Today I’m sharing a super easy way to upcycle an old cabinet door. This project is easy and cheap! And what’s better than cheap and easy? I mean, when you’re talking DIY, of course. 🙂
A few weeks ago, my mom and I came upon a yard sale where the homeowner was selling a pantry cabinet for $10. It had been part of his built-in kitchen cabinets so it was configured a bit weird on one side.
We really wanted the doors, but not the cabinet. So we sweet talked the guy into taking the doors off and selling them to us he he he. We still paid $10, but for four doors, it was still a bargain.
Here’s what I started with:
And here is my cheap and easy upgrade:
I’m using this to hang jewelry, but you could use it for coats, towels, keys, and so much more!
To make this I gathered my supplies:
- Cabinet door (painted, I used my DIY chalk paint)
- Hanging hooks (I ended up adding a glass knob to the mix for a little bling)
- Pretty scrapbook paper
- Mod Podge
- A well used, but favorite brush or foam brush
- Hanging brackets (not pictured)
I cut the scrapbook paper to fit the inside panel of the cabinet door.
Next, I applied a coat of Mod Podge to the inside panel. Then, working quickly, I applied the Mod Podge to the back of each piece of paper and attached them to the panel, smoothing out the air bubbles with a straight edge as I went.
I applied two more coats of Mod Podge, waiting fifteen minutes between each coat.
I gave the rest of the coat a light sanding and a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear wax. Here you can see where the knob hole was. I think it adds a bit of character…
The fun part was adding the hooks and a glass knob. Add some sawtooth hanging brackets on the back and you’re good to go!
I did this little project in just a couple of hours. Cheap, easy, and quick! 🙂
This was supposed to be for the Christmas Market, but I really like it!
As always, thanks for visiting, and your kind words are appreciated more than you’ll ever know!

I love this project! Gosh even I could do this! Now I’m going to look for doors!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Gillian! This would be great even in a bathroom or in the entry way to catch coats and bags. You can proabably find doors at the Habitat Restore if you have one in your area. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, they make my day! 🙂
Gillian says
I’m in Australia, so don’t have a Habitat store, but there are similar stores, and even demolition yards, which will have old ones, I may even find some nice hooks 🙂

Or Maybe you’ll get lucky and come across someone getting rid of old cabinets! I lived in Exmouth on the northwest cape as a child. My dad was born and raised in Sydney:)

I got 2 FREE cabinet doors from a friend of mine…but they have an arch at the top so I can’t turn them sideways. But I’m thinking signage for the basement bar area…
I’m LOVING the paper and knobs!!!

We are currently having our kitchen cabinets refaced. I knew I wanted to repurpose the drawers and doors, so
I confiscated doors, drawers, and hardware before the cabinet guy arrived. My plan was to use the drawers within the cabinets for pull-out organization, and the doors would become trays. I thought I would dress up the drawer fronts with scrapbook paper.
Tonight, I came across your site. It was fate! I can coordinate scrapbook papers on all three projects: drawers, trays, and knob-and-hook organizer! Perfect!
Thanks for sharing your project and providing inspiration!
(PS Your sectional makeover is AMAZING!!!)
