It seems like there are a couple of items that I just can’t seem to pass up when I go thrifting. One of them is frames, and the other is flatware boxes. It wouldn’t be March Madness if I didn’t share a bit of both. Today’s makeover my sweet Friends, #21…can you believe it??, is this flatware box I picked up for $5:
I loved the curvy lines. How could I not shove this in my cart immediately for only $5?
I decided to give this one a bit of a romantic feel:
This French love letter stencil is perfect for adding a romantic feel to this makeover.
I bought it online for this this Empire Dresser a while back, but didn’t receive it in time. Then I tried it on the door of this Antique Cabinet I shared last month, but it looked terrible, so I had to move to plan B on that one.
I was so happy to be able to finally use it on something!
I kept the original hardware, but added this sweet petite glass knob from Hobby Lobby…
This paint color is Annie Sloan’s French Linen chalk paint mixed with about 1/3 Pure White. This is a color that I don’t mind paying big money for since I haven’t been able to find a good color replacement yet for my DIY chalk paint.
Here is the inside before:
That was after removing the velvet lining, and here is what I chose to replace it with…
I love this rose pattern in black and white. It’s scrapbook paper from Michaels.
I cut the pieces to fit and attached them using Matte Mod Podge, brushing it on like a glue.
I usually use fabric, but decided to go with paper this time.
I should have taken a photo of the five other boxes I have in my garage, waiting for their makeovers. (I told you I can’t pass them up!)
Here are three others I’ve shared HERE, HERE, and HERE if you’re looking for inspiration for one yourself.
These chests could be made over so many different ways! I’m loving how this one turned out though, and for $5? Just can’t beat it. 🙂
Here’s a sneak peek at tomorrow’s makeover:
UPDATE: See how sweet this turned out HERE now!
If you’re just catching up from the weekend, I shared the makeover of these 70’s containers on Saturday:
And yesterday I shared this French provincial desk I redid for my neighbor:

It is amazing that it’s day 21! The box is lovely! But I can’t wait to see what you do with the furniture piece for tomorrow. I have one very similar to yours and am thinking of painting it. I eagerly await your creation! Thank your so much for sharing.

I know, Joanne! This month sure is going by quickly! I painted the night stand for a Friend’s daughter. It turned out really sweet. 🙂

Hi Christy. Sorry I haven’t commented lately. My heart has been breaking. We had to let our sweet 14 year old Beagle go. She was my little cuddle bug!! We had 4 Beagles just a few short years ago and are down to 1 now. Hope all is well with yo and yours and I do love the chest you painted and all your posts for March Madness.xoxo
Christy K. James says
Oh I am SO sorry to hear that, Sue. Losing a pet is always so hard. They really become your world, you know? I have a kitty who just turned 18 in the Fall. I know my days with her are numbered. Thanks for taking a minute to say hello. Big hugs. XOXO

Hi Christy- I love your box! In fact, I’ve really been enjoying all your make overs. I have those same exact candlesticks! I haven’t done anything to them yet and I’m not sure that I want them white but it will come to me at some point. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that I use Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray for French Linen. I think it’s pretty right on! I also have the love letter stencil that I used on a dresser. I wish I could send you a picture of it . Great work, Christy! You are always inspiring! -Kris

Thanks so much, Kristine! I made a note of that color too…that’s awesome. I tried another color that was supposed to be a good match, but was too green. If you ever want to share pics, you can email me at christykjames@cox.net or share them in a message on my FB page. I’d love to see! XOXO

Love what you did with the flatware box! Now all I need to do is select a color compatible with the bedroom.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Donna! They make such great jewelry boxes! 🙂

Hi Christy,
I have so enjoyed this March Madness series!! I have been so inspired by your talent! I try to read your post every morning to start my day off being motivated to create something wonderful also. I have learned so much from you and I’m truly grateful, thank you!! But, I’m so going to miss hearing from you everyday once it’s over????
Christy K. James says
Aww thank you SO much, Julie!! That made my day! I’ll still be around, just not every day. XOXO
Regina says
Hi Christy…love the box! Can you share how you removed the velvet lining? I have a jewelry armoire that I picked up and all the drawers have that lining. I haven’t tackled it yet but could use some tips on how to remove it. Thanks so much!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Regina! I just pulled it out. Sometimes the glue can be dry-rotted a bit and it will come right out and other times it’s tougher. Do take care when tugging though, I have broken one at the hinges in the past. I was able to wood glue it back together but now I’m more careful. After I get the velvet out, there is usually a bit of glue or paper reside left that I use a scraper to scrape away. I always choose a patterned print for the interior because it hides any flaws. 🙂
Tonia L. Conner says
Oh, I so gotta find one of these, this is second in line of my list of favorites. I hate to see 31 days come to an end. But I know you still have things going on, I’ll wait, not so patiently.
Have a great day.
Christy K. James says
I’m so glad you like it, Tonia! I sure am going to miss hanging out with ya’ll on a daily basis as well! XO
mimi says
Love all of your projects great job!!! One question when you add the paper inside due you use the mod podge on top as well to protect the paper… Keep up the good work 🙂 Mimi from south Fl
Christy K. James says
Thank you, Mimi! Sometimes I do. You can also add a coat of polycrylic over that coat of Mod Podge after it dries to make it water resistant so you can wipe it down. I liked the matte look of just the paper this time. I actually usually use fabric for these boxes. 🙂
Anne Lathan says
Love the box Christy could you email me with a price?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Anne! It’s $55. 🙂
Rose L. says
I LOVE that box! Perfect for silverware.
Christy K. James says

Eileen says

Christy K. James says

Reallly really pretty Christy from the color to the pretty paper lined interior and I especially love the Francais touch on the top. You always do such a great job on these flatware box makeovers. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the others on the queue in your garage.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I was happy to finally use that stencil on the top! 🙂
