Hey there, my awesome Friends! I missed y’all on Thursday! I had a great long weekend, but I’m pretty sure I went up a pant size. I ate a half a batch of chocolate chip cookies myself. In one night. (And they were totally worth it.)
Now it’s time to get back to work stocking my booth for the Holidays, so I can pay for all the things I bought on Black Friday. No I didn’t go out and fight crowds…I found all kinds of great deals online this year! My kind of shopping!
I told you last week that I found several things in my garage that I thought might make good gift items for my booth.
This little chest is one of them:
It had seen better days, and hanging around my garage didn’t do it any favors either, but a new paint job fixed all that:
You may remember a couple of months ago we gave away three awesome Dixie Belle Paint prize packs as one of our Instagram Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday giveaways. The makers of Dixie Belle paints also graciously supplied me with a few samples as well. I rarely turn down free paint.
I had heard great things about their paint but had never tried it before. I always like to try a new-to-me paint on something small first, so this was a perfect project to try out one of the colors I received. (I am not obligated to share them with you, I just like to share when I try something I like.)
This is Driftwood and let me tell you, it went on like a dream, and the coverage was amazing!
It is so smooth, and no sanding or prep required other than a good cleaning first.
I chose to add a simple white stripe to the top of this little chest, then I added these chippy handles from Hobby Lobby for a little interest:
I like that this paint comes in a 16oz size so you have enough for a few good projects, but you aren’t stuck paying for half a can you might not use.
Here was the inside before:
Pretty gross, but I ripped out all that lining, and added a fabric lining instead:
I used Mod Podge to add fabric to the sides first, then I wrapped a piece of foam core in fabric for the lid and the bottom of the inside. Then hot glued them in place.
I thought this could be a great place to store favorite notes, cards, and other mementos…
The box I’m using right now is overflowing! Do you save all the cards you receive? I hate to throw any of them away.
This little cutie will be headed to my booth tomorrow. Hoping someone out there might like to have this under their tree!
I’ll be back on Thursday with my Get Your DIY On Girls with my first Holiday post of the season! We’ll be sharing how we knocked off some high end retailers to create Christmas décor for a fraction of the cost. I just finished my project today and I’m excited to share! 🙂
See ya then!
UPDATE: Bam! Check out what I made for the Holidays HERE now!
XOXO,

Love that box, Christy. Inspired by you, I ripped the lining out of an old (smelly) silverware box – what a job! I think you need to post a photo of you scraping away the glue that held all that velvet in place. It will be worth all my work if I end up with something as beautiful as yours. That paint sounds great, too. I’ve been priming everything because I got ugly bleed-through that almost made me give up on chalk-type paint. I look forward to seeing your projects every week and I’m betting this one is going to get snapped up quickly.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie!! Removing that old velvet lining is a chore for sure! Now you know why I choose a bold fabric for the lining of mine…it hides a multitude! For the bottom you can cut a piece of foam core or cardboard to fit, wrap it in the fabric, and hot glue it to the bottom, to eliminate the need to scrape the bottom. As for the bleed-through, unfortunately you will get that with any paint if you are painting mahogany or cherry, but you can shellac or prime first to avoid that…I cry a little inside every time I start to see that dreaded bleed-through! I’m sure your box will look gorgeous when you’re done…have fun! 😀

Very cute! Nice choice on the liner!

Thanks, Becky! 😀

What a sweet box, perfect for a desk. I too have kept cards, in fact 19 years worth of Christmas cards. I decided enough is enough and they had to finally go this year. It was fun going down memory lane. I did keep the special cards and pictures. It felt so good to lighten the load.
Christy says
Thanks, Ange! Good for you getting rid of all those cards…I need to go through mine and do the same! XO

You’ve encouraged me to make over my mother’s old silver chest and display it, instead of keeping it in a drawer, where it’s been for the last 25 years. I really like the idea of the handles. Would never have thought of that on my own. And the lining! Ooh la la! Thanks for the great inspiration.
Christy says
That’s awesome, Lori and thank you! Yes, time to bring it out of hiding! XO
Marie from The Interior Frugalista says
Don’t you just love their paint, Christy! Driftwood is one of my favorites and it looks so pretty on your mini chest makeover. Love the fabric lined interior too! Pinning and sharing 🙂
Christy says
Yes!! It goes on so smoothly! I am loving this color too…can’t wait to try it on a larger piece! Thanks, Marie! XOXO

Aww thank you, Diane!! XO

I like how you can make “Something” out of “Nothing”, Christy. Your redos always make my day. It’s like – “Why did I throw that away last week?” and, “I should have redone that before donating it to the thrift store yesterday”…but when I see what a treasure you have made, I get refocused and think that maybe I can do that, too!
Christy says
Thank you, Marjorie!! I’m so glad you enjoy what I share here…and I too have those, “Why didn’t I keep that?” moments! Of course it is always just after you’ve gotten rid of it, right? Thanks for following along with me! XO

very pretty!!! Love Love it!

Thank you, Jamie! XO

You are so creative and inspiring! I love all of your make overs. I have purchased two old silverware boxes that I have plans to refinish which I was inspired from an older post of yours. I don’t know where you find the time and energy!
Christy says
Aww thank you SO much, Kim!! There are so many possibilities with those boxes, and I actually have about four of them in my garage right now…just can’t pass them up! 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
So cute Christy! Love that idea. I have a drawer or two in my downstairs chest that I throw all cards into! I just can’t throw them away!! 🙂 xo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy!! I just can’t either lol! XOXO
Norma D says
Just curious–what price range would you put this at?
Christy says
Hi Norma, I have this priced at $32, but my shop has a pretty lofty overhead. If I were selling it at a craft market, I would price more around $26-$28. 🙂
Nancy @ Slightly Coastal says
Adorable! I love the gray and white stripes. I only keep the cards and notes that are handmade. I also snap a picture of them just in case….
Nancy
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! Taking a photo is a great idea…I really need to go through mine and only keep the special ones. 🙂
