Hello Friends, and welcome to Themed Furniture Thursday!! How about I’ll share my project, and you see if you can guess the theme?
I shared a peek of this kids’ table and these two chairs on Tuesday:
I found the table at the Salvation Army the same day I bought this dated dresser I recently shared, and the chairs were part of a set of four I found at a yard sale last Summer. I paid about $27 for all three pieces. The chairs were in rough shape, but a good sanding fixed them right up:
And of course, fresh paint makes everything shine like new!
Any guesses on the theme?
It’s coastal!
When I think coastal, I actually think soft white washed blues, which I love, but I had this table that I really wanted to have fun with.
Blue and white stripes and whales are pretty darned coastal too, right?
I changed directions a couple of times on the table. I had originally added a ship’s wheel to the center, but it was off-center a bit and it was driving me bananas. I screwed it up trying to fix it and ended up sanding it down to the bare wood and starting over.
I’ve included affiliate links so you can see the products I’ve used.
I didn’t really love the ship’s wheel and decided to go with something else. I found this cute whale in the Silhouette Design Store here. It was just what this little table needed!
I painted the table in latex satin in Behr’s “Inked” from The Home Depot. It’s a beautiful blue that I had originally purchased to paint a dresser for my son’s room. I prefer regular latex paint over chalk paint when I need something super durable like for kids’ furniture. Since this table will take a lot of abuse, I also gave it two coats of Polycrylic.
I chose to spray paint the chairs. They required quite a bit of sanding, then I primed them with Rustoleum Spray Primer. I painted them using Rustoleum’s Universal All Surface Spray Paint. It’s so much easier to just spray the chairs! I sanded the edges just lightly before adding the stripes.
To tape off the stripes I used Frogtape, and removed it immediately after applying the second coat of blue.
I decided not to sand the blue areas or the table.
I gave the seats two coats of Polycrylic as well.
It’s super sturdy and it’s a great size. My youngest is almost is almost six and it fits him perfectly!
He was more than happy to try it out!
I think it would make a great addition to a kid’s room. This table will take a lot of abuse I’m sure, but it will see so many sweet things in the future too!
And do you see the little teapot feature in the garden in the background?
I shared a picture of it in my garden a few years ago and got so many questions about it. I actually bought this from a craft fair, but decided to make one so I could share the tutorial. Here is my version in another part of my garden…
You can see the full tutorial for it HERE. It would make a great gift! As much as I love the little bunny one I made, the white one really pops against all the green.
Ok back to whales and stripes!
My furniture flippin friends are also sharing coastal-inspired furniture makeovers today!

The table and chairs are so cute. I’ve always loved that schoolhouse style of chair. They’re so well built – sturdy and attractive. Been looking for some reasonably priced ones for so long. Maybe someday I’ll find them. Great project. Thanks for sharing.

It is super cute!! I recently purchased a wooden whale wall hanging to go in my coastal themed dining room. They add a nice change. A crab would be cute also. So is this a keeper for your son? I have a hard time letting go of my projects since I don’t have a booth or anything, they usually end up as gifts. But that’s OK too. Thx for sharing your inspirations !
Christy says
Thanks, Gina! I painted one for my son a couple of years ago and it’s still going strong. This one will go in my booth…hoping a sweet little one (or more) will get years of use out of this! 🙂

Just the cutest table, good for girls or boys. My daughter would love for me to do this for my granddaughter…I will be on the lookout for a set to paint. And I have always adored these teapots and plan to make one too. You are an inspiration and I look forward to your posts.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Terry! Kids’ furniture is a lot of fun to paint. I think I remember you making a teacup and saucer lamp years ago? I keep wanting to try that! 🙂

Christy you threw me for a loop with the blue and I didn’t guess it was your work, but of course now that I see the pieces together I see it has your signature impeccable taste and craftmanship! That whale is adorable. What a sweet set ready for a child or children to enjoy!

What an adorable set for a child. I love the stripes on the chairs and the cute whale on the table top. I usually see sets like this in girly colors or themes and its good to see one painted so that it could be used for either a boy or a girl.
Christy says
Thanks, Paula! Isn’t it funny that I automatically planned to paint it for a boy? I guess because I have boys…it never occurred to me to paint it girly lol! 🙂
