Hello lovely Friends! We are a bit drenched in our area this weekend…perfect weather for working indoors on a few small thrifty makeovers, wouldn’t you agree?
Today I’m sharing one I found a couple of weeks ago. I knew it was still perfectly functional, just a little outdated:
A quick paint job (DIY chalk paint), and it’s fresh and new again!
I love you, paint.
So much better…unless of course you are a huge mallard fan, then I’m truly sorry I ruined this.
I was going to paint the word “keys’ or “mail” or “mallard” (not really) on the front, but I was feeling a bit lazy and found this old handle in my hardware stash instead.
I had painted it a while back to see if paint would make it look less dated and I didn’t think it helped much, but I ‘m liking it on this little makeover.
Here’s how I attached it to the front since I couldn’t really screw it in from the other side:
Let dry for a good 24-48 hours.
I removed the brass key holders before painting and gave them a coat of Rustoleum’s oil rubbed bronze. You know I love to share pics of spray painting in action for your DIY pleasure, but I don’t have one this time.
And with mail…
So much function in this little treasure!
Sometimes the smallest projects are the most fun!
If the rain clears enough to take pics of my sectional, I’m doing it, otherwise I’ll be back on Friday sharing what I did with these:
Update: Check out what I did with these tea towels here now!
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Cute update, Christy! It is pouring here and I’m about to go walk the dog in it. Ughh!
I can’t believe that you’ve already finished reupholstering your sectional. I can’t wait to learn how you did it.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Paula! I saw that pic of you walking Sherman in the rain yesterday…the only downside to have a pup! And yes, my sectional is done…it took me six days, but it’s done yay! Try to stay dry today!

I like it! When I saw it in it’s original state I thought you would paint it (of course) and stencil mail or keys. So when I saw the old drawer hardware I’m going “OH she surprised me”. I have many DIY projects around my house and I have either beach, seashore, or some other coastal words on them, so it’s nice to change it up a bit. Hope the sun shines soon for you!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha I originally planned to do exactly what you thought I would, but I’m glad the plan changed. 🙂
Tonya says
Oh wow! This is so freaking cute!! I would never have envisioned this outcome from the original piece. A real grand slam. Keep them coming!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tonya! XO
Kristine Kerby says
Gosh, Christy, I almost didn’t look at your blog this morning because I thought I’m not interested in a mail/key holder, but now I want one! That turned out so cool! I should have known! Everything you do is fantastic! Love your blog!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha, Kristine! I almost didn’t even take a before photo because I didn’t think it would be anything special after a little paint, but I’m so glad I did. Thank you for the sweet comment!! XO

I am waiting with baited breath to see your sectional slipcover but now I’m equally anxious to see what the heck you did with those Halloween dish towels. I don’t know girl, I think you should’ve painted “mallard” in honor of that cute little “stylish” duck you painted over. LOL Another from drab to fab makeover from you!!!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha! Yes I think “mallard” might have been the way to go lol. I can’t wait to share my sectional! Hopefully we’ll get some sunshine in the forecast this week so I can take pictures! XO

So cute and functional. The reason I love your blog is because you don’t go to HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. and buy things just to display around your home and then take pictures of them for you blog. You find discards and turn them into treasures. You are helping the problem of over spending and too much stuff in our little world and making it a prettier and more functional place to live. I hope you never stop re-creating outdated “stuff”.
Christy K. James says
Well thank you very much, Carole! I do love a good Cinderella story. 🙂 And I love that I saved something that was trash to someone else! Thanks so much for following along with me, I truly appreciate it! XO
Tania says
Wow… that looks great, love the hardware addition!

So creative! The pull is an adorable touch! This weekend was our pumkin picking trip..rained out! It was nice to spend some time around the house though.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Heather! Sorry your pumpkin picking got rained out. I managed to get some much needed cleaning done today so that was a good thing! XO
Jenna says

Ha ha thanks, Jenna 🙂

I couldn’t imagine what you would do with this. The outcome is wonderful. I do love the handle on the front. I have quite a few of those too.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jolinda! I almost didn’t take a before picture since I was just going to paint it and stick in my booth, but the handle made different. Glad I did now. 🙂
Patricia B says
Well, now I know what to look for at the thrift store! Although I love mallards, real ones, I love, love, love your makeover. Gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Patricia!! XO
Toni Perry says
Christy, I’ve just gotta say, you are really great at this! I look at some of the before pictures of these things you find, and can’t imagine what to do with them. But I’m always impressed with how you can see what the possibilities are. I enjoy seeing what you do, and gives me inspiration. Thanks and keep the ideas coming.
Christy says
Thank you SO much for your very kind words, Toni!! And thanks for following along with me! 🙂
Ann Ryan says
What make nail gun do you use thanks
Christy says
Hi Ann! I use a Passlode nail gun which I believe came from Lowes. I love it because it doesn’t use a compressor. 🙂
