Christy K. James says
Oh! and have fun and safe travels!
Helen Holley says
Thank you so much for this post!
I have several thrifty finds with awful heart on all of them. Going to look over them now and see if I can take it off.
Wonderful post!

Marilyn Stein says
Christy, did you know that heart piece was going to come off when you bought it? I see all kinds of dated things when I’m out hunting, but have no idea if they can be dismantled, or just what it would take to do that. Is there anything in particular that folks in my shoes should look for to make that determination? As always you’ve done a wonderful job turning this piece into a beauty.
Christy K. James says
Hi Marilyn and thank you! Yes I did see that it would be able to be removed when I bought it. I know it’s not as easy for some pieces. I was able to see that that whole front piece would be able to be removed, so look for that.
Lisa Thomas says
I love the coastal theme ! The bead board made this even more cozy. Keep up the wonderful transfermating .
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Lisa! Bead board always works wonders. 🙂
Kathi Shelley says
I’m up late, too! Still not used to DST. Love what you did with the heart shelf. I have a bunch of heart cutout stuff, too, but they are little chairs and benches with heart cutouts on the backrests. Cutting them down would really ruin the look, so I’m looking for ideas on how to either incorporate them in a design, or maybe I should “upholster” over them. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Kathi! I love the idea of upholstering over them, or maybe there is a wooden round or oval piece that could be added to the back to cover the heart? I guess it would have to go on both sides. I think your idea is the best solution.
Paula@SweetPea says
Ding! Ding! I see heart shelves all of the time at thrift shops and pass them by. Now I know to look to see if the heart part can be removed.
Christy K. James says
I know, Paula, thrift stores are full of them! Unfortunately most have hearts in the main parts that can’t be removed, but check them just in case! 🙂
Treva says
I’m running a day late but I had to see what you did with this little shelf. It turned out so cute and I love the color.
I have a little shelf with 3 small hearts across the front. After seeing the shelf you finished I’m glad I didn’t find a new home for it.
Thanks for another cute project that I think I might can do.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Treva! And you’re never too late! 🙂
Marie, the Interior Frugalista says

Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I do love color for my outdoor projects! XO
Christy K. James says
Ha ! I though you were talking about the planter duh…yes this is one of my favorite colors, thanks! 🙂
Becky says
Oh wow… I can’t believe what a little ” heart surgery ” did for this shelf! I need to remember this! Nice work!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha “heart surgery” now why didn’t I think of that? Thanks, Becky! 🙂
Desiree White says
I am so happy I found this post!!! I have given away 3 shelves that had hearts on them!!! Now I know what to do when I find them at the thrift store. They are everywhere!!! You are amazing!
Christy says
Awesome and thank you, Desiree!! What were we thinking with those hearts?? 🙂
