Who wants to make a shell wreath??
Hi Friends! Is there anyone out there that doesn’t love high-end décor? I love thumbing through all those decorator magazines, as I’m sure most of us do, but do you know what I love even more? Getting the high-end look for a fraction of the cost by creating it myself!
It’s totally okay if you don’t feel like you inherited the creative genes in your family. Find something in one of those magazines that inspires you and create your own version.
Today, I’m sharing what I created for my front door for Summer.
I was inspired by this shell wreath by Pottery Barn:
This wreath has been around for awhile, and I have always wanted to make one similar for my front door.
Here’s my take on this pretty shell wreath:
Mine is a little different, but I’m pleased with how it turned out. It wasn’t hard to make at all!
How to make a shell wreath
Here’s what I used to pull this wreath together:
- Various shells/pencil starfish
- Sand dollars
- sea glass
- grapevine wreath
- light gray paint
- paint brush
- hot glue gun/glue
Instead of using a burlap ribbon to hang my wreath, I decided to add texture with a little fish net I found at Michaels:
I started by dry brushing the wreath with this sample pot of Light French Gray paint by Behr (in flat) to give it more of a driftwood vibe:
Then I added the fish net with hot glue:
Next, I started adding my sand dollars. I didn’t use as many on mine as were in the inspiration wreath because they were a bit pricey at $2 a piece. I already had the pencil starfish on hand, so I decided to use more of those instead.
I live in a Beach town, so I was easily able to find the sand dollars loose at a local shop, but I did see them at Hobby Lobby as well.
The starfish are also available at Hobby Lobby and Michaels.
I continued to arrange and glue everything in place. I found a good sized bag of the scallop shells at TJ Maxx for $8.
To add a fun finishing touch, I added a few pieces of sea glass. This bag of sea glass was at the bottom of a box of shells I bought at a yard sale for $2. What a nice surprise when I found it after I got home!
I love adding beachy elements to my décor in the Summer!
I’m pretty darned happy at how this turned out! Thanks to Pottery Barn for the inspiration!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Shanna Gilbert says
I like yours so much better! The original was too busy. I wish I could have all of this pretty nautical decor like your girls but it would be pretty out of place in Kansas!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Shanna! Maybe you could start a new trend! I never even thought about that. We’ve always had a lot of beachy décor in the stores around here, so I always end up with several beachy things in my house! 🙂
Tami @ Curb Alert! says
I agree with Beth, lovin’ your wreath way better. I think the netting is the perfect touch! Just in time for summer!!!

I prefer your wreath to theirs! It looks fantastic and I’ll bet it looks amazing on your front door! Pinning!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Julie! It looks great, but my door is stained and I do prefer it against a white background. I don’t think I could convince the hubby that we need to paint our door to match my wreath though…darn! lol!
Vickie says
Yours is better! The fishing net makes it rock!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Vickie! I’m very pleased with how it turned out. 🙂

Wow, Christy, this is absolutely beautiful and I like yours MUCH better than the original.
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Mary Beth! XO
Betty says
I like yours much better. It allows some negative space and their shells are too uniform. The netting adds just the right touch.
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Betty! I am really enjoying this on my front door this year. 🙂
