Hi Friends and welcome to day#22 of my March Madness, 31 Makeovers in 31 Days Series!! Today’s makeover is a sweet one and one that was fun to do since it was for someone special. One of my best friends in the whole world was on the lookout for a night table for her sweet daughter, Charlotte’s room. Well actually she asked me to be on the look out and so I have been.
Who would have thought it would be so hard to find a simple night table fit for a pretty girl’s room?
I finally spied this one at the Salvation Army:
It had those French Provincial lines that I just love. And it turns out that the dresser in her room does too! How perfect! Now you rarely see a furniture makeover from me that doesn’t include chalk paint, but this is one of them. I’ve included affiliate links so you can see some of the products I used.
Here is her new look:
To make it match the dresser it needed to be smooth with no distressing, so I actually used spray paint.
It gives it such a pretty smooth finish.
I sanded lightly first with 150 grit, then 220 grit on top and 220 grit sandpaper all over the rest. Before I sanded the drawers, I filled in the old hardware holes with Elmer’s Wood Filler. After that was dry, I vacuumed all the surfaces with my shop vac, and wiped them clean with a clean soft cloth.
I primed first with a coat of Bullseye 123 Spray Primer . Then I gave it two coats of Rustoleum All Surface White Satin Spray Paint for a smooth finish. For some reason, spray paint leaves almost a dusty film on the surface. After the primer and each coat of paint was dry, I wiped the surfaces down with a clean soft cloth before adding the next coat.
That was it. It would be so easy to paint all furniture this way, except spray paint and primer can really add to the bottom line. Plus I love the look and feel of chalk painted pieces. This is perfect for a child’s room though.
I couldn’t resist adding a fun punch of color to the drawers:
This is what I bought this Krylon Aqua for that I used on these cannisters I shared on Saturday. It matches the wall color in her room. I taped off the front with Frogtape and brown craft paper and then primed and spray painted the drawers inside and out.
Then I wrapped the paper around the drawer and primed and spray painted the front. These pretty glass knobs from Home Depot were perfect for this little piece since the hardware on the dresser was satin nickel:
I love the little surprise when you open the drawers.
Amost as sweet as Charlotte herself, and she loved it! 🙂
Tomorrow I’ll be back sharing the makeover of this lamp my Mom almost put out for her yard sale!

Hi Christy, what a sweet makeover!! I also prefer look&ageless of chalk paint but for this purpose is perfect …I never achieve to hide the holes in the wood as you do … Is fantastic the way you work it.
Kisses!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Victoria! I agree this is great for a child’s room, but I too love the chalk painted look for me. Sometimes with the holes, the first time filling isn’t perfect, so I fill a bit more and sand again. Have a great day, my friend!! XOXO

Again, here I am and loving your furniture piece for Charlotte. It made sense to use spray paint on the piece. And it’s gorgeous! And again, I am so eager to see the lamp that your mom ‘almost’ put out at a yard sale. I think it’s really cool looking and know that what you do to it will be even cooler! Thanks for brightening my morning.
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Joanne! I love reading your sweet comments! That lamp looks much better now. 🙂
Mary Kaiser says
Love the night stand. Was one can of primer and one can of paint enough to cover it, or did it take more?
Good job!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mary! Good question…I used one can of primer and two cans of spray paint. XO

You are a spray paint goddess! I’ve never seen a finish look so good from a spray can. Amazing!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha thanks, Anne! I’d love to take all the credit, but that spray paint I used is awesome! It has a nozzle that sprays a larger area so it worked great on this piece! 🙂

Ugh, I just love it! I joined your blog somewhat recently and you have me hooked. My 10-year old and I were drooling over your do-overs (And every time I look at the before and think, “Now how is that going to look good afterwards?!” ) I think our summer is going to be spent in the flea markets, thanks to you! 🙂 Keep them coming– They are so much fun!

Rose L. says
It is so much nicer painted. I am noticing that furniture looks so much lighter in weight when painted.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Rose! I think it really does. Wood can be gorgeous, but can feel heavy sometimes too.
