Well hello there, Friends! Back again so soon? I’m so glad you are! I have a furniture makeover to share with you today. Are you up for that?
Today I’m sharing a desk that my neighbor asked if I could paint for her last Summer. To be honest, I really prefer not to paint furniture for other people. I just don’t like the pressure that comes with it. What if I ruin it? Yikes! Plus I don’t have the space nor the time to take on more than I already have.
I did agree to paint this desk for my neighbor though because she just wanted a simple paint job and there wasn’t much to it:
I love the lines of French Provincial Furniture and knew this would be pretty painted.
Here’s how it looks now:
I’ve been using a lot of Pure White lately, but this is my favorite off white paint color, Cottage White by Behr, made into chalk paint. I love it mixed with Pure White as well.
The top was in pretty rough shape…
Sometimes the best fix is to cover it right up.
I did sand it just a bit to smooth it out first.
My hydrangeas are just waking up…can’t wait to have these beautiful blooms again.
Painting this light of a color over dark usually takes three coats. I sanded and sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear wax as usual. See my chalk painting tutorial HERE if you want to see a step-by-step on how to chalk paint furniture.
I kept all the original hardware, it’s so pretty. I gave them a couple of coats of Rustoleum spray paint in Heirloom White.
The chair is from my dining set, but works perfectly with this beautiful desk.
You can see their makeover HERE, and my tutorial for adding piping to dining chairs (Sew and No-Sew methods) HERE.
It really adds a nice finishing touch…
This was a simple makeover, but now this piece has a fresh new attitude!
And my neighbor loved it. I also did the chair to match, but she brought that as she was picking up the desk. Not sure why she didn’t think to have me do them both together.
Sure wish I had an office space of my own for a beautiful desk like this. My office is just a desk…in the living room. Some day. 🙂
Coming up tomorrow is the makeover of this pretty flatware chest I found for $5:
See you then, awesome Friends!

Ha ha! I cannot wait for my hydrangeas to be in full bloom. I missed them this winter so I went looking for some to purchase and they wanted $5 a head!! What? I decided I just have to be patient! 🙂

Hi Christy! The French provincial style certainly is beautiful and the desk if gorgeous! Too bad your friend took it back to her home. Sure looks beautiful right where it was in yours. Thanks so much for sharing!
Christy K. James says
Thank you…I love this style too, Joanne! I would love to have been able to keep it! 🙂

That desk is beautiful. It looks like a completely different piece of furniture. I believe this might be number 3 on my list.
May I ask for your help with a couple of pieces of very old furniture I have and would like to paint. I have had them a long time but when I got them they are totally down to the bare wood and very dry.. Is there a product I should put on these pieces to prepare them for painting. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Treva! If you were planning to stain your pieces, I would suggest Minwax Wood Conditioner first. If you want to paint them, I would probably just start painting. Good luck!

I just love this desk makeover! You have definitely inspired me to diy a dresser I was going to replace. I am so enjoying your 30 days series. I look forward to seeing what you come up with every day.

Thank you, Melva!! It’s amazing what paint can do to revive a piece of furniture! You might enjoy this post as well if you haven’t seen it already, my Mom’s dresser makeover: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/oak-dresser-makeover/ SO excited that you are feeling inspired! XO

Love, love, love the desk! Wish I had a dedicated space of my own…someday… Looking forward to seeing what you do with the silverware box. I have one that MIL used as jewelry box and it is utilitarian and just plain uuuuugggggly.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Donna!! I wish I had my own space as well! I just love old silverware boxes, and I think you’ll like what I did with this one! 🙂

I love the desk. I love this month of makeovers. Lots of fun and I Can’t wait until tomorrow. I have a few silverware chests that hold smalls…..beads, etc. I have two that aren’t redone yet, so it will be fun to see what you do with yours tomorrow.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Eileen! I’m so glad you are enjoying the fun so far. The chest I’m sharing tomorrow has a bit of a romantic feel to it. XO
Marie, the Interior Frugalista says
Very pretty makeover Christy, your neighbor must have been pleased. I totally hear you about client commissions. I made the decision very recently to stop doing them for the same reasons you mentioned above.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I really try not to do pieces for others. (Although tomorrow’s makeover is for someone else lol.) She texted me a couple of weeks later to ask if I could paint two bookcases to match that were also in her office. Um, no thanks! 😉
