Hello there amazing friends!! I have a brand spankin new makeover to share with y’all today! I figured my house would be about 75% packed up and a total wreck by the time my post with my Furniture Fixer Upper Friends was due to share, so I planned ahead! (Be sure to look for my friends’ projects at the bottom. 🙂 )
I found this dresser on the same trip where I found this white washed sofa table I shared a couple of weeks ago.
Jack was on the hunt for a piece to paint at the thrift store. We walked around the first time and didn’t really see anything that jumped out at us, but then we found out that all the furniture was 50% off. Funny how when you find out that things are half price, they suddenly look a whole lot better!
I spied this petite curvy black dresser:
It was stacked sideways against the back of a huge hutch so I didn’t notice it at first. It was originally marked $74.99, but was marked down to $49.99. Then at half off it was only $25, but wait…I had a $5 off coupon! So I scored this baby for $20! It was looking really good at that point!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
It did have a few scrapes and bumps to contend with before painting, which was easily fixed with a little wood filler:
And I had to paint it without taking the drawers out since they were all screwed in place. Even after unscrewing any visible screw heads on one of the drawers, I still couldn’t figure out how to remove it, so I had to make do, but it wasn’t too bad.
I opted for a simple white makeover:
I sure will miss these doors in my dining room. They make such a great backdrop for my furniture pieces!
It’s been a while since I just painted a furniture piece all white and called it a day, but with these pretty curves, I didn’t think this dresser needed anything more.
Except some pretty glass knobs, of course:
These knobs came from Tj Maxx/HomeGoods. If you haven’t looked there for knobs before, they are a great resource, and they are super cheap!
This would be perfect in a nursery to hold the changing table pad, or in a girl’s room with its petite size.
This is Behr’s Ultra Pure White made into chalk paint. (Chalk paint recipe and video HERE.)
A light sanding along the edges and a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax finished it off on the outside. See my tutorial for chalk painting furniture HERE.
And for the inside…black toile:
I found a couple of yards of this fabric at the same thrift store on another trip. And yes I did put that bottom drawer fabric on upside down. Oopsie. 😉
The fabric was added using Mod Podge in a matte finish and a chip brush. I just brushed it on like a glue and used my rotary cutter and straight edge/cutting mat to cut the fabric.
It looks so much more girly and dainty than it did when it was black, don’t you think?
My talented furniture paintin friends are sharing furniture transformations today too! Visit the links below the image to see the afters!
If you want even more furniture transformation inspiration, see all my past Furniture Fixer Upper makeovers HERE.
I better get back to it! Praying for a smooth closing tomorrow!
Then I’ll be busy busy busy…here’s what’s first on the agenda:
Paint party!! 🙂
Hopefully next time I check in I’ll have house pictures!! Have a great weekend, Friends!!
UPDATE: You can check out photos of our new house HERE!!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Mary Kaiser says
Wow, LOVE the dresser, it is beautiful now in white and with the glass knobs it is my favorite. That looks like a cart full of work, but fun work because of the transformation power of paint. Good luck at your closing and have fun with your painting party.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Glass knobs make everything prettier, don’t they? Yes a cart full of work, but I am so excited to get started. Not sure how I’ll be feeling two gallons in, but we’ll see ha ha! XOXO
Shirley says
Christy You were right that dresser needed only white chalk paint. Love the paper.
TJ Max is called TK Max here in England. I just love that store. Only once have I ever come out empty handed.
Good luck with your move.
Christy says
Thank you, Shirley! I rarely come out empty-handed myself. I find whole cartloads of things I never even knew I needed ha ha! XOXO
ColleenB.~ Tx. says
Loving the all white look. I see it holding my table linens, cloth napkins, etc but you’re right; would be perfect in nursery or young girls room. Heck, I wouldn’t mind having it my spare bedroom
Christy says
Thanks, Colleen! Oh yes, I could definitely see this as a sideboard! XOXO
Christina in FL says
Good morning Christy,
Fun makeover of the chest of dresser. 🙂
Looks like a Behr paint party indeed!! 🙂 I have a feeling your new home is just as happy to have you as you are to have it!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! The paint party is on for sure, and I think you are right…this home had renters for the last few years, so it is ready for new owners to give it some love! XOXO
Larissa ~ Prodigal Pieces says
Ooh, la, la, Christy! It went from boring to chic. I love the new look. Plus, am so excited for you on the new move. I hope to join your ranks someday! 😀
Christy says
Thanks, Larissa! When at married my hubby we both owned homes. We sold mine since it was more market-ready and I moved into his with a plan to sell his as soon as we could get it ready. Then we just ended up staying there and making it work. Eight years later, we knew it was time to make the move! 🙂
Sherry Schillaci says
Love the simplicity of this dresser. What a score!
