Hey there Sweet Friends!
Well I am glad to say that I survived another annual neighborhood yard sale! Yard sales sure are a lot of work, but if you prepare well, the payoff is worth it. And we really lucked out in the weather department. It was pouring all day on Friday, but the skies cleared overnight and we had a mostly sunny day until around three when the clouds came rolling back in with a few showers. That was perfect timing!
Today is not just any ordinary Tuesday, it’s Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday woohoo! Not only will I be sharing a fun trashy makeover, so will five of my favorite treasure-maker friends! I am always excited to see what they’ve made over. Be sure to look for their links at the bottom.
I had been on the lookout for something to make over for today, and while I was pricing my yard sale goodies for this past weekend’s annual yard sale, I came across these frames I picked up forever ago:
This photo makes them look in way better shape than they really were. The prints inside were water damaged when I bought them, but I loved the curved details of the frames and had planned to turn them into trays. They ended up being a tad small to use as trays. As I was getting ready to price them for the yard sale, I thought of another idea for them.
How about a fun cupcake stand?
Cute, eh?
As soon as the idea came to me, I went digging through a bin of odds and ends and found these:
I decided they would be perfect for creating my tiers. The wooden candlestick is in the middle updside-down:
And I added the top finial piece after. It came off of an old bird house that I tossed years ago. Glad I saved it!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
To make this stand, I first removed what was in the frames and gave them a good cleaning. Then I cut two pieces of beadboard from scraps for the bottoms of the “tiers” using my sliding compound miter saw:
Then I lined everything up in my Homeright Mini Spray Shelter and gave them a coat of spray primer:
Followed by a couple of coats of Krylon Aqua spray paint:
This tent is so handy, especially on windy days. It was especially windy the day I was painting these, so my water jugs came in handy as well!
I added the beadboard to the frames using my Logan Point Driver:
I covered the wood bottoms and points with some fun paper I had from HomeGoods, using Matte Mod Podge and a chip brush:
Then I assembled my stand. I was able to screw the smaller candlestick to the bottom tier from the bottom, and the top from the topside. ( I predrilled holes for both first.)
Then I used E6000 Glue to attach the larger candlestick as the base. For the finial piece on top, I used a drill bit slightly larger than the screw I had used to attach the middle candlestick, to drill a shallow hole so the finial would sit flat over the screwhead:
I secured that with E6000 glue also, and let the stand sit for a couple of days so the glue could dry thoroughly.
I really love the curvy parts now…
And of course who doesn’t love a project that requires making cupcakes??
Brennan was more than happy to help!
And for those of you that struggle to frost your cupcakes like I did for years, this idea was a game changer:
That’s just a cheap plastic frosting tip in a gallon sized resealable bag that I cut the corner off of.
I just load the frosting in the bag and squeeze it right on the cupcake starting from the outside and working my way in.
SO much easier!
I love how this little stand turned out. I had a wire cupcake stand that recently broke, so this was perfect. It holds twenty cupcakes.
The beadboard worked out perfectly for the bottoms of the tiers, and always adds instant charm to a project…
And even the underside is pretty:
Just in case anyone drops a quarter while standing next to your cupcakes. 🙂
Be sure to keep the pieces that go in between the layers aligned perfectly so it looks like one piece that goes through the tiers. (I measured just in case.)
I was so happy to finally be able to use that pretty large candle holder I used on the bottom. That’s another piece I’ve had hanging around for a while.
I decided not to distress this one. It looked so pretty as is that I didn’t mess with it.
This would also be pretty and functional in the bathroom to hold makeup and toiletries.
Now that you’ve seen my new cupcake stand from every angle possible, as promised, my friends have some makeovers of their own!
Click the links below the image to see the afters!
Now I’m off to see what my friends did with their pieces!
I’ll be back on Thursday with my Décor Enthusiast girls. This month’s theme is anything related to the outdoors so I’ll be sharing some of my outdoor space:

Love the looks of them picture frames and how you repurposed them. Cupcake stand is Gorgeous and them cupcakes…..They look delicious.
Now, I have to go see what I have for old picture frames. I have this weakness for cake stands. Really don’t need another cake stand; not with 25already and hubby says that I have more than enough. The DIY cake stands make for great gifts; especially with some homemade goodies to go along with.
Love your inspiration ideas. Thank You
Christy says
Thank you, Colleen! Wow 25?? There is something beautiful about cake stands though so I totally get it! And love the idea to give one as a gift with baked goodies! XOXO
Joanne Taggart says
Lovely Christy! I just love the cupcake stand. It’s always a pleasure looking at your details, like the decorative paper modgepodged on the bottom. Can I ask you, do you have a lot of little pieces of whatever that you save because you know one day they will work really well with something? I know I do and sometimes I forget what I have. And sometimes I get a little frustrated as to where to keep it all. Thank you so much for the wonderful post.
Christy says
Thanks, Joanne! I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. I do save anything that I think I may be able to use again. I keep all those pieces in a couple of clear bins in the garage so I can find them again! 🙂
Sue says
Love the cupcake stand!!! I think I will try to make one for myself.
Christy says

What a darling idea! The polka dot paper looks great with that pretty mint color. I love seeing how you use odds and ends to make something useful and decorative.

