I’m about to show you something embarrassing…take a look at the photo below.
That’s our lawn mower. Besides the fact that it looks like a dinosaur, what else do you notice?
See that plug just a danglin in the breeze? It’s electric! Have you ever tried mowing while dragging a power cord around the yard with you? Very embarrassing, especially because we are the second house in on a very long street, so everyone on our street drives past our house!
It used to belong to my hubby’s Grandma.
One of the perks of being a blogger is getting to try out products. I don’t do it very often, because I have a hard time talking about something that doesn’t feel authentic, and I always want to be as honest as possible.
The awesome people at Ryobi were gracious enough to send me an amazing battery-powered mower I had seen on my friend Christy’s blog, Our Southern Home. As soon as I saw it in her post, I just knew I had to have one too! (I promise the opinions of this fabulous machine are entirely my own!)
In our defense, we used to only have a small patch of grass in the front yard to cut, because the back yard was covered in rocks.
It looked like this…only covered in rocks:
We remedied that situation and completely overhauled the back yard a couple of years ago. Now it looks like this:
This is an early Summer picture. It actually looks a little more like Fall at the moment, but our grass is still growing at record speed and here it is the middle of November! So, while we should be looking forward to storing our lawn tools for the Winter, we still have maintenance for a little while longer.
Meet the machine that actually made me not mind cutting the grass at all…the Ryobi 40 Volt Brushless Mower:
This machine is so easy to operate. Simply push the start button while holding the blade control levers down. Boom! Running mower!
It is so powerful, yet so quiet and runs on Lithium-ion power. Here is the battery compartment on top:
It has room for the battery and an extra…but we only used one battery to mow the front, and back and it still had life left!
You can mulch or bag the clippings with this mower. We don’t usually use the bag, but when we have a lot of leaves or our grass is pretty tall after several days of rain, we do. The opening on this bag is nice and large. I always had to stick my hand in and pull out the old grass on my old mower. This emptied so easily!
Another great feature of this mower is the handle collapses for better storage. Just open the levers on the sides and at the base, and fold the handle down.
How nice is that?
But the BEST part of all, is I no longer have to drag a huge cord around with me while I mow! Especially around our kids’ playset:
Oh…and it now comes with a FIVE year warranty!

I’ve loved every RYOBI tool I’ve ever owned. . . but I had no idea they made lawn mowers! The idea of a battery-powered lawn mower is great. Thanks for sharing this!
Christy K. James says
I didn’t know either until I saw one on my friend’s blog. It works like a dream! 🙂
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
We don’t have a yard to mow but we’re looking to move in the next few years and I’m so bookmarking this. I even thought about going even more retro and getting one of those cylinder blade old school push mowers because we know we won’t have a big yard. But if you say this is quiet, I would be down with this bad boy!
Christy K. James says
It really is quiet, Anele! I can’t believe I’m raving about a mower, but you will not be disappointed! XO
Leslie @ House on the Way says
That looks like an awesome mower! You’re right….definitely not your grandmother’s mower!
Christy K. James says
It is awesome, Leslie! Thanks for the visit! XO
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
Nice machine! You have to have hurculean strength to start (if you catch it on a good day) and push ours. I love that it folds up so it doesn’t take up valuable real estate in the garden shed.
Christy K. James says
This is so easy to start…just a touch of a button! My fav part is the collapsible handle…our old one took up so much room too!
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Ohh I love it!!! I might even cut the grass if I had that to cut it with!! 😉 Love how it folds down too. Definitely NOT your Grandma’s mower!!!! 😉
Nancy
Christy K. James says
That’s what I said! I hated cutting the grass before, so I let my husband do it. I’ll gladly get out there and do it now! 🙂
Carolyn Price says
Good to know, Christy! Great for the environment and you don’t have to run and get gas before you finish the job!
Love your backyard!! You’re a landscaping Rock Star!! (Yes, pun intended!! or would that be … Un-Rock Star?)
Christy K. James says
Ha ha your pun made me chuckle! Yes you are so right…no need to get gas or have to store it all year either! Can you tell I was really excited about this mower? Perfect to keep my backyard tidy. Thanks for being so sweet! Enjoy the rest of your week! XOXO

What an awesome mower! I am so behind the times- I had no idea there were even battery powered mowers. (But at least we’re not using an electric mower…LOL) Love that the handle folds down too!

I have been wanting to get a new mower for a while, and this one looks really nice! I am sure that it was great to upgrade from your “grandma” lawnmower to one like this. However, right now, I am not sure if I can fit a new mower into the budget. It might be best for me to just get it repaired and put in a new mower belt, and then I can work on saving up for a mower like the one you have. Thanks for sharing these great pictures, as well as your experience!
