Hi friends! Welcome back to day #2 of my March Madness Series!
I’ve got a sweet little mini shelf makeover that I’m sharing today. I found this last Summer at the thrift store for $3 whole dollars and it has long sold in my booth, but I never got a chance to share it.
Here it is as I found it:
A little homely, but I thought it could be sweet painted. It got a new beadboard backing and a fresh new paint job that gave it an entirely new feel.
This frumpy dated little mini shelf is now a coastal cutie!
It’s not frumpy anymore!
It’s amazing what a little beadboard can do.
I really loved it here in my bathroom, but only if it would stay looking just like this. My hubby would probably claim it, and who wants to see deodorant and nose-hair trimmers on display?
I used Behr’s Gray Morning which I made into chalk paint (Recipe HERE, Chalk Painting Tutorial HERE) and sanded a bit, then sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear wax.
Isn’t that little dress form cute? I found it at the thrift store with a TJ Maxx sticker on the bottom. Perfect for holding necklaces I wear most often.
My boys at the beach…I stole that picture from their bathroom.
It didn’t take much to revive this dated mini shelf at all!
I’ll be back tomorrow sharing what I did to this $10 sofa table:
UPDATE: Bam! HERE it is now!
If you missed yesterday’s makeover, you can see it HERE.

Nice shelf Christy! And so true, the beadboard really makes it! Just a silly question. Is beadboard heavy? I’ve always liked the look of it, but have never had the opportunity to pick a piece up. Thanks and look forward to the table you’ll show us tomorrow.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Joanne! There are a couple of different kinds of bead board. The kind that I used here is wood and it’s pretty thin and not heavy at all. They also make a version that I believe is press board or not wood anyway, but it is thicker and much heavier and a bit more detailed. You can also buy it in sheets or in strips that join together. 🙂
Sue says
Like I said, I will be saying this every day “Love it!!!”
Christy K. James says
Ha ha thank you, Sue! 🙂
Becky says
SO cute! Amazing! I’m laughing over your description of what your husband would do with a shelf like this… yes indeed! Mine too, haha!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Becky!! And yeah the guys just don’t get it. He doesn’t get the whole “towels for display only” in our hall bath either. 🙂
Anne @ DesignDreams says
Aqua makes everything beautiful 🙂 Great job, love the new look!
Christy K. James says
Yes it does, Anne! My favorite for sure…thank you! XO

You are so right about the bead board. It is perfect in the bathroom and it’s my favorite color too. Great job.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Jolinda! I do love this color as well…a perfect coastal blue. 🙂

Thanks, Tania! XO
Patty says
That turned out so cute, I just love your style, and that picture of your boys is so adorable.
The only problem I have with this piece is it would be perfect in my guest bath so now I have to go out and scour all the thrift shops in a fifty mile radius and try to find one like this. It would be so much easier if you would just sell me yours, haha. I’m serious!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Patty!! You are so funny…this sold a long time ago or I might actually consider it. It will give you something to hunt for…the thrill of the hunt is the best! 🙂
Mary says
Love it! I want one too!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mary! It’s perfect for organizing so many things! 🙂
Ellie says
Gorgeous shelf!! You are so clever. Christy, I could use your expertise. I chalk painted a rug, blue, white and navy. Should I seal it with something before I use it on my balcony? (It’s screened in). Thanks.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Ellie! I don’t think it’s necessary to seal the rug with anything. I’ve gotten chalk paint on plenty of clothing and it isn’t going anywhere ha ha!
Linda says
Hi…I have a question about the beautiful shelf…..it appears to be a very pretty aqua color but in your tutorial you say you used grey paint. Thanks.
Christy K. James says
Hi Linda! It is called Gray Morning, but it is actually a muted aqua color. Here is a larger project using the same color: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/antique-dresser-revival/ 🙂
MaryJean Saxton says
I am loving everything you do!! You are so creative. I want to try some furniture makeovers but not sure where to begin.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Maryjean! I paint most of my furniture pieces with chalk paint. If you like a little bit of a distressed look, here is my step by step for painting furniture using chalk paint: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ Try a small piece as a test piece to start. 🙂
Kat says
Adorable makeover. Glad I found your site through Pinterest as I just picked up a similar shelf at goodwill today! How did you attach the beadboard and do you remember about how much it cost? Thanks so much! Following your blog from now on! Xx
Christy says
Thanks, Kat! I attached the back with small nails. I think I bought a 4’x 8’panel for less than $20 at The Home Depot or Lowes that I use for all kinds of projects, but they sell smaller pieces as well. Thanks for following along! XO

Hi Christy. I wanted to complement you on your sensibilities, style and taste. You have a genuine talent for seeing possibilities. There is one tiny thing I would simply like to voice as an opinion and it is said in the kindest way possible.
Even though your work is inspiring, the photography excellent (I am a photographer and have been shooting professionally for 52 years, there is one thing that I am not fond of. That is the artificial sanding that always looks the same but more importantly looks artificial to me. It does not look aged to me, just sanded. I would rather see you find another way. Please remember I am only sharing an opinion. No criticism intended. Thank you.

Thank you for you input, Bonnie!
