Hello lovely Friends, and welcome to the first day of June! I’m ready to get this Summer started, how about you?
Today I’m sharing my first yard sale find of the season and what I did with it!
If you’ve followed me for long, you know that I have been on a serious yard sale diet for the last two Summers. I had hoarded project pieces like crazy and needed to get rid of what I had.
I have worked really hard to whittle that to-do pile down, so I earned a day of yard saling! I set out first thing a couple of Saturdays ago and the first yard sale I stopped at was a gold mine:
The lady having the sale refinishes furniture as well and was cleaning out her own hoard. There was a dining room set and two round pedestal kitchen tables on the other side of her lawn.
This piece was gorgeous!
Although it looks pretty good in the photo though, it needed a ton of work! It kind of makes me sad that I didn’t buy it any way. She was asking $80 for it.
This is the beauty I scored from her:
The mirror is on the ground behind it, leaning against the garage door. She was asking $50 for it, but I offered $40 and she accepted.
It definitely needed some TLC as well:
I think many of her pieces had been left in the elements. Three of the drawers needed repairs as well. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
This was a beautiful piece at one time, but the neglect had taken its toll. I knew paint was the answer.
This color is Champlain by Fusion Mineral Paint. It’s a soft creamy Winter white.
I think it gives this piece a very elegant feel, if a dresser can be considered elegant.
I had been going through all my supplies and found this color and knew it would be perfect.
I also found a beautiful green shade, which I decided would be perfect to add a soft pop of color to the drawers:
They weren’t in the best shape, so although I don’t usually paint the sides of the drawers, these ones really needed it.
This color is Inglenook, also by Fusion Mineral Paint.
It wasn’t easy to photograph this head-on with the mirror. My camera and I are hiding behind the flowers.
Peek-a-boo!
And yes that is my kitchen in the background. 🙂
I photograph most of my photos in the dining room.
The knobs came from HomeGoods. They are a great resource for hardware in my area.
The coolest thing about Fusion Mineral Paint is that it requires NO topcoat. I was a little skeptical, but I had a hard time just trying to sand the edges on this piece.
That paint was on there good!
My blessings…
This feels like a Summer piece and fits in perfectly beneath my PB Knock-Off Summer House sign:
Another peek at those pretty drawers…
Love those curves!
This was a pretty simple makeover, but the pretty lines on this dresser didn’t need anything more.
Here’s everything I found on my first official yard sale day of the season:
The desk chair ($8) and cradle ($1) came from the same yard sale as the dresser. A nice gentleman who insisted on helping me load my goodies, broke the spindle off the chair. Hoping it’s an easy fix! The bed was a $10 find and the cute trash bin was just $3. A good first day, I think!

Thank you, Mary! They just don’t make them like they used to that is for sure, and I’m such a sucker for glass knobs! 🙂 XO

Dressers can definitely be called elegant. Look at those subtle curves and and straight-sided confidence. Yes…she is elegant.
Christy says
Thank you, Fonda! She is elegant indeed! XOXO

Christina in FL says
Ooo lah lah Christy! I adore this makeover! Perfect color and your wee bit of distressing adds character to this piece which will have a new home fast. The drawers … love the addition of some color there too. Did the drawers slide well or did you have to lubricate them with something?
All those wonderful things at the yard sale, I know it was hard to choose. Sorry to hear about the chair spindle, may it be an easy fix.
Your peek-a-boo wave is fun 🙂 and thank you for the photo of your Blessings, so handsome!
Thanks always for all the beautiful photos and details. Do you ever use D Lawless for hardware? I haven’t yet but have heard good things about them and their prices (online) seem very reasonable.
Okay, I’ve rambled quite enough. Have fun with your new pieces and create on! 🙂
Christy says
I’m so glad you liked this one, Christina! I actually had to repair three of the drawers. The two top ones slide great, but I rubbed a tapered candle along the bottom edges of the drawer and the “runners” inside to help them along a bit. I usually don’t paint the drawer parts you don’t see for that reason, but these were kind of gross. You know I love to share my babies whenever I get the chance. 🙂 As for D Lawless hardware, they are really generous about working with bloggers so a lot of bloggers use them, and although I have not used their hardware myself, I have only heard good things about them! XOXO
Janice says
Beautiful dresser with the curves. Great job and love the drawers painted inside. Of course like I always say, I’m never disappointed with what you do and look forward to every Tues and Thurs.

