Guess what y’all? I’m sharing a makeover today…surprise! I know you weren’t expecting that. 🙂 Okay so maybe you know me too well, but today is not just any ordinary day, it’s Themed Furniture Thursday! Can I get a Woo Hoo? I and a bunch of my talented furniture flippin’ friends get together once a month and share furniture makeovers, but the catch is, there’s a theme! Today’s theme was made for me. Can you guess what it is?? How about I’ll share and then see if you can guess, okay?
I usually do my thrifting on the way to places I really need to be. I run in here, run in there. Quick quick quick. Well last Thursday, I decided to treat myself and have an all day thrifting excursion. It was so fun, one of my favorite ways to spend a day. Of course it’s only fun if you find stuff, am I right? Then it’s NOT fun at all.
Here’s what I dragged home that day:
Lots of goodies! I was on the hunt for more March Madness projects and luckily I found a few. I shared these pics on my Facebook page so some of you may have seen them already.
It was a good day! The dressing table was a Habitat Restore find. They are usually quite pricey in my area. This dressing table was originally $150, but the entire store was 50% off, so I ended up paying $75.
Now I know some of you are cringing at the thought of me painting this gem, but don’t too upset just yet with me just yet. This was not stained, it was painted to look like stain:
Up close it just did not look good at all.
BUT I did try not to paint the whole thing, really I did. I planned to at least leave the top stained, but after I sanded it down, conditioned it, and stained it, it looked terrible:
It looks like this had a veneer top at one time that had been removed, because this was not the gorgeous wood top I was expecting. It looks like a pieced together version that you would find under veneer. Now I understand why this piece had a faux stained paint job before.
So…I decided to paint it:
Painting it also allowed me to marry it to this mirror:
This mirror did not come with this table. I found it at the thrift store for $4.25 several months ago. It looked like it had been painted brown over the stain:
(You can see my to-do pyramid in the mirror. 🙂 )
I thought at the very least I could take the mirror off and use the frame for a chalkboard, but luckily it made a perfect mate for this dressing table!
For this piece, I used Behr’s Ultra Pure White made into chalk paint using this recipe. I distressed this one a bit more than usual using my sander. I like this look for pure white. I sealed it with Annie Sloan’s clear wax.
I kept the original hardware, just sprayed it with Rustoleum’s Blossom White. The drawers were lined using this scrapbook paper and Mod Podge.
I sure wish I had a place for this sweet piece. I don’t think it really works in my dining room. I’m working on a chair for it and then it’s off to the shop!

I hope you enjoyed this makeover. Did you guess what the theme might be, made just for me? Did you guess Shades of White? Then you nailed it! I do love a simple white makeover.

Great makeover, Christy! It’s amazing how the mirror that you previously bought is the perfect fit for this piece. Someone is going to buy this quickly when you put it into your shop.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Paula! I know, right? I’m so glad I didn’t take the mirror apart and use it for a chalkboard as originally planned. I hope it does sell fast! XO
Larissa ~ Prodigal Pieces says
Time and time again I am amazed at how similar we are in our projects, Christy! I have a desk very similar to that vanity and an extra mirror that is the twin to the one you found. I’m pairing them too and hope it comes out as good as yours. 🙂 Your rocked the white!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha that’s why I love everything you create!! Thanks, my sweet Friend!! XO

It’s beautiful and the mirror goes perfectly! Loving the pretty paper you lined the drawers with as well. Couldn’t help but notice the awesome organizer with wood parts & pieces the mirror was leaning against.. Wow, what a collection for creating! XO – Wendi
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Wendi! My Dad used to be a woodworker and built things for years. When he decided to give it up, I benefited…many of those parts and pieces were his. 🙂

