Are y’all ready for a thrifty makeover today? I hope so! It’s day #11 in this fun thrifty series, and I hope you are enjoying it so far! 🙂
Today I’m sharing the makeover of an awesome shutter cabinet I grabbed just as it was being put out at one of the thrift stores near my Sister’s house. ( There may or may not have been some stalking involved.)
I knew paint would easily revive this dated looking thing…
…into one heck of a cottage charmer:
Pure white DIY chalk paint and a little distressing in all the right places really do make this cabinet so charming now. This cost me $8, y’all!
Here’s the inside before:
I couldn’t resist adding a fun pop of color…
Isn’t this color dreamy? This is Watery by Sherwin William’s HGTV Home line that I purchased at Lowes last Summer to makeover this kitchen table:
How to Paint a Laminate Kitchen Table
I loved it on that table, and thought it would be perfect here as well.
The original backing was just rough plywood so when I sanded the painted surface, I got this awesome worn effect…
The original shelf was very shallow as well, so I replaced it with a deeper one.
This would be perfect in a bathroom to hold all that junk we rely on to make us beautiful! It would also work in a kitchen, or a home office. So many possibilities. I never pass up a little cabinet when I come across one because they always sell. This one didn’t last a week.
I replaced the original knobs with these sweet glass ones from Hobby Lobby:
I just love how this turned out!

Another great makeover! Does this cabinet hang on e wall? Or is it free standing?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Maggie! I have it hanging on the wall, but it could easily be free standing if you wanted it to be. XO

I am so envious of the deals in your area! We have tons of thrift stores, but many have forgotten that they ARE thrift stores, and when I do see something, it is usually overpriced. 🙁 I LOVE this cabinet, but you sped past changing out that shelf. 🙂 For all of us who would not have the foggiest idea how to do that, could you please explain what it entailed?
Christy K. James says
We have those thrift stores as well that way overprice everything unfortunately, but I stick to a few that still realize it’s a thrift store! The shelf was just sitting loose on a couple of screws when I bought it and it was very shallow. I cut a deeper piece to fit using my table saw (jig saw would work fine too), then after painting, I secured it in place with my nail gun from the outside. Regular nails would work as well. Then I filled the tiny holes it left with wood filler and touched up the paint. 🙂

You continue to amaze me. So much talent.
