Hi lovely people! It’s time for my Tool Girl Crew and I to break out the power tools and build something! This month’s challenge is to make something out of wood for Fall. My first thought was a sign, but then I decided I needed something for entry way table to add a little something there for Fall.
Here is what I started with:
A 1X6 and a cheap fence picket, both from my curbside fence picket score, and a spindle I salvaged from this weird half chair I found at a thrift store forever ago:
I finally gave up on coming up with an idea for it and just cut the spindles off the back of it and called it a day.
Today they found their calling!
This little crate turned out so cute. I call it a crate because of the bottom…
The sides are made from the 1X6 and the bottom is made from the cheap fencing.
Here’s a pictorial of how this came together:
- Cut the pieces as shown. I used my table saw and miter saw, but you could easily use a jig saw to cut your pieces as well.
- Sand surfaces smooth.
- Paint. I used Rustoleum’s Eden and Satin White.
- Build the sides. I added a bit of wood glue first, then used my nail gun, but regular nails and a hammer work great too.
- Add the bottom pieces. I used the cheap fencing for this part. This is how they looked after lightly sanding.
- Add handle last, so you can cut it to fit perfectly.
I also decided to age the surfaces a bit to match the handles that were already that way. I used a bit of stain in Dark Walnut and just wiped it on in small sections and wiped it right back off. I also stained what you could see of the pieces on the bottom, outside. I left the inside as is.
The white mini-pumpkins came from Homegoods, but started out orange…
A little paint in Heirloom white and a spritz of Stone paint for texture (optional) quickly transform them.
You probably realized by now that I made a green one too!
Think I prefer the white though…
My friends have been building fun things for Fall too! Visit the links below to see them all. 🙂

UPDATE: After sitting in my booth for several months, the green one got a whole new look, AND sold almost right away! Check it out HERE.
Have a great day!

The crate is so cute. I don’t have a table saw, do you think a circular saw wiĺl work?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Debra! It might be tricky with a circular saw since the pieces are small, but a jig saw would definitely work!

LOVE. THESE!
Plus if you ever want to change colors after a few years, they’re easy to paint and a little distressing can let the original peek through too. I’ve got some picket fence slats in the garage and I think I know their purpose now! Thank you!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Anele! Yes, absolutely…that green will be cool peeking through if I ever decide to paint it later! XO
