Hello Lovely Friends! I have something really fun to share today. My blogging buddy, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule and I are taking you thrifting with us!! We’re calling it a Thrift Shop Shakedown. We met up to go thrifting in search of something for each of us to make over, and captured our trip on video. We’re sharing that video today as well the items we found and what we did with them!
First, let’s go thrifting!
{If you have trouble viewing, see it HERE.}
Wasn’t that fun?? It’s hard to capture a lot in three minutes, but thrifting is always an adventure!
This was actually our second thrift store trip that we shared on video. If you missed the first one, you can see it HERE.
Here’s the rocker I found on that trip:
It was really sturdy and in great shape, but it just lacked character. For $6.98, I knew I could make this a cute piece, and I think I did.
Here’s how it turned out:
Better, yes?
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can see the products I used.
I think this would be sweet in a boy’s room or a girl’s room. I love pink and gray together too.
I painted this in Sparrow by Behr made into DIY chalk paint. Then I taped off stripes using FrogTape and painted them in Ultra Pure White. I removed the tape immediately after my second coat.
FrogTape is my favorite for getting those clean crisp lines.
I used my Silhouette Cameo to create this sweet owl stencil out of contact paper:
I used chalk paint to paint it in…
If a Silhouette Cameo is on your Christmas wish list, this is the one I have HERE. It makes adding images/graphics to projects so much easier! This owl is from the silhouette library.
I finished this sweet rocker off with a light sanding and a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear wax. See my complete chalk painting tutorial HERE.
This little baby blanket was a $3 thrift store find and appears to be hand-knit:
Can you see what the raised images are? They are little rocking horses…
So sweet! I just had to bring this home.
This crate came from TJ Maxx. Perfect for holding a few books.
Hope you enjoyed this sweet makeover and coming thrifting with us!
Now you have to go see what Nancy did with her jewelry box she found:

Loved this! How great was that Thrift Store! I could watch you two shop all day! Just give us ideas on what to do with all the stuff on those shelves. ???? I’m headed to the thrift stores now. The rocking chair was the cutest!
Christy says
Thanks, Angelia! We have some good thrift stores around here for sure, but they are getting more and more pricey! Hope you found some great things today! 🙂
Paula@SweetPea says
You gave this rocker a much needed update and now it’s just adorable. I love the striped seat and cute owl. Isn’t it sad that someone gave up that hand-knit blanket to the thrift shop? I’m glad that you rescued it.
Christy says
Thanks, Paula! I just love redoing children’s pieces. And yes…a lot of work went into that blanket for it to end up at the thrift store. It didn’t have a tag on it and I was afraid they wouldn’t sell it to me, but they did. I just love it! XO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
This is so cute Christy!!! So much better!! 😉 And the back of that rocker was just begging for something like this. Isn’t the Silhouette awesome!! I love it and use it all the time now! Can’t wait for our next adventure!
xoxo
Nancy
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy!! I love finding kids’ pieces…they are so fun to redo, and the silhouette adds so many options! We need to plan our next trip!! XOXO
Robin says
You have a great thrift store! We don’t have stores that great in NJ!
Christy says
We are really lucky, Robin! We visited a couple for this video and they are the ones that drop off bags, then have trucks that come to your house and pick up regularly, so they get a lot of good donations!
Jenna says
So adorable Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Jenna!! XO
Annie (Canada) says
So very cute, I love it!
Christy says

Love how you transformed the little rocker. You discovered some treasures. I liked the little framed chairs in the video.
Christy says
Thanks, Rose! Weren’t those little framed chairs cute? When I watched that video clip back, I wondered why on earth I didn’t grab them! XO
Marie, The Interior Frugalista says
Awe, such a cute makeover, Christy! A silhouette machine IS on my Christmas List AGAIN this year. Showing Santa your link and making HIM look twice because this girl’s not been naughty (okay a little) and has been very nice.
????????
Christy says
Thanks, Marie! And ha ha…you get you that silhouette this year, girl! 😉
Tania says
How fun, I love these videos!! That chair turned out just adorable!
Tania
Christy says
Thanks, Tania! We had fun making them! 🙂
AFS says
I’m surprised you didn’t make your own crate from your fence boards.
Christy says
Oh duh! I really could have, but do you know that thought never even crossed my mind?? I saw this and thought it was cute so I bought it lol. 🙂
Sherry Stuifbergen says
I loved the thrift store tour. I searched the shelves with you! MY kind of fun! Thank you!
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Sherry! Did you see anything you liked? Lol…thrifting is one of my very favorite things to do! XO

That was so much fun to go to the thrift store with you and Nancy!! I felt like I was there with you both. How fun you live close enough to each other where you can do that!
I am in love with that rocker and I love the Owl stencil. So cute, and I am looking forward to catching up on one of my favorite blogs. Entering the land of the living again!
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Karen and yes we only live about 40 minutes away from each other so that is really fun! I’ve missed your makeovers but I understand life gets in the way sometimes…glad to see you out and about again! XOXO
Aj Morgan says
Love the rocker!!! I have two childrens rockers from my mother-in law’s childhood and use them as display pieces. One day I’m sure my Grandchildren will enjoy them.
I do have a question for you. Every time I use stencils I end up with really bad fuzzy lines (meaning the lines don’t come out straight with the stencil for some reason). I have tried several paint application methods and several different techniques for applying the paint with no luck on any of them. Suggestions? Thanks!
Christy says
Thanks, Aj! When I use stencils, I spray Loctite spray adhesive on the back of the stencil to hold it in place while I paint. Then I use a small flat brush and brush the paint on, moving my brush away from the outer edges as best as I can. Those two things really help, but I do go back with a small thin liner brush and touch up any imperfections when I’m done as well. Hope this helps! XO
Aj Morgan says
Thanks I have never tried moving away from the edge with a flat brush, so I will give that a try!!!! Thanks again!!
Christy says
Yes good luck! 🙂
Sandra@lookingforpotential says

Becky says
SO cute!!!!! Maybe a little rocking chair is waiting out there for me today? : ) I love the stripes on yours, it looks so fresh and bright!
Christy says
Thanks again…I see you’re getting caught up. 🙂 Hope you found wonderful treasures today!
Becky says
Haha! Yep! SOMEONE dumped a cup of water (???) into my laptop’s keyboard, effectively cutting me off from all electronic life until a spare keyboard could be cobbled together. : ) Getting caught up is right! My inbox is buried!
I found some really great books, if not any decor items. Oh well, it makes for a happier husband. : )
Christy says
OH NO!! Sorry to hear that!
