Hey there amazing Friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! It’s no secret I love this day… for one, because I get to share a trashy makeover, but also because I get to do it with some of my best blogging buddies! They are sharing makeovers today as well, so be sure to look for those links at the bottom.
Today’s project really was trash, my neighbor’s trash to be exact.
I was on my way to the bus stop with my youngest when I spied this:
My neighbor did tell me she had a rocker on her back deck that she was getting rid of if I wanted to take it and fix it, but when I checked it out, I decided to pass since it wasn’t in the best shape. Then I spied that back piece sticking out of her trash can, and I knew immediately what I could do with it. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
Here is what that piece looked like before:
Do you see what I see?
Perfect for a wall shelf don’t you think? My hubby saw it in the garage before I did anything with it and said he knew I would get that thing out of that trash can, AND take a picture of it in the can. He knows me so well. 🙂
It’s super cute though, right?
This is made up of several different pieces.
I started by cutting the chair with my sliding miter saw I got for Christmas, which I love!
Then I went searching for a shelf to add to the top, and remembered I had this shelf that I had used the brackets off of a while ago for another project:
It was the perfect size. I spray painted it black (so when I painted and sanded to distress, all the parts would show black through the white paint.)
I attached it to the chair back by drilling very shallow holes on either side on the top where I planned to attach it…
That way I could sink my screws a bit and fill in the holes with wood filler.
I also glued the slats to the shelf with wood glue…
Then I sanded the chair part (220 grit) to remove any loose paint.
I knew I wanted to add hooks to the bottom to hang things, and I found this hanging rack that I bought a month or so ago:
A couple of the balls were missing on the ends of the hooks, but even at $5 I knew I could use those hooks and possibly the oval tags on something else. (I actually bought the shelf above just for the brackets.)
They worked out perfectly!
I painted them with chalk paint then scratched where I wanted the paint to come off. I sealed with clear wax.
I was also able to use the little oval tags, but I decided I wanted to add numbers instead, so I painted them with chalk paint as well…
Then I used my Silhouette to make “stencils” for the numbers:
I used black acrylic paint and a small brush to fill them in, then sealed with this matte acrylic sealer.
This would be perfect in a bathroom for holding towels, but also in an entryway for holding coats.
Don’t run off just yet! My friends have trashy makeovers of their own to share with you today!
Visit the afters at the links below the image!
(Bless’er House is taking a short “in -the-process-of-moving” break and will hopefully be joining us again soon!)
If you liked what I did with this, you’ll like what I did with these random parts too!
And I’ll be back on Thursday with my Décor Enthusiast Girls sharing a project I made with this window:
UPDATE! Check out what I created with this window HERE now!
See y’all then! 🙂
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

Christy, I confess I wouldn’t have seen that with the chair back. I am totally amazed and inspired. That wall shelf is so fun, creative, pretty and unique. Hey!! Just like you! :)))
Love the white paint and the slightly distressing. I’ll never look at a chair the same way. 🙂
Christy says
I’m glad I can still surprise you ha ha. Thank you, Christina!! XOXO

You are my sister separated at birth! hahaha…! You rocked this trashy project, Christy. Love the new look and how genius it was to make use of cast-offs. Bravo!
Christy says
Ha ha yep I think so! 🙂 Thanks, Larissa!! XOXO
Jody says
Love it! So pretty in white. I made one I saw last year but am not happy with it. I will be watching for chair or the back of one.
Christy says
Thank you, Jody! Hope you find a chair that works better! 🙂
Wendy says
Awesome build Christy. I wish I lived in your neck of the woods. On another note, I finally ordered a Painting Booth/tent (the smaller table top version) and it works beautifully!!! Thanks for sharing that a few months ago. I can now spray lacquer or air brush etc in my wood turning/woodworking room with no over spray. Where I live up in Canada, painting in the garage is not an option when it is winter. This really helps. I am glad I found this on your blog. Actually it reminds me of my Photo Tent. LOL
Christy says
Thanks, Wendy! I love my spray shelters…and that smaller one is so easy to set up! 🙂
Nancy @ Slightly Coastal says
Amazing! When I saw the before in my inbox, I knew you would do something awesome with it. This is so creative! Inspiring.
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! I knew I had to get it out of that trash can the minute I saw it ha ha! XOXO
Marie|The Interior Frugalista says
Oh my goodness, I chuckled when I saw that thang sticking out of the trash can. Wowzers, has your neighbor seen what you did with it? She’s going to be a quick sale in your booth I’m sure – so fabulous!
Christy says
Ha ha Thanks, Marie! She hasn’t seen it yet, but I bet she’ll want it back lol! XOXO
Amy says
This is one of your best ever! I never would have thought that piece of garbage could look soooo good! Love the shelf, the hooks, the numbers EVERYTHIING!!! Great work!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Amy! I took several things to my booth today, but couldn’t bring myself to take this shelf ha ha. Might have to keep this one! 🙂 XOXO
Ange says
Yes, super cute! Again-you are amazing!
Christy says
Aww thank you SO much, Ange!! XOXO
Sherry Stuifbergen says
Wow. I “studied” the broken piece a long time before I scrolled down to see what you “saw” in the chair back. What an EYE! You are so good, girl! You will be able to sell this really quickly because it looks SO GOOD! Wish you were MY neighbor. I would come over for a “jolt of ambition” to watch what you were doing, then go home and tackle things. You are like a “cup of caffeine!” (Do you remember the Dolly Parton song, “9 to 5?” The song mentions “cup of ambition”…which is what YOU are! I sure couldn’t see anything in that chair back!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Sherry! Ha ha you are SO sweet!!! I took several things to my booth today, but couldn’t bring myself to take this shelf…think I might need to keep this one. 🙂 XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
I love that you took a picture of it sticking out of the trash!!! lol Great save Christy! Love what you turned it into. 🙂 xo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy!! Ha ha Brian asked me if I tool a pic of it in the trash can, and when I said yes, he said he knew I would. I’m so grateful he doesn’t care if I keep the neighbor’s trash lol!!
Debbie in TX says
You blow me away, girl! Your vision and creativeness are extraordinary. This is such a beautiful piece. A job very well done.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Debbie!!! I’m so glad you like it! XOXO
Carol S says
Great vision, Christy! My front porch rockers rotted from the weather and I “temporarily” screwed them (minus the rocker parts) to my back fence while waiting for inspiration. This is it! Thanks so much!
Christy says
Thank you, Carol! Yes…make shelves! You would have kicked yourself if you had thrown them away….good thing you saved them! 🙂
Mrs. K @ Mrs Kringle's Kitchen says
You are so creative!! I never would’ve seen this from the original piece! Did you show your neighbor what you did with it? (I hope I didn’t miss that part if you did and I just haven’t fully woken up yet!)
Christy says
Thank you, Mrs. K! My neighbor hasn’t seen the end result, but I bet she’d want it back now! 😀