Can’t wait to see pictures of your new home…until then, good luck! I’ll be sharing in your family’s excitement…I even had a dream last night we moved into a new house! ????
Christy says
Thank you, Sherry! It was a great deal for sure. I can’t wait to share pictures of the new house and how funny that you had a dream about moving ha ha! Thanks for the well-wishes! 🙂 XO
Naomi S. says
Christy, I think you made the absolute right choice painting this dresser white. It shows off the understated qualities of the shape of the drawers and the turned little feet so much better than the black did. I just like the simplicity of it in the white. I could live with this piece in my house! And what a great deal you got on it!
Christy says
Thank you, Naomi! I think white was the right choice for this piece too, and yes it was a steal!! XOXO
Becky says
SO pretty! Simple things are supposed to be best, and this one seems to prove that point. : )
Praying for a smooth closing and lots of successful painting for you now! Have a lovely weekend!
Christy says
Thanks, Becky! And thank you for those prayers…they are very much appreciated! Only a few hours till closing now yay!! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Cecilia says
Painting it white really brings out the pretty shape of the dresser. Love it! I don’t think I would have noticed the fabric being upside down if you hadn’t pointed it out…ha, I never do anything like that…yeah, right. ????
Oo, hope you share your paint colors! I’ve been searching for a color for my kitchen and that swatch looks like it would work! Best wishes for closing! I know you are excited!
Christy says
Thanks, Cecilia…it was hard to see those pretty curves when it was so dark I agree. I hope the paint color I chose for the walls works out because I already bought three gallons! I did paint a piece of foam core and carry it all over the house to be sure I liked it so here’s hoping! If it works out, I’ll be sure to share! Thanks for the well-wishes, we are super excited!! XOXO
Kimberly says
Christy, you gave it just the right touch (as usual). I can’t wait to see your new digs!
Christy says
Thank you, Kimberly! I can’t wait to share! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Good looking dresser before, fabulous after. I’m always amazed at what a coat of paint will do. Speaking of which, love the paint chip in your cart. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve spent three years trying to find the perfect taupy greige. Not too green, not too brown, not too silver. I feel like Goldilocks, but I haven’t found my “just right” yet! In the meantime, everyone makes fun of the patchwork of squares painted all over the house. Now I’m looking at the darkest color on your chip – maybe that’s the one….
Good luck with all things new-house related, Christy!
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! I was surprised I missed it on the first walk around the store. I hope the paint color I chose for the walls works out since I already bought three gallons ha ha. I did test it by painting a piece of foam core and carrying it around the house, so fingers crossed. I chose the lightest one so we’ll see, but that darker one is pretty too! Thanks for the well-wishes! XOXO
Denise says
What a bargain! Beautiful makeover and love the toile drawer liners. xo
Christy says
Thanks so much, Denise! I’m a sucker for black and white toile! XO
Kerryanne says
Love this piece in white and the glass knobs were the perfect finish for her.
Good luck with the move Christy. We did it last month, so I know how much work it is…. but great when it’s over!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kerryanne! Oh yes then you definitely know. Ready to get going as soon as we get the keys today! Have a great weekend! XOXO
kandice says
this looks so fresh and dainty now! such an improvement
Christy says
Thank you, Kandice! XO
Marie says
Now this (whaaaaat – $20!!!) dresser has loads of class and yes, would be perfect in a nursery or girl’s room or pretty much any room. We’re going to miss your dining room door backdrop too – it’s become your signature! Wishing you a painless closing and happy painting.
Christy says
I know…what a steal, eh?? Someone else mentioned it would make a great dining room piece, and I never even thought about using it for any space other than a bedroom. Thinking my new office could use that for storage!! I’m going to miss those doors too for sure, and although I never liked the wood color of them (hubby’s choice), they made for a nice warm contrast for my light painted pieces. Will have to come up with a new favorite photo spot! Thanks for the well-wishes…only a few hours to go eek! XOXO
Julie Briones says
Very good choice making the dresser *just* white. So pretty! It would be nice in a small home as a TV console, too! Extra storage!
