Well hello there! I’m so glad you dropped by… because I love when you visit! Come on in, I have a great chair makeover to share with you today.
Do you remember these fabulous finds I dragged home from Lucketts?
Remember how I was calculating how much less room I would have in my car if I brought my oldest son along? Even with him taking up prime real estate in the back seat, I still managed to cram all of these goodies in! Isn’t that bed in the back gorgeous?!
I know it’s a fantastic haul because the whole lot only cost me $54!! (Excluding the paint and wax of course, they cost more than everything you see here combined!) You can read more about my Lucketts trip here.
Well, I am finally getting around to these beauties. They were almost at the bottom of my project pile. The makeover I’ll be sharing is on the cute little chair on the left.
I call it a half chair. If you know what it was used for or what it’s really called, let me know in the comments. I’d love to know, so I can stop belittling it by calling it a “half chair”.
Anyway, I love you, little half chair, and I love that you were only $10!
Here is the before:
(This was taken in the Spring. Remember when my garden was lush and green?)
And here is the after:
It was really dirty before although the picture doesn’t show the extent of it. I gave it a good cleaning before I painted it, but I always feel like paint really washes it clean.
Some pieces I prefer to sand only a little. This chair already had character on its own, so it didn’t need much.
Here it is before I added the stripes.
It needed a little something more and I think the stripes did the trick.
This is my DIY chalk paint with ASCP in Duck Egg blue for the accent color. I used frog tape for my stripes.
I love how it turned out. This will be going in my boys’ bathroom. I’ll be sharing that soon.
This little pillow below is one of two I found at Pier 1 about twelve or so years ago.
I hope you like it as much as I do.
Thanks again for the visit, come by anytime!
XO,

What a cutie of a chair now. Great job.
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Terry 🙂 XO
ScottieV says
How adorable! Love the stripes- they make the piece!! I’m impressed they’re so straight too.
If I am not mistaken, I think it’s a chair for a vanity- generally the kidney shaped kind you put a skirt on.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Scottie! I think you’re right, someone else mentioned that 🙂
Andi says
Very cute chair…but where do you put the grain?? 🙂 Also, if you have a 12-year-old pillow that still looks that nice, you’re just plain mean. 😉

Christy K. James says
Lol! That pillow used to have beautiful tassels made of shells on the corners and they are almost gone! I just threw this in the wash so it was close by for the picture 🙂
Jennifer @ PinkWhen says
You did a great job refinishing and painting that chair. It’s going to look great in the bathroom!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jennifer! I was planning to put it in the boys’ bathroom, but I may just keep it for mine 🙂
Luisa says
What a unique little “half” chair…I love the sweet shape of that little guy!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Luisa! Me too 🙂
Linda says
I have a little half chair just like yours. It has been in the family for at least three generations and I believe started life as a dressing table chair, has sat as a shoe bench in the back hall, served as a seat at a sewing machine table. Hardest working member of the family!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Linda! That’s what someone else said too…nice to know a bit more about it. I’ll be keeping this one for a while! 🙂
June G. says
Pretty cute, Christy! That stripe is just what your little half chair needed!! I have so many chairs, … I just might “borrow” your idea! Thanks for letting us know you used Duck Egg. I was wondering when I saw the first picture.
Have a great day!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, June! This was an easy way to add a little bit of detail…borrow away! 🙂
JP says
Of course, I love this chair…especially with the “glam!”
Christy K. James says
Thanks, JP!

I love this idea! The stripe is such a simple detail… but I immediately knew what you were referencing. Love!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Shannon 🙂
Julia@Happy House and Home says
Hey there! The chair is great! What a great find! Confession of my own – I hope to copy you! I just painted some chairs black and added some glitter, only now the hubby wants the chairs for his workshop…. glitter not cutting it for him! So maybe he’d like your idea of grain sack stripes!
Have a great weekend, Julia
Christy K. James says
Okay so I just hopped over to check out your chairs and they would be perfect done with the “grain sack”! Although, I really like them in black as well. Since they live in the basement anyway, they can be your experiment chairs 🙂

Connie says
I have a chair very similar to yours that I bought long ago at a flea market and agree that it is for a dressing table. I’ve used it in one of the bathrooms for years, still wood finish, but have been thinking of painting it forever. Maybe now I’ll be inspired to get out the paint!
Christy K. James says
At least this gives you an idea of what it looks like painted. Yours is probably in better shape than mine was before. I felt like it needed a good coat of paint to breathe new life into it. Now I love it! Thanks so much for visiting, Connie 🙂
Karie says
Cute, cute chair. Great simple idea for the grain sack design. Thanks for sharing.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Karie! That very simple detail really gave it a personality 🙂

Hi Christy, love your grain sack striped white chair. I am enjoying painting various things with grain stripe too. If I can’t find the real deal I can make a faux.
Joy
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Joy! I am loving the grain stripe these days too. I’ve painted a few things with it…such an easy way to add a little charm. Thanks for visiting! 🙂
Dawn @ We Call It Junkin says
Hi Christy, thank you so much for sharing this at my We Call It Olde Link Up, it’s just wonderful! I have an old chair from childhood I might try this on, if it wouldn’t give my mom a heart attack to paint it, ha ha. I didn’t see my party button among the others – did it not work? I used a “button generator” to create it, so I don’t know if it’s right or not, let me know if you tried it and it didn’t work and I’ll have to spend yet another hour on it…. Thanks again and I hope to see you any Tuesday you have a vintage/antiques/history post to share! -Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com
Christy K. James says
Sorry, Dawn…busy mom here. I just haven’t had a chance to add your button yet. Hope your mom lets you paint your chair! 🙂
Theresa @DearCreatives says
Your chair turned out super cute! Love the color choices too!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Theresa! I probably overuse these colors, but I love them too 🙂
Andrea @ Cloud Nine Chic says
What a lovely project! I have lots of old chairs that I’ve accumulated over time, and you’ve inspired me to get out the paint! I just love the stripes, they make all the difference…
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Andrea! The stripes are such a small detail, but they add so much! Thanks for visiting 🙂
