Hey y’all! If you missed my big announcement on Tuesday, you can read more about it HERE. In a nutshell, I’m out shopping the World’s Longest Yard Sale right now in search of great finds to help furnish a Habitat for Humanity home to surprise the new homeowners! I’m probably somewhere in Ohio right now. 🙂 Thanks to GMC for the invite to participate in this amazing adventure!!
The show must go on around here though and I’ve got a pretty cool update to show you today. This month’s Get Your DIY On theme is storage, and I came across this $20 bookcase at the thrift store this past Friday, and thought it would be perfect for this theme! I know, I cheated on my thrift store diet. Again. Honestly I was there for Brennan, I swear. We were on the hunt for something specific he was in search of. I blame him.
But I couldn’t pass up this cutie:
Who can’t find a use for a cute little bookcase? Well obviously the person who donated it.
I hauled out several pieces of the cheap fence pickets from my curbside wood pile score to help with this makeover:
Much better!
Not too long ago I shared a smaller bookcase (see it HERE) with old pickets added to the back vertically. Those were just white-washed. That bookcase sold almost right away, so I decided to go for a similar treatment, but chose to add a little more color this time.
Loving the added color, even though much of it will be hidden.
I removed the original backing to make painting easier, and it just looked so plain when I was finished painting:
Adding the wood to the back just adds so much character to this piece, and it cost me nothing since I curb-shopped the fence pickets!
After cutting the pickets to size using my miter saw, I added the color the same way I white-wash. You can see the simple process HERE. Basically I just painted each picket and immediately wiped the paint off with a rag.
The gray turned out a bit darker than I liked, so I dry brushed a little white on those ones. That was just an oops paint I picked up a while back.
Adding these to the back was as simple as nailing them in place along the outer edge.
The back looks almost as pretty!
Before and after…
The second shelf is adjustable. I see I didn’t put it back in the same spot…oopsie.
This would be so great in a kid’s room or in a dorm maybe?
Perfect for storing and organizing so many things!
My Get Your DIY On girls were busy with storage projects of their own for this month’s challenge:
Charging Station from The Hankful House
Craft Storage from Vintage Containers from House by Hoff
Jewelry Storage from Artsy Chicks Rule
Ikea Tarva Hack from The Happy Housie
Bloggers: Be sure to come back to link up your DIY Storage ideas this Sunday at 7:00 pm EST. The party stays open for ten days, then we’ll share our favorites!
Then I’ll be back on Tuesday with my Trash-to-Treasure girls sharing what I did with this mamma jamma:
I may have also picked this up on that same trip Friday, but that’s it. Promise. 😀
UPDATE: See how it turned out HERE now! 🙂
I’ll also be sharing the details of my yard sale adventure sometime soon too! You can see some of what I’ve been up to so far on Instagram.

Anyway, this is fabulous! LOVE the colors.
I was thinking towels, washcloths, soaps, TP in a basket, etc, for the bathroom (since I don’t have much storage in mine). Possibilities are endless!
Beautiful!

Annie (Canada) says
Hi Christy, I usually bypass these types of bookcases as they don’t have the style I look for. Now that I’ve seen how you’ve re-styled this one I’m inspired to do the same 🙂 Great job! BTW what does GMC stand for? I don’t mean to sound ignorant but I live in Canada and whenever I google GMC it comes up with the car manufacturer!?
Annie (Canada) says
Now I just feel silly!! I just started to follow you on Instagram and noticed the trailer and GMC is the car manufacturer. I was thinking it was an acronym for something from your home state. Please forgive my ignorance.
Christy says
Ha ha…that’s ok! You’re not the only one who has asked that actually! 🙂
Angelia says
This is simply beautiful. Hope you have a super fun time on your shopping trip! I can’t wait to see everything you’re able to find. Are you able to sneak in some buys for yourself?
Christy says
Thanks so much, Angelia! Our trip was exhausting but a blast at the same time! I saw a ton of things I would have bought had I been able to get it home! XO

Christy says

Renee Aitken says
it looks great, but not a fan of white faux distressed furniture. with the colors of the background boards i would have went with a softer grayish blue tint to the white paint…that just me though…white furniture is too boring.
Christy says
Thanks for your honest feedback, Renee! XO
Becky says
Oh WOW, I LOVE this!!! The extra color is so perfect! Now I’m eyeing the book shelf here in my living room, haha!
My refinishing buddy son just looked at this blog page, sighed loudly and said “Her stuff is SO perfect!” Yep. No disagreements here… : )
