We made it to day #3 yippee! Ha ha…I’m sharing a sofa table I found at a yard sale in my own neighborhood last Spring for $10. I bought it from the same lady I bought this $60 hutch from. It was solid and I knew I could do something with it eventually. Well eventually is here and I finally got around to doing something with it!
Here it is as you may have seen in the sneak peek I gave you yesterday:
I started by sanding the top with the intention of staining it and painting the legs. Only when I tried to sand the outer edge of the top, I realized it was not real wood. It appears that the legs are though…weird. So it sat in my garage while I decided what else I could do with it.
It had a pattern on the top already:
I thought I could work with that somehow.
Here’s what I came up with:
Fun? I love the color combo! This is three parts French Linen chalk paint from Annie Sloan and one part Pure White, maybe just a little more. I liked the original color but I love the lighter version. This is one color I still buy instead of making my own.
It looks so pretty against my new white slip covers. (If you missed it, I DIYed them…see more HERE!)
I’ve never had a sofa table here before and I’m thinking I just might keep this one. I’ve got an end table with almost the exact same lines that I may paint to match. (Nothing like refurnishing the house with furniture from my to-do pyramid in the garage. 🙂 )
I used FrogTape Delicate Surface Tape (affiliate link) to tape off the pattern for this table. (Didn’t need delicate, but it’s what I grabbed.)
Then I used FrogTape Multi-Surface Tape (affiliate link) for the pattern because it was narrower. I taped off the right side first, and painted in my pattern with two coats of Pure White chalk paint.
Then I removed the tape, including the center piece and did the left side the same way, using the pattern in the surface as my guide. If you want to create the same look but don’t have the grain in the furniture to guide you like I did, here’s how:
- Tape the outer border edge of where you want your pattern to stop.
- Find the center of the surface (depth-wise) and tape off on one side of the center as shown in the first in-progress photo.
- Use a square or something that is perfectly square to trace around to create the “triangle” in the center of the pattern. Tape it off, then use the width of the tape as a guide to tape off your pattern from there. (Add a piece of tape, then butt another piece right next to it. Add the next piece right next to that. Then remove the previous piece and use it as a guide for the next “Stripe”.)
- Paint two coats and remove the tape right away.
- Repeat on the other side, making sure the pattern matches up with the first side.
- Clear as mud? 😉

Morning Christy! I like how you were able to use the existing pattern on the table top to do the chevron stripes. The table is beautiful and I wouldn’t blame you a bit if you decided to keep it. One day I would like a sofa table too. I find them to be lovely. You brought a chuckle to my lips with your comment about decorating your home with your pyramid of items in your garage! I also wanted to tell you that I loved the photo of your boys in yesterday’s post. You see I have five grown sons and we have pictures like yours and they bring back so many precious memories. Thanks for sharing!
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Joanne! My to-do pyramid is slowly dwindling…just in time for yard sale season! I love being a boy Mom. I couldn’t imagine having a girl now, although I’m not sure how you did it with five boys! Kudos to you! 🙂

I redid a sofa table exactly like that one a few years ago – I like what you did with yours much better. Pinning to share. Have a great weekend Christy! xo
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! It was pretty dated to me before, so I was pleasantly surprised that the paint updated it so nicely. Thanks for pinning, my friend!!
Tori says
I have a sofa table just like that in my closet area, but it’s stained a dark brown. I love the dimensions of the table, but not the look. I’ve been thinking about re-doing it for a while. Your’s turned out so well! I’m going to have to give mine a makeover this Spring!
Christy K. James says
This thing sat in my garage forever waiting for inspiration to strike. It wasn’t until I painted it that I saw the pattern in the top and that’s what gave me the idea for the pattern. Love when that happens. 🙂
Kim says
I have to locate a table like this at a thrift shop or garage sale!! It’s exactly what I am looking for!
Christy K. James says
It’s funny I was not interested in this table at all until I painted it! Now it’s staying put. 🙂
Nancy says
