Hello lovelies! I have a thrifty little redo for y’all today!
When I find something at a thrift store, I can almost always imagine the end product right then and there. But then there are times when I find something having no earthly idea what I’ll do with it, but I throw it in my cart anyway. Those are the things that sit there in my to-do pyramid for months mocking me.
I bought this shutter over TWO YEARS ago:
People!! That’s more than 24 months I had to dream up an idea for this thing. I picked it up so many times. Do you know how many ideas there are out there for shutters? And that was the problem. I was trying so hard to find a unique new undiscovered purpose for this thing and it just never came to me. And believe me I tried to donate it back, I really did, but I just couldn’t give up on it.
So I finally took charge and just made it into something…
Not exactly the ground breaking revolutionary new idea I was hoping for for this thing, but it’s pretty darned cute, right? And every room in the house can use a cute and functional shelf!
So that’s what I finally settled on.
I found a piece of wood in the garage that was left over from another project to create the shelf.
I spray painted it black first so that the finish would look the same as the shutter after sanding it a bit.
This color is Grey Morning by Behr made into chalk paint.
The shelf is attached and supported by these brackets I removed from another shelf that I scored at a yard sale for $1! (I knew I would use those brackets eventually!)
There were bright gold. I sprayed painted them black first, then gave them a couple of coats of white spray paint, then sanded them a bit.
This is my youngest last Summer…
I stole this picture from my kids’ bathroom. These candid shots are always my favorite…
A few hooks (spray painted white) from Hobby Lobby add more function…
This would be perfect in a bathroom!
Please tell me you also hoard things that you just know you’ll eventually find a use for?
At least there’s one less thing in my to-do pyramid now. 🙂

Such a cute project. I have those piles of “stuff” in my garage too. Once it gets warmer, I hope to tackle a lot of them. 😉
Christy K. James says
Glad I’m not alone! Sometimes I just want to donate it all back and look for new stuff…that’s the most fun part lol, but I know I will work through it all eventually! 🙂

Very nice! Why is it so hard to give up on big dreams sometimes, and just go with what has always worked? Not sure, but I happen to have 2 hinged double shutters out in MY garage that I’ve been waiting for the same inspiration for! Maybe
i need to just use mine too! I do like your color choice…
Christy K. James says
Ha ha I know! I hate to give up on something that I know I can find a good use for! Those double doors sound awesome…don’t give up on those! 🙂

Not to be weird but I could kiss you for this idea!!! I have a full size shutter and 2 small ones that I bought and have been sitting for…well, two years now that I think about it! LOL You’ve given me an excuse to go to the architecture salvage shop to look for brackets and that alone is worth a happy dance!
Thank you SOOO much!
Christy K. James says
YAY!!!!!! A larger one with architectural brackets? Yes!! That will be SO awesome! I hope you find some good ones…good luck!! XOXO

I love how these turned out. I have done a similar project with the window but had the shelf on top. I too love the bookcase and the individual boards making up the back. What is the blue color? As for staging? My rule is… If I like it then it’s perfect 🙂
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Mary! This blue is Watery by Sherwin Williams/HGTV I believe. And yes, I totally agree! If we like it, then it’s just right! XO
Christy K. James says
Oops correction…the bookcase is Serene Breeze by Behr!
Marie, The Interior Frugalista says
Oh Christy, you wanna compare pyramids? I happen to be working on a pyramid project today. What a great shutter repurpose – love it and pinning to share!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha thanks, Marie! I know you have to have a pretty good one going as well with all the beautiful redos you dream up! Feels good to get some of those oldies done! XO

So like the rest of the comments I too have loads of “projects” sitting around, I have a full length shutter hinged door I got for free leaning on a tree, the lady had just put out!! It is stained medium brown.(YUK) The most daunting part is painting louvers!! Any good tips besides a paint sprayer which I do not own?? Love all your ideas and I think you accomplish a great deal as a DIYer with a young family!!
Christy K. James says
Ooh great find! I would spray paint those doors. If you like a bit of a distressed look, the brown stain is a perfect base! It will probably take two coats. And thank you for your sweet words! Good luck! XO
Rose L. says
i have a shutter shelf like yours that I love and got for $20 at a small shop. I knew it was a bargain!
Christy K. James says
Hi Rose! Your comment was in my spam for some reason? I just happened to see it when I was getting ready to empty my spam folder. If you’ve been commenting and I haven’t responded, that’s why. Glad I saw this! That shelf you found was a bargain! 🙂

You took three things off your pile — the shutter, brackets and left over wood and made something fabulous out of someone’s cast offs. Love it!
Christy K. James says
That’s true! So glad you like it, Cynthia. It feels great to be able to make something new and pretty out of throw-aways! XO
BeckyKay says
A great piece! I love how you took pieces from so many places and combined them into a cohesive unit! It’s gorgeous!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Becky Kay!

Hi Christy,
I also have some shutters that I would love to do this with. Did yours have the wood strip thingy on the back that moves back and forth to open and close the shutters? If so, did you remove it? I’m afraid my shelf won’t hang flush if I don’t, but I also don’t want the thing to fall apart on me….
Christy K. James says
Mine did not have that piece, they were stationary. I think yours would fall apart if you tried to remove it, but you could use it with that stick piece facing out.
