Hello sweet Friends!! Today my Décor Enthusiast Girls and I are back together after a little Holiday hiatus sharing something I love…stenciled projects! I share a bunch of stenciled makeovers around here, but I had to come up with something new for today.
I decided that this folding screen I found at the thrift store a couple of months ago would be a perfect canvas for stencils:
It was $35 and 25% off so I ended up paying $26 for it. I have included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use. Read my full disclosure here.
Here it is all redone and ready for action:
Cute, right??
I always wanted a fancy a screen to change behind like in the movies ha ha.
I bought the stencil I used at Michaels not too long ago. It’s by ArtMinds and I found it over by the art supplies, on the other side of the store from where I would normally find the stencils. HERE is a very similar and less expensive one on Amazon.
To add my stencil, first I measured to see where I wanted to add the stencil and in what pattern. Then I sprayed Loctite Spray Adhesive on the back first to hold it in place. I used a small brush and pure white DIY chalk paint to fill in the stencil, taking care not to brush towards the edges as much as possible:
I only did one coat. Here it is after I removed the stencil:
I continued to add a quick spray of the spray adhesive to the back before moving it to the next spot. (After I was finished, I used an old wash cloth and warm running water to wipe down the stencil on the side with the paint in my kitchen sink, then let it lay sticky side up on a paper towel to dry.)
I sanded generously with 220 grit sandpaper after to smooth it all out:
The base coat is Gray Morning by Behr and Ultra Pure White 50/50 mix made into DIY Chalk Paint, easily my favorite blue hue.
I am on the prowl for new colors though…wanting to add something new to the mix.
I decided to break up the damask pattern with two panels of stripes…
{That chair was a DIY cover made from drop cloth. See the full tutorial HERE. The sign above the door is a Pottery Barn knock-off I made a couple of years ago. You can see more of that HERE.}
The stripes add a bit of a casual coastal vibe in my opinion. I used FrogTape for delicate surfaces to add them.
I sealed it with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax.
This was fun to do since I’ve never painted a folding screen before. I hope you enjoyed it too!

I’ve seen many screens but never one as pretty as this one. I have one made out of shutters and I may just paint it in a very similar color. I do have one question if you have time; I bought a bread box at the thrift store the other day and it’s in good shape. It’s wood and the front has a copper insert with the word “BREAD stamped with raised letters. Not sure what color to paint it and I have a pot rack hanging in my kitchen with copper pots so kinda wanted to keep the copper. Could you help me come up with a color that goes with copper besides off-white or should I stick with off-white? Greatly appreciate any suggestions. Can’t wait until next Tues.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Janice! Sounds like you found a pretty bread box! Are there other colors in your kitchen that you are using? I do use a lot of whites…you know me well, but I do think black would also be a pretty contrast to the copper, but not sure if that is too dark for you. <3

Christy, SO pretty! I love how you did two different prints on the panels, and they really compliment each other. 🙂 Looking forward to seeing what new color(s) your bring in.
TV console is still in the works. With my job, family, etc., I’m having a hard time getting it finished. =/
Christy says
Thanks, Julie! I am hoping to go looking for some colors to play with today…it’s not easy to break out of my norm ha ha! And I totally get it about the console…life is busy!! XO 🙂
Marcie Lovett says
Beautiful, Christy! Love the contrast of the stripes with the stencil. This could not have been easy, given the size. Did you paint the back, too?
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie!! I did paint the back, but it is just the solid blue… and between you and me, I still need to wax the back lol. XO
Annie says

Thank you, Nancy!! I thought the stencil might be kinda boring on all four panels, so I’m glad I added the stripes to break it up! XOXO

Fonda Rush says
I really want a screen like this to decorate as I see fit. I want mine to “hide” the litter boxes! And, you found it and made it your own! Wonderful! Love what you did to it!
Christy says
Thank you, Fonda! That was the first time I had ever seen folding screen at the thrift store and they had two, probably donated by the same person. The other one had a more Asian feel and I believe was paper in the center. Using one to hide the litter boxes is a great idea! XO
Christy @ Our Southern Home says
What a gorgeous screen! I have got to try that stencil spray. Makes it so much easier!
Christy says
Thanks, Christy! Yes that spray sure does help!! XO
