I’ve got a room makeover to share today! My boys’ bathroom was renovated and then decorated in a mad rush before my sister and her family came to visit a few years ago. I’ve never been happy with it, so I decided to work on it. When I moved in, I painted the walls with an oops paint I used in my last house, hung a new curtain and threw some pictures up on the walls. Here’s what it looked like:
Pretty fabulous huh? We even had fancy clear plastic towel bars and a matching toilet paper holder. Here it is now:
We replaced the tile floor, toilet, vanity, mirror, and light fixture.
That’s my hubby doing what I tell him to hard at work. Ew gross.
I added the lighter stripes to brighten it up a bit. The color was just too dark by itself. I think it’s fun. That’s what I love about bathrooms… you can be a little adventurous! They are the perfect backdrop for my little gallery wall…
I redid all of the pieces here except the frame on the top, right. Most were thrift store finds, which you can see here. I made the “Beach” sign from an old picket fence. The sand dollar art I made last-minute today from one of the pictures I had in this space before. You can see what it looked like before in the first “before” picture of the bathroom.
Now this space is personalized just for my sweet boys. These photos were from a recent day at the beach.
Here is the other side before:
Very fancy! It was a coastal themed bathroom even then, if you count the nightlight. 🙂 And now:
Like my little crab friend? I picked him up at a craft show a couple of years ago…
He makes a great night-light. This lantern came from Pier One about fifteen years ago. Now I use it to house wash cloths:
The curtain is a set of two curtain panels I found on clearance at Target a few years ago. They match perfectly in here.
This set of three subliminal messages was made from old thrift store frames also, and fence pickets too! You can see how I made them here.
This chalkboard shelf was a Get Your DIY On project for our chalkboard-themed party last Fall. It cost me $1 at a yard sale…
I also found this step stool at a yard sale for just a dollar:
I bought very few accessories for this makeover. I used thrift store and yard sale finds to add personality to this space for very little money. The frame gallery wall is my favorite, probably because it’s full of pictures of my babies 🙂
Here’s one more Before:
Ahh so much better after:
Part of what pushed me to work on this room was our Get Your DIY On theme for August: Room Revamps!
Here’s are the spaces my lovely co-hosts revamped:
The fun starts this Sunday, August 3rd at 7:00pm EST. Come link up any space you’ve revamped or just come by to get inspired!
I can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the party!
I hope you liked my little makeover. My boys really love it, so if they’re happy, so am I! 🙂

What a difference Christy! I like how you laid the tiles on a diagonal. Really like your vanity – not your typical one! Lov’n the stripes on the walls too and of course your awesome beach themed gallery wall. I just might have to steal your lantern hand towel storage – such a great idea!

You did a wonderful job!! I love every bit of it!! I’m sure your boys will love keeping this clean-ha, boys,!!! Nothing like a clean fresh bath room!!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sandra! The mere thought of using “clean” and “boys” in the same sentence is a funny one ha ha. My boys are so messy…probably because I always pick up after them! Maybe you’re right and this new space will encourage them to be a bit neater…we shall see 🙂

I have the same vanity! And we have a gray beach theme. I love the pull out, I turned mine into a clothes hamper. Interesting to see your take using the same vanity. Great job!
Christy K. James says
What a great idea to use the drawer as a hamper! I never thought of that! 🙂

I love that bathroom, what a great job you did on that, your boys will be proud to (mess) it up. lol I had to pin the shelf and the sand dollar art among other things, love that vanity and all of it. Love stripes on wall. You gave me idea about another use for couple of lanterns I have. You’re good girl.
You might be very surprised some day Christy. I tried to raise my boys 2 – 16 months apart) to keep a bathroom clean, they had to take turns cleaning guest bath (with their older sister) when they were kids. They did pretty good job for two young boys, but when they grew up, moved to their own places (before marriage/girlfriends) I was very proud of how clean they kept their places. Their girl friends thanked me for making them learn. Then their wives thanked me. They knew how to do laundry, correctly, cook, even iron. My oldest son’s wife thought those just girls jobs. She had surgery and Mike was keeping house up while working 10-14 hrs. a day, doing laundry, cooking. She was complaining about her boys and I asked her why they couldn’t learn simple things like putting their toys away, help to clear the table. She said those are girls jobs and I asked her how she thought Mike knew how to clean, etc. as he was doing.
I had 2 of each but they all had to share the load. I wanted my kids to be able to go out in world knowing how to take care of themselves, not have to live like pigs. They’d better not ever live like that. Oldest son is divorced now but keeps his condo sparkling clean. His girl friend always tells me now nice it is that he doesn’t seem to think she should do all the work. He does all he can to help out even when he’s working alot. He’s 51 1/2 now. Not sure how youngest son (50) is, he’s been married for 25 yrs. Take heart Mom, they do get over being stinky boys. but if they’ve been raised in clean home they want to keep living like that, at least we hope so,lol. Happy summer days what’s left of them.
Christy K. James says
Good advice! I try to make my boys help keep things clean too. I figure their wives will thank me one day! Enjoy the rest of your summer too XO
