Hey Friends! It’s Themed Furniture Thursday and today I’m sharing the makeover of this dressing table:
I found it at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been riding around with it in the back of my car because my garage is SO full, y’all! I really need to get out there and straighten it up. Why does being creative have to be so messy?
When I was deciding on what piece of furniture to use for this month’s theme, this had to be the one!
This month’s theme is “black”. You know that’s a tough one for me because most everything I paint is the total opposite of black!
Here is what I came up with:
See that little bit of black on the top?
Does that qualify for this month’s “black” theme?
No? How about this:
Better?
And finally…this!
I think it works, don’t you?
I used my orbital sander on this one so it ended up more distressed than I usually like, but I think I love how it looks on this piece.
The tray and candlesticks came from Pier one. The little Frenchy metal bucket came from Michaels.
I created this damask motif with my silhouette cameo…
It adds a pretty detail to the top. I made a stencil out of contact paper, then spray painted the motif on.
I got the silhouette for Christmas. It has made me lazy though because now I don’t want to transfer and paint in my graphics the old school way! No silhouette? No problem! You can purchase a beautiful damask stencil HERE. (No affiliation, just beautiful stencils!)
The stripes were created using Frog Tape:
I also did this on another dressing table I painted a couple of years ago. You can see that one here.
The mirror was missing when I purchased this dressing table:
So I decided a chalk board would be a fun replacement:
I made it out of this framed print I found in my frame stash…au revoir Paris Fashion!
It was the perfect color and size woohoo! It is also very lightweight, so I was able to attach the finished chalkboard by using E6000 glue and letting it sit overnight.
It says “You are beautiful!”
The hardware came off of a drawer that I found curbside. You might remember I used that drawer to make this holder for my kids’ backpacks.
The petite glass knobs from the faux drawer in the middle came from Hobby Lobby…
The drawers and the center are lined with fabric that I originally bought over a year ago to make a cushion for a table that I wanted to turn into a bench for the foot of my bed. BOYTHATWASAMOUTHFUL. 🙂
I adhered it to the bottom with matte Mod Podge. I just brushed it on the bottom like glue.
I think this totally works for our “black” theme!
See how my talented furniture flippin buddies interpreted this month’s theme here:
I’ve been working on my sectional slipcover tutorial and hope to share that soon! 🙂
UPDATE: See how I slip-covered my sectional HERE now!
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Ah ya, it totally works for the Black Makeover Theme! See that gorgeous damask motif on the top of your desk reminded me of how much I hope Santa brings me a Silhouette Machine for Christmas (are you listening Santa). Love the striped detail on the sides! Replacing the mirror with a chalkboard is very clever too – love this idea. As always, you rocked this challenge Christy!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie!! Yes, you need one! I don’t use mine as much as I could I’m sure, but it does make things easier. Plus I’m learning how to use it a little more each time. 🙂

A spectacular success, once again. I love the black stencil. Since you used the Silhouette machine to create it that means I can’t find this out there in the real world, right? I probably just answered my own question. LOL
Always look forward to your new posts.
🙂 Rita
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Rita! And guess what I found? Damask stencils! I found these from Artistic Stencils whom I have ordered from before and was very pleased: http://www.artisticstencildesigns.com/category_3/Damask-Stencils.htm So there you go, no silhouette needed! 🙂

Becky says
This post is really making me smile! Why DOES being creative automatically mean a full garage… and all other storage spaces?!? My husband and I regularly tell each other “NO MORE HOBBIES!”
I love your idea of black, haha! At first I was only seeing the chippiness, but then you pointed out all the little touches. Looks black to me. : ) Really, this turned out SO beautiful! I guess sometimes you have to twist the rules to fit what you just gotta do, right? : )
Christy K. James says
Ha ha…guess what I did all afternoon? I cleaned my garage! I think I shamed myself into getting it done. I give it a week tops lol! XOXO

Ruth Anne says
Love how your dressing table turned out! That is an ingenius solution to the missing mirror–great place to write those reminder notes to one’s self at night and then see them first thing in the morning!
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Ruth Anne! I love the idea to write reminders there…never thought of that. 🙂

MaryJean says
I know I can always find what I’m looking for on your blog . . . I found the perfect French label that would fit in the oval section on a the table I was working on, but that was as far as i got. Your link to how to transfer an image was exactly what I needed. One question, I want to use wax to seal it, do you wax the transfer or seal the transfer first and then wax the whole piece? I don’t know if the image will bleed if I wax it without sealing. Will it make a difference if I use black marker to fill in the image or paint? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a handle on how to do this. Can you tell it my first time? 😉 Thanks Kristy!
Christy K. James says
Hi Maryjean! I usually lightly sand the graphic after I’ve painted it in (I wait a few hours before sanding) and then wax the whole thing. I use folkart acrylic craft paint and a liner brush to paint in my graphic. It’s harder to get the tiny details perfect using a marker, but I’ve seen people have success if their aren’t a lot of very fine details. 🙂
MaryJean says
Thanks Christy! this was very helpful!
