I am so excited to reveal my BLUE project!!
What? What am I talking about?! I’m only talking about the BEST link party project ever! Okay, really I mean the BEST link party ever…mine! Or I should say, OURS!
This isn’t your run of the mill link party, folks! This is only here for a limited time. Starting this Sunday, September 8th at 7pm EST through December 22nd, we’ll be hosting our Get our DIY on, a Sixteen Week Fall Party Challenge! Every week has a different theme! I’m teaming up with four amazing gals, so your project will be seen on FIVE blogs!
You can see all the details here or just click the info link tab at the top left.
I know I sound really shouty and excited, y’all because I am!!! I really hope you bloggers out there will come join us…a themed party is SO much fun! Non-bloggers, you know I love you too, so you better show up and cheer us on! It’s YOU I am thinking about with every word I write 🙂
Ok, enough jibber jabber, let’s check out what you came to see!
I acquired this little foot stool from my sister’s late grandmother-in-law, Omi.
You can read more about this special lady and her sewing box I redid here.
The fabric sample was one of several I found at a yard sale for $3 from this fantastic gal, Bonnie who just happens to dabble in interior design, talk about a dream yard sale!! This fabric square is quite large and it is GORGEOUS! It’s velvety soft and just a beautiful piece of fabric. I knew it was the perfect match for this special little stool.
I didn’t want to destroy the needle point. I try to be respectful of other’s hard work and I know this piece was very time-consuming. Instead, I decided to cover it. I made a sort of permanent slip cover. Here’s what I did…
I centered my fabric across the stool (right side out). Then I pinned each corner like this:
I sewed all four corners and turned my cover right side out, then trimmed away any excess fabric:
Next, I turned the hem under until it stopped where I wanted it to:
I then added upholstery tacks around the bottom to secure it in place and finish it off.
Tada:
Oh so cute, now! As you can see I painted the legs before I started, of course. This is Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg blue chalk paint, my favorite color. I also topped it off with a coat of her clear wax. It gives it a beautiful sheen and really enriches the color.
I love the old dull green paint peeking through.
Can you tell how luxurious this fabric feels from the photo? It’s velvety soft!
My boys love it…my musician…he seriously has a guitar in his hands at all times! He just turned three in July, isn’t he a big boy?
And of course my big sweetie pie had to get a pose in. He just started middle school!
He looks like a giant sitting on this stool.
This was really simple to do with minimal sewing. You could apply this concept to just about any sized stool.
I found the upholstery tacks at Hobby Lobby in the fabric section. I think they were $1.99 for a pack of 50.
My out of pocket for this little makeover was $5, not including the paint I already had on hand. Not too shabby, eh?
So this is my blue project! You wanna see what my beautiful co-hosts came up with?

Christy your transformation is amazing- you do so good with the tacks. I need to try some of those 🙂
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mandy! For my desk chair, I reused the original heavy duty brass tacks and there was a lot of cursing involved! These were much easier to use. 🙂
April Hoff says
Loooove this stool! Great “blue” project, Christy! 🙂 (And your kiddos are adorable!)
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, April! Have a great Friday! 🙂
Krista @ the happy housie says
It turned out so amazingly Christy – you are so talented!! And your little/big boys are both so adorable – can’t believe your little guy is only three – it must be that he looks so big on that mini footstool:) My little one turns three at the end of this month! LOVE your collage – made it much easier to read! Great idea: )
Christy K. James says
Thanks, sweet friend 🙂 Yes my little one is a big boy…he was in the 90th percentile at our last well check! Yours is adorable, too! Yes lol, love the collage idea too…I think it helps keep it a bit shorter. Have a great Friday! XO

I love blue, so this one really caught my eye!! Yes, I could almost reach out and touch the softness of that beautiful fabric! Great job! I’ve had a few projects that I wanted to use upholstery tacks on and I think I’ll give it a try now…Thanks! Also, thank you for welcoming us non-bloggers to your upcoming theme party and your little men are adorable!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much for your very sweet comments, June! The upholstery tacks weren’t too difficult at all..I just hammered them in place. And of course, I’d love for you to come check out our party. Hopefully there will be lots of inspiring projects to see linked up! 🙂

That fabric you used to make the “permanent” slipcover for the little footstool is just fabulous, what a find! And I am SO happy that you did not destroy that beautiful needlepoint. I have no talent in either direction (needlepoint or reupholstering, even thinking about doing either gives me hives) and you are so right, a lot of work and love went into that piece. Do you know that on Antiques Roadshow I have seen 250 year old cross-stich samplers that school girls used to do to learn the fine art of needlework back in Colonial Times and they go for thousands of dollars if they are in good condition! Just think, maybe if you pass that needlepoint piece down through your family for a few hundred years it might be worth some $$$$ some day. Well, ya never know! LOL! Maybe you could remove the needlepoint and put it in a safe place? Maybe framed with special acid-free matting and glare reducing glass with a cushion so the glass doesn’t touch the needlework and display it on an inner wall in your home? I am not a parent, I do not have any childrens, young or otherwise, but I have lots of nieces and nephews and they are always spilling stuff all over the place. That’s my only concern – what happens if there’s an oopsy and soda pop goes all over the footstool, or chocolate milk? Yikes! Hope that didn’t sound too bossy or pushy.
Christy K. James says
That’s a great idea, Jan! I kept it underneath because I thought if years down the road this fell into someone else’s hands and they uncovered it, they would gat a fantastic little surprise! But I never thought about it getting ruined if something were to spill. Wasn’t that a steal for this fabric, though? She said this fabric retails in the hundreds per yard, crazy, right? Thanks for visiting and taking the time to comment and for the good advice 🙂

Thanks, Christy! I bought a very cute foot stool at a local thrift shop for two bucks…it has age to it…the wood is beautiful, but the fabric is…yech! Now I feel sufficiently confident and inspired to do the make-over.
Christy K. James says
Awesome! This was a super easy way to update the fabric 🙂