Love what you did with the chair, or part of it, is better said. So many times I will see something like this, and my mind starts to get in gear, and it’s awesome what you came up with. I just love your projects. I have to work a lot so am not able to keep up with all your beautiful ideas. I’m going to make more of an effort. Thanks so much for a great start to my day!
Christy says
Thank you, Joanne! It feels good to get creative, I agree. I think we could all use a few more (non-working) hours in the day! XOXO
Carol Whewell says
Perfect, I love it!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Carol!! XO
Janice says
Love the back of the rocker made into a shelf. When you asked if we saw what you saw, I thought you would make some kind of plate rack to hang on the wall. No at all disappointed.
Christy says
Thanks, Janice! I bet this would have made an awesome plate rack! I love that idea! XOXO
Shirley says
Wow!!! Now that is an awesome repurpose!! Love it……
Christy says
Thank you so much, Shirley! XO
vicki says
So Cute, so creative!! I love everything you create!!! I have a couple of questions that you have probably already answered in a previous post but… (1) how are you able to get such perfect stenciling without getting paint under the stencil and making a mess? and (2) how do you clean up your stencil after using it?? I am having a terrible time getting the paint and the craft bond off without destroying the stencil !! Help!!! Thanks!
Vicki
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki!! I use Loctite spray adhesive which is a huge help. I use a small brush to paint in my stencil, trying to brush away from the edges as much as possible. I do still get spots here and there that get under the stencil from time to time. I use a liner brush and a little bit of paint to fix those spots. I immediately run the stencil under warm water to remove the paint. An old wash rag works great. Then I leave it to dry with the sticky side up. I don’t bother trying to remove the sticky residue, and just add more when I’m ready to use the stencil again. For this project I used my silhouette to cut a “stencil” from contact paper. I rarely have issues with the paint getting under the contact paper. Hope this helps! XO
Michelle says
Hi Christy! I am fascinated with all of your creations!! I LOVE them all, I decided to try out my first project in your honor and after I got it home, I realized it’s basically plastic. I was wondering if you could recommend something for painting it? It’s a photo frame that has metal hinges and a lock, I don’t see anything on your site that is plastic, if you want – I could email you a photo, I’m sorry for asking you for help but I know you’re the expert!!! Who else would I ask!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Michelle! I have painted plastic before…chalk paint works fantastically on plastic! XO
Michelle says
Oh ok! I have only seen wood, I must not be looking hard enough! Thanks so much for letting me know, I’ll look up your recipe for chalk paint and get working! Thanks so much and you are so amazing!!
Christy says
Yes…it works great on plastic too! Thank you!!! 🙂
Marcie Lovett says
No, I don’t see what you see. Although I wish I did. What an amazing project from a true piece of trash! Did you salvage the rockers while you were at it? I can just imagine what you’d do with those.
Christy says
Ha ha thanks, Marcie! No I didn’t grab the rockers…that would have required really digging and I have to draw the line somewhere lol! (Kinda wish I had though!) XOXO
Michelle says
I love this! Adding the numbers is a nice finishing touch and really sets it off! 🙂