Ok… inquiring minds want to know…. what colors are you using of the Behr paint (in your cart)? (I’m trying to choose colors for My Wee Abode, too!)… AND, you thinkin’ of getting some pretty doors for your new place? I will miss the doors, too! But, looking forward to the new stuff coming your (and our!) way!
Christy says
Thank you, Julie! It never occurred to me to use it for anything other than a bedroom, but I love the idea of using it for a console! I am using the lightest color on the chip called “Campfire Ashe”. I tested it by painting a piece of foam core and carrying it around the house and I hope it works because I already bought three gallons! We will soon find out! XOXO
Lindy says
Love the white and sometimes s imply lovely is simply lovely.
I am so sad you are moving. “Why??” you may be asking. Because I covet your doors and will miss seeing them in all of your after shots. I initially followed you because of them–I figured those doors led to some great creativity and I was correct. Good luck in your new home and can’t wait to see the transformation.
Christy says
Thank you, Lindy! Aww I will definitely miss those beautiful doors as well. We have just outgrown this home, and need a little more space. The new place is already in great shape, but of course I have a ton of ideas for how to put our mark on it, so looking forward to that challenge! XOXO
Naomi S. says
Oh, I just realized I typed my comments in the wrong place! Sorry. Maybe I need to take a break!
Christy says
Ha ha no worries! 🙂
Nancy Walden says
Love it in white!
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! XO
Kathleen Rupp says
Wow, what a great makeover! What a different look from black to white. Good luck with your move. I too will miss your stained glass doors!
Christy says
Thank you, Kathleen! Wish I could take those doors with me! 🙂
Carolyn says
You’re moving?? How did I miss that info? I would move back to VA just to enjoy your back yard!!!
Are you moving to NC so you can help with mine? LOL!!
Jack is doing great!! Chip off the old block.
Christy says
Yep…movin on up! You are so sweet! I will miss my little back yard for sure as we did a ton of work out there. What you can’t see though is that we back up to a busy road and it isn’t the quietest place to relax. We are just moving about ten minutes up the road…looking forward to quiet and a pool woohoo! 🙂
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
So elegant and understated. White wins almost every time, LOL. Love the new pulls too. Good luck with everything today and this weekend, I know you will be a very busy girl – can’t wait to see pics of the new house!
Christy says
Thank you, Jen! I seriously think I would just paint everything white if I only had a booth and no blog. Yes we are busy for sure! Had to take a little break! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
LOVELY! And I like that you line the drawers!
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! It’s always fun to choose the drawer liners! XOXO
Fonda says
I took advantage of the Home Depot paint rebate, too. I only used 2 gallons for the living room, so I won’t be getting back as much as you do!!! I can’t wait for another sale or rebate. We are on a (slow) roll, so I’ll be getting another gallon or two for le foyer and hallways. We have yet to decide on which yellow to use, but we’ll figure it out!
Did Jack get anything to make over? Can’t forget him!!!
I love that you chose white for the dresser. That was a good choice. That was funny about not being able to pull the drawers out all the way. Has that happened before, or do you think it was done by a buyer? Just odd. I’m glad it worked out for you, though.
Christy says
Oh awesome, Fonda! Sounds like we both have a lot of painting ahead of us. I went through almost three gallons today and yesterday…I’ll need to by more paint, I’m sure!
Jack did find a desk, BUT because we were getting ready to move and time was limited to work on projects, and he chose to spend his time with friends instead…I had to go ahead and paint it to get it out of the garage. I did buy it from him though and doubled his money so he was happy. We’ll go looking again when we get settled.
The drawers to the dresser were on these sliders and the drawers were screwed into the sliders, but even after removing all the visible screws, I couldn’t get the drawers out. It worked out in the end, and that dresser sold in my shop today! 🙂
Kylie says
Hi Christy,
Great job once again. Love it. I recently updated a small bedside chest of drawers with the same drawer sliders. I found it quite a challenge to paint so decided to leave them the colour they were (which was a light brown stain). I am curious how you dealt with this issue.
Thanks,
Kylie
Christy says
Thank you, Kylie! I just painted around them as best I could. It was a challenge but definitely doable!
Mary Ann says
Oh you lucky lady! That is the exact style of dresser I’m looking for. Good luck with the move, exciting times!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary Ann! That dresser didn’t last long in my booth at all. Kind of wish I had kept it to use as storage in my office! Oh well…need to look for another one! XO
Nancy says
Great job! Beautiful..
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! XO
