Hello beautiful Friends! Thank you so much for all the well-wishes on our new home last week! We are in full-on packing mode around here since we close on our new house on Friday!! I can’t believe it’s almost here already. We won’t actually move until the following Friday, but I plan to be very busy next week at the new house, so I have been packing my little heart out. Please tell me I’m not the only one that has packed boxes of absolute crap because I just didn’t have it in me to go through it all??
Needless to say I am pulling out an old favorite today. I am sharing a dresser I redid two Summers ago.
I came back from a 4th of July getaway with my hubby and the boys and walked into my booth that looked like this:
I had looked more like this before I left:
See more of my booth space HERE. Several pieces including that large white hutch had sold.
I needed to find a couple of big pieces to fill it back up, so I stopped by one of my favorite thrift stores and spied this brown beauty:
Ok so it wasn’t exactly beautiful, but I was in need and this was in great working condition. The insides of the drawers were immaculate and had no musty odor. That’s not easy to find on these older pieces.
I wanted to reshare this dresser makeover because I thought the before and after was pretty dramatic…
with it’s new fabric treatment:
What brown dresser? I was so thrilled with how this turned out! It doesn’t even look like the same dresser. These drawers were perfect for adding fabric.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love too.
I have used this fabric a lot in the past. I love it for its sophistication, for its stain-hiding power, and because it is still pretty neutral.
I found it Hancock Fabrics. So sad they went out of business, and I have used just about all of this fabric that I had. (I heard Michaels bought them, so I’m anxious to see where that goes.)
The paint is my go-to DIY chalk paint (recipe and video on how to mix HERE), using Behr’s Cottage White. It is a pretty creamy white, and the same color I used on my kitchen cabinets.
I sanded the edges and added a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear wax, with two coats on top.
I reused the original hardware since I really liked them:
They turned out pretty. All the hardware was updated using Rustoleum Spray Paint in Heirloom White.
Lightly sanding them (or a couple of scrapes on the garage floor works too) brought out the pretty details.
Adding the fabric is pretty straight-forward.
I prepped the drawers by painting, sanding, and waxing the areas that would not be covered in fabric first. Then I cut the panels using my rotary cutter and cutting mat. Be careful not to handle the fabric too much to help prevent the edges from fraying. (The rotary cutter helps with that.)
To attach the fabric to the drawer fronts, I used matte Mod Podge…
I just painted it on with a decent brush and then laid the fabric right on top…
(I use a two or three inch chip brush to add my Mod Podge these days. You can find them at Michaels or Home Depot for around a dollar.)
I used to add another coat over the fabric, but not any more. It alters the color a bit and I don’t think it’s necessary. You can add a little to any edges that might be frayed to smooth them down if need-be.
If you mess it up, just pull it off and reposition it.
After I was just about finished painting this dresser, I realized that I had this night stand with very similar lines:
So I redid that to match. You can see it HERE.
I’ll be back with my Furniture Fixer Uppers on Thursday and I’ll have a brand new makeover! I’ll be sharing how I changed up this dresser:
Meanwhile I’ll be here packing, packing, and packing. 🙂
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Tresa Johnson says
I love this dresser. Good to know the Mod Podge isn’t needed as a topcoat on the fabric.
We too are packing up to move in the next week. I just warned my husband that I didn’t go through the buffet and hutch drawers, that it would be just as easy to move with them loaded! So yes, I too am moving a bunch of crap that I don’t have time to go through.
Good luck and congrats on the move and new house.
Christy says
Thank you, Tresa! Oh girl, I feel your pain…this moving thing is a lot of work! Good luck to you too! XO
Paula says
Good luck with your packing. I can’t imagine how much work it is to move!
Christy says
Thank you, Paula! You just don’t realize how much stuff you have until you have to box it all up lol! XOXO

That is good new about Michael’s buying Hancock Fabrics. And congrats on the new house. Great makeover.
Christy says
Thanks, Debra! I was happy to hear about Michaels and Hancock Fabrics as well. I’m interested to see what happens there! XO
Christina in FL says
Oh Christy, you are NOT the only one who packs boxes with stuff you don’t want to go through. This dresser looks phenomenal. Thanks for the tip about not mod podging over the fabric.
I am thrilled for and with you about your new home.
Christy says
Ha ha SO happy to hear that I am not alone! As I am packing I am thinking of all the things I will stash away for my next yard sale when I unpack. Glad you like this dresser, and thank you for your sweet well wishes on the new home…I can’t believe I have only a few days to go! XOXO
Melinda says
Wonderful! Do you deliver? lol.. Take it easy with packing and have a big ‘ole garage sale when you get where you’re going. I had to get rid of half my junk when we made the move from Michigan to South Carolina. It is the old adage you can’t take it with you….but I believe that was heaven, right? anyway have a great week and can’t wait for Thursdays surprise.
