This is the story of one of my latest estate sale finds. This particular estate sale had a lot of goodies, but it was a bit pricey. That is until we made it to the garage and found this little baby ( I think the men were in charge of pricing everything in the garage!), and a beautiful side table my mom purchased for $20.
Here is the before:
I love the lines of it and I think it’s really pretty just as it is, although it looks better in the picture than it does in real life.
I thought it would make a perfect addition to my master bedroom, but since just about all of the furniture in there are wood tones, this piece would be a more fun addition if it were painted.
Here are the results:
And something unexpected…
Stripes! I love it!
I kept the original hardware. They are difficult to see in some of these photos against the dark drawers, but in reality, they are the perfect fit for this piece as is. I lightened this photo a bit so you could see them better:
For the main body, I used Annie Sloan Pure White:
For the drawer fronts and stripe detail, I used Annie Sloan’s Graphite:
I sanded the edges slightly and added a coat of clear wax:
The plate wall is new also. These plates are thrift store finds and I think I spent less than $10 for all of them.
My mom told me I’m missing one on the bottom right. She didn’t seem to want to accept the fact that I like it that way.
Painting this piece provided a nice contrast to all the wood tones in this room.
Want to know how much I paid for it?
Just $35! Can I get a woo hoo?!!
And as you can see, it has a mirror and a secret cubby! Ooh maybe a place to hide my chocolate stash??
This is what sold me on it (besides the fact that it was only $35). I love this detail!
I lined the center with the same liner I used on my harlequin box.
I also lined the drawers:
I think those are the details that make a piece special.
I hope you like this little makeover!
It will be loved and treasured for years to come now that it has found a happy home in my bedroom! As always, thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂

I love the dressing table! I’ve always had a vanity or something I could use as a vanity. I’m using an old child’s desk now and was wondering what to do to dress it up. You kick started the ideas. Now I’ll start shopping for paint. Wish mine had a secret cubby for my chocolate. How did you hang the plates on the wall? I can’t see any plate hangers clinging to them.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sandra! The only advice I can give on the plates is this: Do not use gorilla tape and paper clips ha ha! I thought for sure that would be enough to secure them. There are plate hangers I found online, but they cost more than I paid for the plates! I lost one of the bigger plates last night. Luckily, I have another just like it. If I find any other bright ideas on how to hang them, I’ll pass it along! 🙂

Hi Sandra, I found this post:
http://thefrugalhomemaker.com/2012/03/29/hanging-plates-on-the-wall-with-diy-free-plate-hangars/
on how to make invisible plate hangers for free! I’m going to give it a go. I lost one plate with my method, so I took the rest down until I found a better solution…can’t wait to get my plates back up! 🙂

I used the Annie Sloan on a lot of projects before I tried my own and loved it, but not the cost. The version I made actually goes on a bit smoother and I get the exact same results!

This piece is gorgeous! You’ve got a great vision for design Christy. The interior details are perfect too. This actually reminds me a little of a striped vanity I painted a few months ago- I used AS graphite and old white and then both clear and dark wax. Thank you for sharing at Throwback Thursday!
