Hi friends! I’m excited to be participating in a little tour with several blog friends called “Rock Your Knock Off” where we each choose a high-end item and make our own for way less! I’m sharing a monogrammed fabric wastebasket that’s just perfect for my master bath. The $89 price tag? I’ll make my own, thank you very much.
Here’s what I used to make my version:
I found this cheapie can at Kmart. It took less than half a yard of fabric to complete.
First I made a pattern by wrapping the can in paper and folding in the edges along the top, then marking where to cut along the bottom in pencil.
I cut my pattern and tested it on the can, then pinned it to the fabric and cut it out.
(I used my fabric scissors for cutting the fabric and my inexpensive ones to cut the pattern. I try to only use my good fabric scissors for fabric. :))
I added the monogram using the same technique I used on my Men’s Valet turned Pretty Stool.
Next I took the project outside to attach the fabric using spray adhesive. The directions suggested to spray both surfaces and then wait 15 seconds before attaching, for maximum adhesion.
One Mississippi, two Mississippi…15!
Then I rolled it right on.
The last step is adding the trim, which I attached using hot glue.
Perfect!
I’m really happy with how it turned out and $15 fits into most budgets. Have you priced decorative garbage cans lately? They are not cheap.
You can create a beautiful wastebasket to match any décor.
The monogram didn’t transfer as nicely since this fabric has a lot of texture, so I filled it in a bit with a paint pen.
Honestly though, I like it just as much without the monogram:
Make sure you don’t try to put it in the microwave.
Um, okay.
I love it in my master bath:
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Dee says
Wow — $89 for a trash can? I’ll take your version any day, and I wouldn’t think of putting it in a microwave either! Great job! 🙂
Christy K. James says
I know, right? $89 is crazy, although it was 20% off but that’s still insane! Wasn’t that warning label strange?? Have a great week, Dee. 🙂
Barbara Ann says
Perfect idea for my new guest bathroom. I cannot find the right trash can. This is a perfect solution. Now for the knobs and towel bar
Any ideas for a costal beachy theme?
Christy K. James says
I love that you could make it any pattern you want. As for a beachy towel hanger idea, have you seen my friend, April’s window towel holder? http://www.housebyhoff.blogspot.com/2013/06/free-roadside-window-to-bathroom-towel.html It’s really pretty and beachy! Have a great week. 🙂
carol says
Lovely creation. One thing does puzzle me though, and it may be because I live in the UK, but why would you want to put the bin in the microwave? 🙂
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Carol! I have no idea why one would want to put this in the microwave, but that’s what the warning label suggested. Very strange. XO
carol says
OOPS!! Sorry, didn’t see the microwave warning issued by the manufacturer on the base of the bin 🙂
Christy K. James says
Oops, I just answered your last comment, lol. Strange, right? Have a great day!
Julie at Being Home says
Woo-Hoo! I really like this and yours is better than the original! Christy, this turned out fabulous and classy. Maybe I am cheap, but there is no way I am paying $89 for a garbage can! Hey, at least yours come with an awesome warning label underneath. LOL!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha, yes…thank you for the warning, Kmart! I’m with you, this was on sale for 20% off and that is still insane, then shipping on top of that. I’m cheap too!
Cindy Eikenberg says
Kristy….LOVE this and it looks even better than the original! I’d say you definitely rocked the knock off! I’m giggling over the don’t put it in the microwave. 🙂 Pinning! Have an awesome day!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Cindy! Yes, I thought that warning was a bit odd LOL! Have a great day, too! 🙂

Love your wastebasket knock-off! The pattern is a very important step. If you’ve ever covered a lampshade you know! Oh and taking it outside to spray the adhesive…can be a sticky mess! Another great project, Christy! Thanks. I have the printed burlap just need the plastic waste can!
Christy K. James says
The pattern is very important, June! You are so right. This was a pretty simple project and in fact, the hardest part believe it or not, was finding the perfect trash can. Have a great week. 🙂

Andi says
Wait. What? $89 for a garbage can? And people PAY that? My mother-in-law would say they have toys in their head. Yours is beautiful. And genius. Big shocker.
I’m still reeling from the $89. I had to go to their website and see for myself. There must be real gold or diamonds in that thing is all I can figure. I’m going to go put my head in the microwave now.
xoxo

Kelly @ View Along the Way says
$89 for a trash can is craziness! Yours looks incredible, so impressed!
Christy K. James says
I know, right? Have they actually sold any at that price? Do you have any idea how many velvet Minnie Mouse dresses you can buy with $89? You could line your whole closet. 🙂
Kelly @ View Along the Way says
And if I had a free $89 to spend, that’s EXACTLY what I’d do with it. 🙂
Jeanne says