When I saw the theme this month I immediately thought of you. I knew you’d rock a fabulous makeover and that you did! Nice find and that mirror looks like it came with the dressing table.
Christy K. James says
Ha ha yes, this was my month! 😀 Thanks, Marie!! XOXO
Becky says
I can’t believe it – I guessed it! Your comment about the white was my clue. : )
Fabulous work! The mirror is an amazing fit with the table.
What a treasure pile you hauled in on your shopping day! We would agree with you absolutely: a second hand trip where you don’t find anything is NOT FUN… on the other hand, a good one is soooo fun! My husband doesn’t get it, but my kids sure do!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha white is totally my theme! That mirror is an amazing match…just loaded it into my booth today. You’d never know they weren’t originally together. And yes, when you don’t find anything thrifting, it is terrible, but when you do…it is awesome!! Glad your kids get it! 🙂

Looks Fabulous Christy! Do you sell the pieces or just keep them for yourself? Great Job.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Wendy! I sell most of them in my booth, but every once in a while I just can’t part with something. 🙂
Shanna Gilbert says
When I saw that you got that piece I knew you would do something fabulous with it! It turned out so gorgeous! Great job Christy!
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Shanna! I wish I had a guest bedroom to set up, this would so go in there! Then I’d roadtrip your way and pick up that desk! 🙂
Breanna says
What a haul! This piece is gorgeous my friend. And I love the lined drawers!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Breanna! It was a bit sad dropping it off at the shop today!
Karen Marie Kedzuch says
Christy,
I just had an oh no moment! I was at a thrift store with a mirror with no mate. Couldn’t think of a way to use it but, it had me going back to look at it several times. Guess what? Your post just gave me the idea of where it belongs in my home. Darn it!
Well back to your lovely piece. Your work is beautiful and your eye for thrifting is spot on. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Happy Creating,
Karen Marie
Christy K. James says
Oh no, Karen! Oh well…next time you’ll know better. Thank you for your sweet words! XO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Ahhh, this is so beautiful, Christy! The mirror looks fantastic with it – a match made in DIY heaven. <3
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jen! I was SO excited to drag this mirror out to see if it would work. SO glad it did! XO
Rose L. says
It definitely looks much improved being painted. Sometimes that is the best choice. I want to let you know that I have difficulty reading your blog. It takes me about 5 minutes to scroll and read it. I think the advertisements slow it down a lot and it is frustrating. I do have that problem with only one other blog.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Rose! This really benefited from painting I think. I’m so sorry to hear that my site is loading slowly for you. Can I ask if you are viewing on a mobile device like a phone or tablet, or on a desktop computer? That will help me trouble shoot the problem. Thank you for letting me know! XO
Jeanette says
Christy, I had to reread a couple of times…I couldn’t believe the mirror wasn’t part of the dresser to begin with. Awesome job!!!!
Christy K. James says
I know, right? It matches so perfectly! Thanks, Jeanette! XO
Lucy @ Patina Paradise says
You find the best stuff at garage sales! And love the match you made with a lonely mirror. I can’t believe someone tried to make it look like a wood finish… so much prettier in white! ;o)
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Lucy! The finish really was not good at all, I love it in white also. 🙂
Amy | Canary Street Crafts says
Stunning!! The mirror looks like it was made for that piece. You did such a beautiful job!
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Amy!! I’m so glad I bought that mirror when I did. 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
White is definitely perfect for you! 🙂 Too bad about the top but it turned out lovely anyway. 🙂
You got a good haul, by the way! I still need to paint all I have before I can go looking again!! lol
xo
Nancy
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Nancy! I was pretty bummed about the stain not working out. Not only did the wood beneath not look pretty at all, but the stain was super super dark like it was just soaking it all up like crazy. I used a wood conditioner but who knows. I’m pleased with the result though. And ha ha I put myself on a thrift store diet and then cleaned my garage and found a bunch of space lol! 🙂
Ashlyn says
What a beautiful transformation!! Looks amazing!! http://www.lovesthefind.com

Christy @ Our Southern Home says
This pieces is just pure perfection! I love the styling. You’ve got a great stash for March Madness! Crushing on that tiered wire basket!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Christy! Would you believe it sold the day after I loaded it into my booth? I needed that! That wire basket was $4.98…I thought about keeping it for staging, but ended up sticking it in my booth as well. 🙂
