Sit, relax and enjoy this FREE project I have to share with you today…a sign made from an old fence picket:
I stood on my new dining room table to get this one (the things I do for you).
This is actually from the gate at my old house. My sister-in-law who still lives near my old house let me know that the new owners were replacing their fence. I love it when friends and family look out for good garbage for me!
I shared a pic of them spilling over the top of my husband’s truck bed on my Facebook page the day I went to claim them, but darned if I can find it! I did take one before just in case:
Pretty ugly, right? We had added a cement pad to the side of our house and these pickets came from the super wide gate to that area, so I got lots of pickets! You should have seen my eleven year old and me trying to hoist those giant gates into the truck!
I love the time-worn edges. You just don’t get that with new wood.
I could see this on a big screened in porch.
I used this method to enlarge my letters. I used this tutorial to transfer my letters.
I used the Edwardian font and the Felix Titling font for these signs.
I painted the base with latex paint and filled in my letters with acrylic paint. After hand sanding them, I sealed them with Rustoleum’s clear matte spray sealer.
I made a few of these for the upcoming Christmas Market. If you happen to be near the Virginia Beach area Thanksgiving weekend, come by and say hello!
My dining room has turned into my craft room since I’m getting down to the wire now!
Here’s the other sign I made a couple of:
I love this because I’d love to someday own a little beach cottage.
That’s my witch outside the door. She’s part of my Spooky Outdoor Halloween Tour.
I love how these turned out and the best part is they cost me nothing to make since I had everything else on hand! I love you, free fence pickets!
UPDATE: I was able to keep one for myself because I didn’t realize one of the pickets was warped, but I love it anyway! More charm, right?
(This is a photo from my recent Summer Home Tour. See the rest of the tour HERE.)

Your signs are to be very envious of. I’d love to make mine look so great since I love to make signs. I’m working on it. I bought some new letter stencils so I’d have more variety to use. I’m still pretty shaky painting in the letters but I give it a go. After they dry I outline them to partially hide my mistakes, it helps. I need to get some stuff to keep the sign nice that you spray on. Happy weekend
Christy K. James says
Thanks, JaneEllen! Happy weekend to you, too! 🙂
