Hello lovely Friends! Can you even believe it’s February already?? Crazy! You know I share a lot of makeovers around here, right? (I mean, a LOT.) SO my Trash to Treasure Tuesday pals and I thought instead of bringing you only ONE new makeover this month as part of that series, why not dig through our archives, find our favorites, and share one EVERY Tuesday this month?
I’ve picked a few that I just love! Today I’m resharing this estate sale beauty:
I purchased it at an estate sale at this lovely little beach cottage (if you’re visiting from a mobile device, this picture may be sideways and I don’t know why sorry!):
About six houses from the ocean…yes, please!
I bought several pieces from that sale including this pretty beat-up hutch. I found it in the shed being used for tools. What a crime against quaint little farmhouse hutches!
The top had some serious issues…
And don’t even get me started on these drawers…
Just gross.
So, I decided to buy her and bring her home where she sat in my already-too-full garage for nearly four months. Honestly, it was so dirty and beat up, I was NOT looking forward to this project at all.
But alas I finally got her finished…
And she turned out to be a beauty!
I originally painted the top but ended up sanding it back down and staining it instead. It was the right choice, and I love the result. Remember how beat up it was?
It’s hard to believe this beautiful wood was under that beat up top! This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.
This is after sanding the top:
I used Minwax Minwax Pre Stain Wood Conditioner first. This helps the wood to take the stain evenly.
Then I added three coats of Minwax Dark Walnut wood stain with a foam brush going with the grain, letting it soak in for a minute or so, and wiping the excess with a clean cloth after each application. (You can also wipe the stain on with a clean soft cloth, also going in the direction of the grain.)
I sealed with two coats of Minwax Wipe-On Poly, sanding lightly with 220 grit sandpaper between coats.
And those nasty drawers? They lost their velvet lining and got a fresh new clean look:
So much better! I lined the drawers with scrapbook paper, applied with Mod Podge. (Coat of MP on the bottom, apply paper, smooth out wrinkles with an old credit card, apply MP over top. May still have a few wrinkles that will be hard to smooth out.) I like a patterned paper like this one to camouflage imperfections.
The knobs came from Hobby Lobby:
Perfectly subtle.
I used DIY Chalk paint although this piece required a coat of primer as well. I sealed it with Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax.
A little sanding in just the right places…
I dressed it up with some of my thrift store ironstone, mixed with a few beachy aqua pieces I purchased at Homegoods a few years ago. They look right at home!
The ironstone bowls and plates were part of a thrift store score…35 pieces for $6.25 for the set. Um yes, I’ll have THEM ALL.
Seriously, the sticker is still on the inside one of the bowls:
The Beach Cottage Sign is one I made using pickets from our old gate. Click HERE to see more about that.
This little lady was so lucky I came along and rescued her.
She sold in less than a week. That always makes me happy…and sad. Cash in the pockets, but all that hard work and I’ll never see her again. It’s funny how you become attached to some pieces you redo!
But wait! There’s more!
My super talented and thrifty friends are each sharing a favorite trash-to-treasure of theirs today too:1. Bless’er House 2. Artsy Chicks Rule 3. Girl in the Garage 4. Prodigal Pieces
Hope you enjoyed these makeovers!
I’ll be back on Thursday sharing what I did with this $5 thrift store tray:
UPDATE: See it HERE now! I’m magic like that. 🙂

I had forgotten all about this piece! What a great makeover, it’s no wonder it sold quickly.
I wanted to tell you that I’m moving into a new space after school today! 🙂

Thanks, Paula! I know…I share a piece and all the hard work that went into it only to never be shared again. That’s why we decided to revisit a few oldies this month. And yay!!! I’m so glad you found a new space!! Can’t wait to see pictures! 🙂

Your poor ugly little hutch turned out fabulous, just gorgeous. If I were in the market for a hutch and came across this gorgeous girl I would buy her in a New York second.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Patty! I’m so glad she got a whole new chance to be loved again. 🙂

Terrific makeover Christy. I guess you have to sell some things so you have money to buy more! FYI, I may not post a comment each time I visit your blog, but know that I check out all your posts:)

Thanks, Girlie! It’s a shame for these favorites to sit gathering dust…glad we could bust them out one more time! 🙂
Jenny @ Refresh Living says
I love this hutch!! I remember reading this post when you published it, and I think it was a great one to bring back up. I love your groups’ idea to bring up your old thrifted posts every month!!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks! We usually share a new trash to treasure every Tuesday, but its a shame that old posts just get forgotten, so we decided to revive all old ones every Tuesday in February. I love that these great projects are getting another chance to shine and I don’t have to sweat to get content out…double bonus! 🙂