Kathy says
I LOVE IT!!!! You have such an eye for things. I’m going to dig my frames out and see if I can make one. I’m sure it won’t as beautiful as yours.

Marcie Lovett says
No. Way. You truly are genius, Christy! I’m in awe of what you did with the frames and I love how this turned out. Now, will you be able to put it in the shop or will you hold on to it?
You almost have me convinced – I’m seriously considering getting a circular saw. Maybe I should borrow one first….
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Marcie, you are the sweetest! I was in need of a cupcake stand since my old one broke, so I’m thinking about keeping it…we shall see! This is probably my favorite saw so far. It’s a sliding miter saw, so it chops and then you can slide it to cut up to a foot or so! XOXO
Janice says
Love everything about the cupcake stand (including the cupcakes–they look so delicious). The color is gorgeous and think you made the right decision by not distressing this one although I do love the distressed look. Love all the Trash to Treasures but of course you are always my favorite. Can’t wait until Thursday.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janice! I’m so glad you like it. The cupcakes were totally delicious! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says

Sherry Stuifbergen says
Bet you are the “envy” of the neighborhood!…efficient and creative, house looks spic and span and beautiful, with touches that look expensive but you made them yourself! (soooo creative!) Another great idea with the frames…to even the matching aqua cup cake papers! (Will try the cupcake icer idea!) Those frames are at least from the ’40’s. My mom had a pair. They look wonderful in this new repurposed life! A wonderful blogger!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sherry! I certainly appreciate that! We definitely try to keep things budget friendly around here, and why not when you can make things super cute for a fraction of the cost, right? I figured the frames had a little age to them. I hated to sell them at my yard sale, so I’m glad I found a use for them! XOXO
Debbie says
Those are soooo gorgeous! I am in love with the colour! And those cupcakes… Mmmm. Makes me want to go make one right now so I will have to make some cupcakes!! Always excited to see what you have done each week! I am so new to this DIY blogging that I haven’t started collecting odds and ends to use on things yet, but I am definitely going to start now! My husband will be so happy!! 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie! I love that color too, and have used it on a few things. So fun for summer! Tell your hubby I’m sorry for encouraging you to hoard lol! You can blame me! ????
Marie|The Interior Frugalista says
Love love love this clever idea and the color is so pretty! What a perfect repurpose for that base, it makes such a statement on this cupcake stand. Good thing you were inspired before adding the price tags on these!
Christy says
Thank you, Marie! I don’t usually use Krylon, but I do love this aqua. And yes I was so excited to finally be able to use that candle holder in a project. I always thought it was so pretty! XOXO
Mary - the boondocks blog says

Love it Christy! So pretty and functional. You come up with the best ideas 🙂
Christy says
Aww, thank you Annie!! 😀
Aj says
This is totally adorable!!! Did you use any kind of topcoat on this piece? I’ve read it twice, hope I didn’t miss it.
Christy says
Thank you, Aj! I have found that with spray paint projects, I don’t really need to use a topcoat. It is really durable. ????
Patti says
You are so smart and talented! This in a great idea and I just might have to borrow it!
Christy says
Thank you, Patti! I hope you do make one! 😀
BettylLou says
I thought the top finial was a pawn from a chess game. This is so cute and practical I am sure I have everything I need to make my own in the garage if I could just find it all.
Christy says
Oh it does look like a pawn! So glad you like it, BettyLou…good luck tracking down the parts. 🙂

Ok, didn’t see that one coming. Love the way your mind works!! What a truly innovative and practical use of the frames. The stand is so pretty, I would put a bunch of beachy items on it for display.
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! I love that idea!! XO
Julie Briones says
You are amazing, girl! Have you even taken three descending (ascending) sizes of frames and made a large tiered tray… large enough to use as a side table? I’m thinking I need to do this!!!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Julie! I have not, but I think you need to do it! XOXO
PrettyPotato says

Oooooooh this is so pretty! I love tiered stands… like, LOVE them. I have a massive collection, but there’s always room for 3 or 4 more! Great choice with those frames! And remind me, should we ever meet, to be sure to “drop a quarter” and catch some details, haha! You’re so funny! This one looks like a keeper to me! : )
Christy says
Thanks, Becky!! I think you need to make one to add to your collection! And yes, I think this one is a keeper! XOXO
JaneEllen says
How clever you are, absolutely love this. Hope I can find couple frames similar so I can make one of these. So pretty and love aqua color, my kind of color. Will go looking thru my “just in case” stuff to see if I might have something like your bottom/base piece, sets it off beautifully. Love things that are different, so great. Have to print this out for when can find what I need to make it.
Happy Mothers’ Day
Christy says
Thank you, JaneEllen! I’m a sucker for aqua too! Enjoy making one for yourself! XO