Christy says
Thanks, Melinda! I definitely need to have a garage sale when I get where I’m going ha ha. How do we accumulate SO much stuff?? See ya Thursday! XOXO
Denise says
I love that dresser and matching night stand! As always, great work. Good luck with your packing. Been there, done that and never will again. If I have to, I’m getting movers (LOL). One question: do you ever sleep?? Take care and good luck! Denise
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! Luckily we are getting movers to move our belongings, but we are still packing it all. You just don’t realize how much stuff you have until you have to put it all in boxes, right?? And yes, I do sleep ha ha. I try not to work past dinner time so I can relax at night! XOXO
Cecilia says
I totally get packing up junk because you can’t deal with it! When you have limited time, it’s just easier to pack it and go through when you unpack! Fortunately I have time to go thru my stuff before we move to the farm but I have a feeling there will still be junk when it comes down to it.
I love this dresser! That fabric…❤️. I’m sad Hancock Fabrics went out of business too. It’s hard to find places that sell lots of fabric. Hm, I wonder if Michael’s will add a fabric section?
Best wishes for your upcoming closing and move!
Christy says
Yes absolutely, Cecilia! I know I’ll have a nice big pile of stuff for my next yard sale when I unpack! I’m so sad I can no longer find this fabric…hoping Hancocks will at least have an online presence. I guess we’ll see eventually! Thank you for the well-wishes for our move!! XOOX
Marcie Lovett says
Good luck with the move, Christy! And, no, you are NOT the only one who packs crap you probably won’t ever look at again. Moving is so stressful, and just getting through it is the goal right now.
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! And so glad to hear that ha ha! I will have a lot to go through when I unpack it all for sure, but yes the goal is to get through it for now! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
This dresser makeover turned out beautifully. Congrats on the new home. Can’t wait to see what it looks like and how you guys will dress it up for Halloween!!!! Love those fantastic Halloween decorations of yours! No need to respond to this message as I know you are busy packing and with a million other things. Hope it all goes well.
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie! Our neighbors here are super bummed that we won’t be here to decorate for Halloween this year! We are hoping there are no restrictions as far as Halloween in our new neighborhood. It will be fun to have a new layout to play with!! XOXO
Nancy Walden says
I found a very similar fabric at JoAnn. It’s a light-weight denim with french addresses and postmarks. The print is mostly black but also has some gray tones and a bit of blue. I made slipcovers for my dining room chairs. Now I’m wondering if there is something I could use the remnants on!
Christy says
Oh that sounds pretty, Nancy! I need to look for that next time I’m in JoAnns! XO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Love the inlaid fabric, Christy! <3 And I can't wait to see your next project on Thursday 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Jen!! I think this is the makeover I used for our first trash to treasure Tuesday! 🙂 XOXO
Margie says
Love this dresser, lucky customers. Good luck on the move you should schedule a spa day soon after move????.
Christy says
Thanks, Margie! I love the way you think…I’ll need a spa day!! XOXO
Sonja says
Christy, a huge congratulations on your new home! Not so exciting to be packing (lots of hard work and long hours etc) but it will be over soon and you’ll be in your new home. I’m sure we all start out packing with every good intention of keeping things organized and then as we go along and tiredness seeps in and time is short, plan A is shelved! I’m sure you’re doing an amazing job whichever way you flip it!!
As for your dresser, I love it!!! Oh how I wish I had access to the shops/stores you have in the U.S.
WIshing you all the best with your move and trust it will go smoothly.
Be well
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sonja! No packing is definitely not exciting, but the end result is for sure! And yes, I started out great…until I got to my teenage son’s room…lot’s of crap got packed in that room ha ha. I told him he’s the one unpacking it all and going through it! After visiting my brother and realizing he only had one thrift shop in his town, I was very grateful for having so many near me…I try not to take that for granted!XOXO
Kelly says
Christy your work is always so beautiful! I just moved into a new home in June. Packing was a bear though I did have movers.
During the move, as one of the movers was passing me on the way into the house he said: “you have a lot of stuff!” That’s something when even the movers comment on it!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Kelly! You definitely have felt my pain then ha ha. This moving thing sure is a lot of work! Funny that even the movers thought you had a lot of stuff! 😀
Rose Lefebvre says
Love how the dresser turned out. You have done it again! Such talent!
Christy says
Aw thanks, Rose! 🙂
