Welcome lovely Friends to day #4 of my March Madness, 31 Thrifty Makeovers in 31 Days series! I shared a peek of this antique mirror I found at the thrift store in yesterday’s post:
These old mirrors are SUPER heavy and the back was Falling out, but for $9.98 I snapped it up.
After I painted the frame I went to clean up the mirror to put it back in, and it was so scratched. I know it looks great in the photo above, but that was taken in November back before I turned the mirror loose in my garage! Poor thing never stood a chance.
I ended up replacing it with a chalkboard:
Looks great paired with my sofa table I shared yesterday!
To add a little more function, I added hooks at the top on either side:
I found these at Hobby Lobby, but they were originally black. A little spray paint fixed them right up. For the chalkboard I used hardboard. You can see more on how I make them in this post. Some people just paint right over the mirror, but because I sell these, I would hate for people to not know to be careful with it. Plus as I said up front, the original mirror was super heavy.
This whole set up would be perfect in an entry hall (if you have one as I sadly do not), with a little dish waiting to collect your keys…
I used pure white for this, but it did require a couple coats of shellac first. It seems the good ones are always bleeders! I sanded and sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear wax.
I just dropped this off at my booth yesterday. It’s hard to say good bye sometimes.
Hope you enjoyed today’s thrifty makeover. I’ll be back tomorrow sharing what I did with another thrift store mirror!
Is it still a mirror? You’ll have to come back tomorrow and see!
UPDATE: No you don’t! See it HERE now! 🙂

Very Nice Christy… I am green of envy of your thrift finds¡¡, in Spain those jewels are so expensive¡¡ imposible to do nothing…. I want to move there hahaha… I am planning a trip with my family to Usa, I ‘am sure that I wil spend one day thrifting here and there…so I’ll buy one big suitcase just for it…. Looking forward to see your new makeover tomorrow…I visualize this mirror as an sign with an oval graphic and hooks …should be ..why not?, see you tomorow darling XOXO

I think it’s hilarious what you said about your garage! Mine is the same way. I always tell my customers they need to pick up as soon as possible once I’m done with a piece because it’s not safe for finished pieces in my garage – terrible things happen! LOL!
Christy K. James says
I so get what you’re saying! I try really hard not to take on other people’s furniture because I would be afraid for it lol! Even my own pieces, if something bad is going to happen, it’s always in the home stretch!
