Hello Friends! Today I’m sharing a great upcycle from two items I found recently.
First I found this simple shelf at a thrift store:
I loved the chunkiness of it and figured for $6 I’d be able to do something with it.
Then not long after that, I found this mirror:
For ONE WHOLE DOLLAR at a yard sale. Yes, I’ll have that, thank you!
When I was playing around in my workshop/studio…okay the garage…I spotted these two getting cozy in a corner and had an idea to marry the two.
And this was created:
The waves in the mirror frame seemed very dated before, but after painting, I find them to be very charming.
The Eagle ornament at the top also dated this piece, but I swapped it out for an old lamp finial.
Much better! I’m always glad I save those parts! (I saved the eagle too…just in case.)
This is in my bedroom, which I don’t share too often. I thought it would be pretty against the soft blue in here.
I used DIY chalk paint (no sanding or priming required) in pure white with a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax.
I connected the two using these angled brackets I already had. I would have used straight brackets if I didn’t already have these on hand:
I was sitting on the bottom step of my staircase to take that picture and who always shows up the minute I sit down?
My sweet Kitty, Holly. Hard to believe I’ve had her for almost 19 years! And isn’t she sitting on the prettiest hardwood floors you ever did see? I’ll be sharing a post about them next week. If nothing else, it will be fun to see my house in TOTAL CHAOS during the install!
This little duo is perfect for this month’s Get Your DIY On theme:
Here’s what my co-hosts came up with:

Light & White Writing Nook by Mandy at The Hankful House

The party fun starts this Sunday, July 5th, at 7:00pm EST.
Bloggers, come share your white and light projects, so we can inspire our readers!
I love how two ho-hum dated pieces came together to create this quaint little shelf and mirror combo! And for only $7!
I’ll be keeping my eyes out see what else I can put together now. 🙂
Are you doing anything exciting this holiday weekend? We are heading away from our beach to another up the coast about two hours. Hopefully the forcasted rain will move through early! I hope all you friends in the U.S. have a safe and FUN 4th of July weekend!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Lovely mirror and what a great make-over. Both the mirror and shelf go so well together.
I like the way you used the ‘L’ brackets in connecting the mirror to the shelf. Clever idea.

You were so smart to combine the two of these into one piece. I’m glad that you showed us the back so that I could see how you combined these.

That is very original and very beautiful! I too and a sucker for a repurpose, and I always want to save old things. Way to go! Keep the landfills empty!

Only you could marry those two pieces together so beautifully – they look like they were always a pair! What an adorable kitty – she looks more like a little kitten than a 19 year old. My feline child Rexy always photo bombs my shots too.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie!! Holly thinks thd minute I sit down, I’m all hers…I’ll miss that one day! Hope you had a great holiday weekend!!

Lanette Adams says
I’m sure this question has been asked over and over but where do you purchase Annie Sloan wax and chalk paint?
Christy K. James says
Hi Lanette,
You can search for a retailer (they call them stockists) near you here: http://www.anniesloan.com/stockists#/ If there isn’t a retailer near you, you can order from most of them online. Hope this helps!

As expected, great job! Really the two pieces must have been separated at birth. The pairing is just perfect. And that sweet kitty! 19 years old? Wow! ~Julie

Kim says
What did you put on the back of the mirror to finish it off? I often have to cover the backs of frames and have used burlap before but would like to use something else. Thanks!!
Love the kitty! She’s precious. I would love to have a kitty but we are all allergic.
Christy K. James says
Hi Kim! I used to use brown craft paper, but one day I found a roll of brown craft paper with black polka dots on it at TJ Maxx. It was supposed to be wrapping paper, but was still a bit thick like craft paper, and much cuter for covering the backs of things. I recently found a really pretty roll at Hobby Lobby with a black damask print on it! My kitty is a sweetie. 🙂
