Hi friends! Welcome to thrifty makeover #16! I’ve so enjoyed spending every day here with you this month, if only I could keep it up!
Today I’m sharing a furniture makeover, and I hope you love today’s makeover as much as I do!
I found this table and chair at the Salvation Army last year and they have been buried in my garage ever since.
I spied the table almost right away and I loved it. I’m not sure why. The two chairs were nearby and looked like a good match. Furniture was half off that day, so I ended up getting all three pieces for $65! They hardly ever do that anymore it seems. I think they just had too much furniture at the time and were trying to clear some space…lucky me!
Are you ready to see what I possibly could have done with this set?
Quite a difference, right? It looked very masculine before, but not anymore!
I imagine this in an office, even though it has no drawers. It has a nice large surface to spread out on. When I started painting it and turned it on its side to paint the underside that shows, I saw that it’s labeled as a “Chart Table”. Very cool.
The French writing adds the perfect finishing touch!
I used my favorite transfer method and blockposters.com to add the graphics.
This graphic like most is from The Graphics Fairy. She has a ton of fantastic graphics that are free to download.
Here it is before I added stripes…very plain.
The base is Behr’s Cottage White (my favorite!) that I made into Chalk paint using this recipe.
The stripes were taped off using frog tape for delicate surfaces. (Regular frog tape works fine, I already had this kind.)
Then I painted them in with Annie Sloan’s Paris Grey, another favorite!
Do you love the fabric on the chairs?
Want to know my secret for finding beautiful fabric for projects such as this?
Curtain panels from Homegoods/TJ Maxx:
There are two 84″ panels here for $19.99. I could easily have covered three chair cushions with one panel.
I also added piping for a finished detail. (My sew and NO sew tutorial gives you step by step for making piping…easy!)
Here is the chair before:
And now…
My dining room table is squished into the kitchen ha ha! I really should put wheels on that poor thing as much as I drag it out of the way for pictures! I almost always use my dining room since it gets the most light.
I just love how this set turned out.
Now I have a space in my garage for something else to work on. Time to go treasure hunting! 🙂
Come back tomorrow to see what I did to this little figurine:
See ya then!
UPDATE: See how I updated this little fella HERE now!
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

I love it! I’ve been looking for a small table for adults that’s big enough to finish a large jigsaw puzzle on. That table is perfect for that! Another selling point, smile. Beautiful job.!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Terri! I love jigsaw puzzles and that is an excellent use for this table! 🙂

Another great project Christy!! Well done as are all the others. Is this going to your booth?
Celia
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Celia! We just dropped it off yesterday at my booth. I try to get my pieces out of the house fast before my son’s cars and legos find them. 🙂

Hi, Christy- I just wanted to tell you that I subscribe to several blogs, and I mean several, but yours is my absolute favorite! Especially enjoying the 31 day of make overs. In my opinion, you are the best in blog land. I can’t wait to see the 2nd half of the month! Love all of your projects so much I can’t even pick a favorite! Anyway I just thought I should tell you how much I enjoy your posts and how you show how to do it to where it makes sense. Thank you for doing such a great blog! -Kris

Kathe says
What a great ‘chart’ table – and what a great price! I can see how you couldn’t pass it up. Of course it looks better now! Question for you: I have tried this method and my black paint always seems to smudge or bleed onto the white when I sand it. Yours always looks so clean. What could I being doing wrong? TIA
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Kathe! I have had this happen too, but since then I leave the paint to dry at least overnight before sanding. I’m not sure if that’s the key, but it doesn’t seem to happen when I do. Hope this helps!
Vicki and Jennifer @ 2 Bees in a Pod says

Christy K. James says
Yay!!! I’m so glad you feel inspired. That is the best! 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
It’s beautiful Christy and I love your upholstery fabric tip. Oftentimes I see drapery panels in the clearance bins and walk right past because there may be only 1 panel. Not anymore!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I love drapery panels for dining room chairs! It’s hard to find current fabrics at the fabric store sometimes. XO
Becky says
Your decorating style is SO beautiful! I love the backgrounds of your pictures as much as the focus of the picture. Lovely work here again.
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Becky! I need to show my husband your comment so I can say, “This is why we have to move the dining room table into the kitchen for this picture!” ha ha! 🙂
Beverly says
Love your table and chairs makeover. Your colors and fabric are perfect. Great job.

