Hey there, amazing Friends! I just have to say…I have the nicest readers ever! Thank you so much for all the super encouraging comments on Jack’s shelf makeover I shared on Tuesday. He totally loved it, and it made him feel so proud. Now he’s excited to get searching for his next makeover! (And I’m excited that he’s excited about creating…so thank you!!)
Today I’m sharing one of my own makeovers…
I picked up this headboard at the thrift store for $10 a month or so ago:
The bottom right side was damaged and had been glued back together, but I knew I would be cutting that part off anyway.
This month’s Get Your DIY On theme is Chalkboards and I thought this would make the perfect candidate for a chalkboard:
Don’t you think?
This post contains an affiliate link or two so you can find the products I love too.
I cut the legs off using my miter saw first, then sanded the parts where I cut, smooth.
I painted the chalkboard portion using Rustoleum’s Chalkboard Spray Paint. Then I went ahead and “seasoned” the chalkboard by covering the entire surface with chalk and wiping it off.
Next I carefully painted the frame in a 50/50 mix of Behr’s Gray Morning and Ultra Pure White, which I had made into DIY Chalk paint.
Because the original finish was really light, I chose to dry brush white over the blue for a little dimension, then followed with just a little sanding to distress.
I added a coat of Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax to seal it.
I added hanging hooks to add a little more function. They started black, but I spray painted them white with Rustoleum’s Flat White Primer, then with Rustoleum’s Satin White Spray Paint:
Then I took some sand paper to them…
It looks cute here above my $15 yard sale Rolling Kitchen Cart I redid a couple of years ago. Oh how I wish I had more wall space!
Love this faux lavender from Hobby Lobby in my $2 estate sale pitcher.
My crafty Get Your DIY On cohosts are sharing thrifty and creative chalkboard projects today too!

Love the chalk board, I wish I had a wall space for that too. Thanks for the great inspiration and for teaching Jack to be as creative as you. Looking forward to more great stuff from both of you.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Mary! I REALLY want to keep this one ha ha. I was just trying to keep Jack busy this Summer, but I think it agrees with him…and me! 🙂

GREAT conversion Christy!! You took what looked like a sad headstone and turned it into a wonderful information center. 🙂 Rock on!!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina!! Luckily the inset part was nice and smooth so it worked out well! XOXO

Christy says
Thanks, Paula! I hope so…sure wish I had a place for it!! XO
Sherry says
Great flip on the headboard! Yeah I know what you mean by wanting more wall space…sigh.
Christy says
Thanks, Sherry! Yes…more wall space! Open concept is great, but not enough wall space!
Marcie Lovett says
The only redeeming feature I see on the before is the floral spray. You have an eye, Christy! That sad headboard must be so happy you took a saw and paintbrush to it.
Christy says
Aww thanks, Marcie! I’m thrilled it worked out! 🙂
Angelia says
Simply beautiful. Plus, I had no idea you could paint the chalkboard paint right on the wood!
You and Jack create works of art!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Angelia! This surface was pretty smooth, so luckily it took the chalkboard paint pretty well! 🙂
Krista says
Fantastic upcycle, Christy!! This would be an amazing features in a command central area!!
Christy says
Thanks, Krista!! It really would…I wish I had space for a command central! XOXO

I love how you cover every small detail, including where the lavender came from, coz I was wondering that exact thing. Boom, there it is! You’re the best girl! Thanks!
Christy says
I’m glad I covered that for ya, Jackie! I really do love that lavender. I bought it at half off on sale and I that is about $18 worth. ????
Carole says
I love this big chalkboard with hooks. It is so practical. Very nice job as usual.

Your projects are so inspirational to me!!! My heart races as I open your emails to see what’s there! I have learned so much from you! So nice your son has the rehab bug! My daughter never was interested in any of my “crafts” until now. She is all grown up, has an apartment of her own, has a very limited teacher salary budget, and the bug to make her space her own! Thank you for sharing all your talents!
Christy says
Thanks you so much, Chris! Your thoughtful words totally made my day!! We’ll see how long this lasts with my son lol. I’m loving it while it does! XOXO

That looks adorable! I love all of your projects and find some much inspiration here. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. I was wondering what you used on the back of this chalkboard to mount it?
Thank you,
Kristen

Hi,
I’m wondering what kind of sprayer you use?
Christy says
I use Rustoleum chalkboard paint in the spray can for this project, and painted the frame part with a brush. I have used a sprayer for painting though which you can read all about my thoughts on it here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/french-provincial-end-table-update-painted-with-paint-sprayer/ Hope this helps!
