Reclaimed. You can call fence pickets that you rescued from the trash, reclaimed right? Remember Mr. House Flipper who I weaseled those old fence pickets from? Those pickets are excited to be a part of March Madness! Today is day #22!!
One of those fence pickets, AKA reclaimed wood pieces, are joining forces with this sweet picture and frame for today’s makeover:
Add a little paint and some handles. and it’s a fun reclaimed wood tray!
This frame started out at $6.98, but had been marked down to $1.98. With the free fence pickets, that makes this tray less than $2! You can see the fence pickets better here:
I love this combination! It has a very coastal feel.
To make this, I painted the frame first in Cottage White chalk paint (using my go-to recipe). I also cut the fence picket to size using my table saw.
I painted the wood pieces with Cottage white also, then used a rag to wipe most of it off. I thought I was done with the frame at the Cottage White stage, so I added my fence picket pieces using tiny nails, hammered in at a slight angle:
Then I added these felt discs to protect furniture from the rough underside of the fencing.
But then I decided to go a step further and add a coat of Duck Egg Blue chalk paint by Annie Sloan.
I gave it a little sanding with 220 grit sand paper and sealed it all with a coat of wax.
The addition of the blue was just what it needed. I did the same thing to these old handles that came off of an old thrift store project.
The paint really brings out the details in the frame also.
My hubby kept walking into the shot. I have about five pictures with this blue blur in it.
You can always use a tray. They are one of my favorite things to decorate with!
Tomorrow I’ll be back to share my Parent’s bedroom set. Yesterday I told you to think Oak, 1985. Keep thinking that. 🙂

That is really cute. The color absolutely brings out the details in the frame. Idk what I’m going to do when these 31 days are over, you have been actually helping me get up on time in the mornings so I can see what each day brings…maybe you should do 6 months of fabulous;) lol
Christy K. James says
Ha ha glad I could be your motivation to get up and get going each morning! Six months just might do me in. I’ll definitely be doing this again though, and maybe I won’t wait till next March to do it. 🙂
Kimm At Reinvented says
Gorgeous! Love the detail on the frame and the rustic nature of the wood together. AND you can’t go wrong with Duck Egg Blue! 😉
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Kimm! I do love this combination as well. 🙂
Katie @ Little House of Four says
Such a brilliant idea! You never would have guessed it was made from an old picture. Love it!

Thanks, Katie! I loved the detail on the frame of it, glad I snapped it up. 🙂

Again, I have to say score!!! You choose pieces I would walk right by. Love it too
Sigh…..
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mary! This was a lucky find. Don’t worry, several people had walked right by this as it was on it’s 3rd markdown by the time I came along!

I like that tray and I want to try to make one myself. It would be so useful and I already have an old frame and some scrap pieces of wood.
Christy K. James says
Great, Mary! You already have all you need to get started! 🙂
Lei says
Genius! It’s amazing the transformations you come up with. I look forward to your postings, yours is my favorite site.
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Lei! That makes my day! That’s also the reason I enjoy sharing my projects so much! 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
Really enjoying this series Christy. Love your rustic tray with a pretty blue wash and the handles are a perfect style for this piece too.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I was thrilled the handles worked out because they were really ugly and I almost tossed them!
Julie (Being Home) says
I really love how your mind works! 🙂 The tray is a beautiful shade of blue and the rustic wood bottom really adds to the look. Seriously, I wish I could have a thrift store shopping day with some of my favorite bloggers! I know I would learn so much! 😀
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Julie! The only thing about thrifting with blogging friends is we’d be fighting over stuff lol! People would be looking at us like we were nuts for fighting over some ugly brown table ha ha! 🙂
Rose says
Love what you do, it has motivated me to do things. Thank you!!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Rose! I love to hear that you are feeling motivated! 🙂
Paula says
Love this! One question. Putting the reclaimed wood on the frame with tiny nails does not seam very sturdy. Did you use wood glue or anything else so it won’t seperate?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Paula! I put them in at an angle which helps, but also this little tray is more decorative than functional. You certainly could add wood glue though if you like.
Janner says
Do you mark your pieces “decorative use only,” or anything? I’d probably try to use it, as you displayed it, with plates and silverware. (Maybe I’m just naive.)
Christy K. James says
This is perfectly functional, so there’s no need to add that disclaimer, although I think most people would probably use it decoratively.
Cindy@DIYbeautify says
WOW…absolutely stunning makeover Christy! I totally want one!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Cindy! I don’t want to sell this one now lol!
Linda Johnston says
I don’t even know which make over is my favorite so far. However, this one is amazing. I have to go look for any old frame. I have everything else. Thanks!
Christy K. James says
I’m so glad you are enjoying these makeovers, Linda! This was a favorite of mine so far too. Good luck finding your frame! XO
Becky says
I’m going to have to keep my eyes open for a nice deep frame. This is beautiful!

Judy H. says
What a beautiful tray!! I was just thinking what the price tag would be on that at a market or show and it would be a healthy one. You created an absolutely perfectly gorgeous showpiece! I just can’t seem to get past my “oh, it won’t turn out right” stage. I am clumsy with power tools and when painting, I never know if I’ve sanded too much or not enough. Did you go through a period like that when you started to create and design? Your work looks like you just picked it up one day and did it perfectly!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Judy! I am usually working with items that have little life left in them and aren’t in the best condition, or they are very outdated, so there really is no fear of messing them up. And don’t look at it as sanding too much or too little, just sand until you like the way it looks. Only you have to like it, so just do what you like and what looks good to you. Now go paint something and make yourself proud! 🙂
Cricket says
YOU have definitely taken March Madness to another level!!! I have been so impressed and inspired by so many of your projects, I couldn’t possibly choose which one is my favorite. And boy did you hit the bargains!! I think I am shopping in the wrong places..
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Cricket! I was really hoping this thrifty series would be a fun way to connect with my readers, and I have to say it has surpassed any hopes I originally had! I have loved connecting with you guys over these fun makeovers! XO

Hi Christy … Love how your repurposed the frame. So useful and pretty. Those old heavy frames are perfect tor this. Good job.

Christy K. James says
Thanks, Audrey! You’re right, these old frames are ideal for trays! XO
Janner says
All of the March Madness posts have been fantastic! My projects had stalled for various reasons, and you’ve re-energized me. Stalled project #1 Headboard bench. I constructed it and painted but needed a second coat. Rainy season forced me indoors with no place to paint. Bench cushion was stalled by broken sewing machine. This past weekend, you inspired me to finish painting the bench! Sewing machine is another issue… Project #2: Dartboard table. Had promised to make a side table for a friend’s family room. Found dartboard, had mid-century modern legs from garage sale. Could not bring myself to mess with the epoxy coating for the table top. You inspired me to press forward, and it’s done! Thanks again..
Christy K. James says
That is THE best compliment ever!! I love that I inspired you to tackle those unfinished projects!! That’s awesome! XOXO
