I have a fun little makeover to share with you today.
This shelf was purchased dusty and neglected for $5. It has a funky top shelf that I imagine held silverware at one time, but would not be very useful today:
So I wacked it out and replaced that piece with a regular shelf:
Then I gave it a wainscot backing and a coat of Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg Blue chalk paint…
I love this color.
Much better… now it’s functional again.
I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
I lined the drawers with pretty paper and added dainty little glass knobs.
A little ironstone to dress it up…
This piece was painted white, but had also been red as well as chartreuse green at one time. In some parts, you can see a tiny bit of red peeking through.
As always I’m so glad you stopped by! I hope you enjoyed this little before and after ! 🙂

Great choices of color, shelf replacement, but especially the bead board backing. Looks wonderful with the white ironstone.

Christy, years ago people used to collect spoons and they would hang them from the top shelf. My Mom used to collect them. I like what you did with the shelf. In fact I like everything you do and even though I am much, much older than you, I learn something every time you post so thank you!
Christy K. James says
What a thoughtful and sweet comment, Patty! I really appreciate your kind words. I wasn’t exactly sure what the top shelf was for, but it seemed the only possibility was silverware. Thanks for filling in those details! I’m so glad to have you following along 🙂
Marie@InteriorFrugalista says
Nice job Christy! I love the paper you choose to line the drawer and those crystal knobs are the icing on the cake. What paint color did you use?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! This is Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg blue, my favorite! I’d paint everything with it if I could 🙂
Kim says
Amazing transformation! Seriously, is there anything you can’t do? 😉 I just love the ironstone, too…very lucky find! I am pea green, my thrift stores do not have anything like that! So pretty!
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Kim! My thrift stores have been lacking a bit lately as well boo! I acquired this little beauty from a family friend. It was just sitting in her garage collecting dust and cobwebs so she offered it to me for $5. Yes, I’ll take it! I knew I could do something with it, plus I just couldn’t say no. Thanks so much for visiting! 🙂

LorieT says
Hi Christy,
Could you do a project, or elaborate more on how to incorporate breadboard backing into one of your pieces?
Christy K. James says
Hi Lorie, There was no back on this shelf to begin with, so I just cut a piece of bead board paneling to fit the back and nailed it in place with small finishing nails. If it had a back already, I would have removed it and added then bead board. You can find the bead board at Lowes in whole sheets or half sheet and they will gladly cut it to size for you. Also, paint it before you add it to your piece. Hope this helps!
