Hi there and welcome to Day #10 in this fun thrifty makeover series!
Today’s makeover is pretty quick and simple. I started with this tray I found at the thrift store for $2:
Can’t pass up a perfectly good wooden whatever-this-is, right? There wasn’t much to it, but I figured I could make something out of it.
To me it looked like it could be a small drawer if it had a knob, so I gave it the feel of a repurposed drawer:
Here it is in my dining room hutch holding a few ironstone pieces.
I gave this a coat of Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint first. (It’s what I had on hand.) It allows the darker color to show through after sanding instead of new wood.
The feet were in a bin of lamp parts my dad passed along to me. He used to use them in the neck of lamps he once made. They’re not too shabby as feet for this tray! I used E6000 Glue to attach them.
The best part? The inside! I Mod Podged pretty green paper in the bottom…
Here I used it as a place to display some favorite jewelry pieces:
The possibilities are endless. 🙂
These posts are really making me ready for yard sale season, how about you??
I’ll be back tomorrow sharing how I updated this server:
See ya then!

Yes, I’m so very ready for yard sales. They make me happy! 🙂 Thrift stores’ prices are just “too high” comparatively. Can hardly wait! Great, cute piece you made!! You always pay such fine attention to detail. Lovely, lovely piece.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Robin! I agree…you find much better deals at yard sales and I can’t wait either! 🙂
Becky says
It’s so cute! I’ve had something almost the same pinned for a while now. Just waiting for warm enough weather to be able to use a saw without cutting my numb fingers off. Love your colors!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Becky! The freezing temps have really prevented me from getting out there and getting things done too. I’ve had to stick to a lot of small projects lately!
Sue Farmer says
Love this and I am going to do it!!! I bought a couple of unfinished trays a while back. Am going to take the plunge and make them look pretty!!! Wish me luck (I am not a DIYer I hate to admit)
Christy K. James says
Yay Sue! Go for it!! You can totally do this. 🙂

I adore your tray – everything about it from the knob, the feet, and that pretty green paper. Only you could turn a plain ordinary wooden box into something this fabulous Christy!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie!! I knew this simple box could be a star someday. 🙂
Pamela says
Goodness! You are a really talented lady. I have been following your series and am amazed at how many things you have come up with. When your projects show up in my inbox, I smile. A big broad smile. And maybe some of these, I could try (being a novice) Your ability and creativity are a true gift. Thank you for sharing.
*Smiles*
Christy K. James says
Oh Pamela you just made my day!! Thank you for the lovely comment! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Ruth Anne says
The faux drawer tray is so attractive! You showed two uses for it–both are great looks. I might be tempted to put it in the middle of my dining room table and fill it with Springy things and ceramic rabbits. Adding the feet made it look so high-end! Thanks for sharing yet another really fine makeover!
Christy K. James says
Oh I love that idea for it, Ruth Anne! That would be perfect for Spring! 🙂
Heather @ Viral Upcycle says
I love the drawer! Yes I am definitely ready to see a few good yard sales. My husband came home and gave me some free time without the little one in tow and I spent a whole 2 hours at thrift stores! Now to find the time to do all of the upcycle ;).
Christy K. James says
Oh thrifting alone is a perfect afternoon for me! I am so ready for yard sales too!!
Wendi @ H2OBungalow says

Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sherri! Another reader suggested using it as a centerpiece for the table with a spring vignette in it. I loved that idea too! There are so many possibilities! 🙂
Trish says
I love this. I have an old drawer that I am planning to upcycle.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Trish! I love old drawers for repurposing. 🙂
Liz @ Infuse With Liz says
How cute is that! I have some cute printed sheets of paper I’ve been hanging onto because I couldn’t think of what to do with them. Now I have a vision!
Christy K. James says
That’s great to hear, Liz! It’s fun to be inspired. 🙂
Jennifer H says
I absolutely LOVE this! The feet definitely add a special touch. I’ve had difficulty finding smaller ball type feet for some of my projects – what type of lamp part is this that you used, and where can you buy them? I know you said your dad gave them to you, but just hoping you may have an idea. And are they wood or metal? Thanks!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jennifer! The feet started out as finials like in this photo: http://www.smithwood.com/images/FN8080.jpg My Dad sawed off the top part. Hope this helps!
Jennifer H says
I’m going to look for some today! Thanks so much Christy!!