Hi Christy. I’ve been following your blog for awhile now. Love it! I’m really enjoying the March Thrifty Makeovers. Are you keeping these items or putting them in your booth?
What price would the sewing cabinet side table have on it in your booth? If I lived on the east coast, I would definitely come visit!
Phyllisa
Christy K. James says
I’m so glad you are enjoying this fun series! This little cabinet is priced at $125. A little side table like this could be anywhere from $95-$145 depending on what I paid for it, how much work went into it etc. I do like things to move quickly so I try not to overprice.
Maggie M says
This is definitely one of my favorite make-overs! Love the colors, the stripes, just perfect. I wonder what this table was originally, a desk maybe? It’s pretty small for a dining table…except for two:) You’ve definitely got the “eye” Christy when it comes to finding furniture to make over.
Christy K. James says
I’m so glad you like it, Maggie! I think it’s my favorite of this series so far. The underside of the table was stamped, “Chart Table”. It was likely used as a large surface to study maps before GPS was invented. Pretty cool! 🙂
Maggie M says
P.S. How far is Virginia Beach from Central Oregon? LOL
Christy K. James says
Lol! 🙂
Ruth Anne says
Another great project! I admire your steady hand–the black graphics look so perfect on the stripes. I’ll need to practice up a bit before I try this on a real piece of furniture! Hope the set sells soon in your booth. Looking forward to tomorrow’s blog post!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Ruth Anne! I use a liner brush so it’s really thin, and watering down the paint just a bit helps it go on more smoothly. We just dropped it off yesterday…hoping for a quick sale too! 🙂
Marilyn says
So pretty! Your creative ability really leaves me shaking my head in awe. When your email arrives in the morning, it’s the first one I read, even before the New York Times!!!
Christy K. James says
Aww Marilyn!!! You sure know how to make a girl feel great! I’m thrilled that you are enjoying my thrifty adventures. 🙂
Julie (Being Home) says
Wow! I normally am not a stripe person, but the lines on this table, the colors and the fonts used are all GORGEOUS! The curtain you chose as fabric is lovely with the table. Seriously, beautiful work! 😀
I bet this will sell fast in your shop! Good luck!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Julie! I don’t normally do the stripes either, but I think it works here. So glad you like it too! (And I’m hoping for a fast sell too.) 🙂
andi says
LOVE the stripes, and the curtain usage. 🙂 I’ve been planning on doing that myself, but haven’t had the opportunity yet. 😛

Christy K. James says
I remember that beautiful dining set of yours! 🙂
Joyce @ Quilted Nest says
I’m so impressed w/ this 31 projects idea. (and I’ve been pinning several!) From the looks of them – can I assume you’ve been working on some of them ahead of time? Especially this table and chairs! (or else you’re super fast). I want to give you a little shout out on my blog. Do you mind if I borrow a photo or 3 to share to bring them on over? ~Joyce
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Joyce! I had several smaller projects that I had completed but never shared. I thought the idea to share a makeover every day for a month was a fun way to share them. I had about half of them completed before this series started. I’d be honored if your shared on your blog, thank you! 🙂
Allie says
I love this! I have a dining table I love, but it needs refinishing. I think a fun paint job like this would be way more fun.
Christy K. James says
So glad you like it, Allie! I had fun doing this one! XO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says

Christy K. James says
Aww Thanks, my friend! XOXO
Carmen says
Wonderful! I love the Parisian wording, it adds a nice touch!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Carmen! It definitely needed a little something more and that was it. XO
Wanda Rose says
Do you speak French? Can you translate all the French graphics you use? Does today’s have to do with food / restaurants? 🙂
Christy K. James says
I did take five years of French and dated a very limited English-speaking French Canadian for a couple of years, but this has absolutely nothing to do with food ha ha! It’s more like a manufacturer of medical supplies graphic, but I liked the aesthetics of it. Shhh…let’s not tell any potential buyers. 🙂
Ronja Lotte says
Your table looks fantastic! Great job 🙂
Best wishes,

This has got to be one of my favorites of your pieces and I love all of them. I’m a sucker for stripes and graphics. That’s such a good size for a lot of uses like for a small eat in kitchen, family room, or study.
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Deena! I wish I had a home office. This is the perfect size for a work table! 🙂