Thank you, Janice! Those curves get me too! I’ll see you Tuesday! XOXO

Melissa Gustafson says
Hi Christy! I always look forwar to your makeovers! I do have a question. How do you keep your drawers from sticking when you paint them completely? Thank you!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Melissa! I almost never paint the drawer parts you don’t see because I don’t want any issues with sticking drawers. These were just so dirty looking, I had to. The larger drawers were sticking a bit, so I rubbed a tapered candle along the “runners” and the bottom corners of the drawers and that seemed to help. 🙂
Marcie Lovett says
Elegant, indeed, Christy! Beautiful shape and now it’s even better with paint. Love the idea of painting drawers that are in rough shape.
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie!! The paint really hides how dirty looking they were. I wouldn’t have wanted to put my own clothing in them before! XOXO
Josie says
Absolutely Stunning!!!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Josie! XOXO
Jenny Oliver says
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that your newsletter is one of the very few emails that I always look forward to opening. I’m VERY new to furniture refinishing, and have NO idea what I’m doing, but your site is the one I look to for advice and inspiration. Going even further than that, I would honestly have to say that your site alone is responsible for me even being interested in refinishing and repurposing in the first place. Thank you for all your tips and great ideas! PS – Your boys are absolutely gorgeous!
Christy says
Jenny you totally made my day!! I appreciate that so much…it is the best feeling to know that I have inspired you in some way to create!! Really, the best ever! And my babies are such a blessing, thank you! XOXO
Judy says
Dresser is gorgeous! I’m always in awe of curvy drawers. I can’t wait to see what you do with that headboard. I have the same one in the dark recesses of my basement.
Christy says
Thanks, Judy! I love those curves too! I’m thinking the headboard and footboard will be my next bench? We shall see! 🙂
Carole says
Christy, I absolutely love this dresser make-over. You always put so much more effort into your work and it shows. I wish I could visit your booth but I live in Michigan. Maybe one day I will take a road trip your way. Is this one going to your booth or are you keeping it for yourself?
Christy says
Thank you, Carole!! I appreciate that! I wish you could visit too. I don’t have a place for this pretty piece, but I sure wish I did! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Yes a dresser can be elegant and this one sure is! And you are so cute… Reminds me of a funny airplane pic you once took! Hahaha ???? xoxo
Christy says
Oh my gosh yes ha ha! I laughed so hard on that trip home! Can’t wait for our thrifting date next week! XOXO
Annie (Canada) says
Lovely piece Christy 🙂 I love Fusion mineral paint for the same reason, plus they have so many beautiful colours to chose from!
Christy says
Thank you, Annie! I love them too…and the no topcoat thing? Love that!! XOXO
Jan Taborsky says
I am inspired by your work. I am redoing an old sewing machine cabinet. Thanks for all the hints and I would appreciate as many of those I can get. It is so much fun to see what you’ll do next. I have enjoyed the projects of the group too.
Christy says
Thank you, Jan! Glad I could share some helpful tips! Have fun with your cabinet! XOXO
Rose Arroyo says
Love it. Do you really like using the fusion paint? Was considering trying it.
Christy says
Thanks, Rose! I do love Fusion. If I didn’t like something, ahem milk paint, ahem, you would know lol! I say give it a try! 🙂
Julie Briones says
Yes, girl, a dresser can most certainly be elegant, and this one totally fits-the-bill! So, are you liking the Fusion Paint? Would it be easier to do the ‘vaseline’ trick when you paint, and then distress? Can you use it with the Homeright sprayer? (Wow, I’m just full of questions today!);-)
Christy says
Thanks, Julie! I love the Fusion paint. The instructions say to lightly sand your piece before painting, but other than the top of this piece, I totally forgot, and it is on there good. I love the idea of no topcoat the best. I usually use the vaseline trick for pieces that I want lots of areas to show through. It is not as subtle, and for some pieces I just like a subtle sanding on the edges. I would not use this in the sprayer because although the sprayer is awesome, it does use a lot of paint. I prefer to use my DIY paint for the sprayer (cheaper!). And girl, I do not mind the questions at all! That’s why I love to share! 🙂 XOXO
Barb says
The dresser is spectacular! I love it done over in white. I am glad you did not heavily distress it, though. Sometimes too much distressing can just make things look old and dilapidated. I love the glass knobs – the perfect addition to the white paint.
Christy says
Thank you, Barb! I’m not a huge fan of too much distressing either. I want it to look a bit time-worn, but like it was well cared for, and I’m always a sucker for simple glass knobs. 🙂 XO
Cecilia says
Wow, it turned out fabulous! Love the pop of green on the drawers.
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
What a score, and it turned out gorgeous Christy! I love the look of Inglenook, I need to try it. I’ve also had a difficult time distressing Fusion Mineral Paint – I think I’ll stick with ASCP when I want a distressed look. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Jen! Yep Fusion doesn’t distress quite as easily as chalk paint, but perfect if you want a nice clean look, and I love the no-topcoat! XOXO
