Hi friends! It’s day #9 in my March Madness series woohoo!! Thanks so much for following along so far! I appreciate you guys so much for visiting and especially for leaving such sweet comments! If you’re just joining us, I am sharing 31 thrifty makeovers in 31 days. Some are small, some are not so small, but they are all reimagined thrift store, yard sale, and estate sale junk treasures.
For today’s thrifty makeover, I’m sharing an estate sale oddball.
The day I found this item, I was walking up to the cashier to add it to my pile, and I overheard her telling another lady that you just never know what people will buy at these sales. That’s when I chuckled and said , “Like this?” as I handed over this:
A little odd, right? I found it at the same sale I found this desk, this hutch, and this stool. For $2 I knew it had the potential to be something better. This is another piece that had to hang around my garage awhile before I decided what I could do with it.
See why this challenge is so great? It’s helping me get through all these small projects! 🙂
Here is what I did with it:
LOVE.
The first thing I did was cut the top end pieces to a shape that worked better. Then I spray-painted it in grey spray paint I picked up for 50¢ at another estate sale forever ago. (Great resource for spray paint!!)
It looks very blue here, but it’s much more grey.
After a couple of coats completely dried, I dry brushed the entire thing with white latex paint to get a “weathered” look…
For the side pieces, I used scrap pieces of old fencing.
I got a fresh stash from some guys who were flipping a house near my Mom’s neighborhood. They were working on the new fence and I spotted them from a MILE AWAY, y’all! One of the guys asked me what I was going to do with it all ha ha ha. Just don’t you worry about that, Mr. House Flipper.
I just painted them white and rubbed the paint back off right away with an old rag.
They were perfect to finish this little caddy off!
Now it’s actually functional.
Love the finish and it was so easy.
Maybe it had a purpose before that I’m not aware of? I thought maybe it was made to hold milk bottles at one time?
Now it can be used to hold all sorts of things!
This could just sit somewhere looking pretty, or it could be totally functional! For some reason I picture it in a bathroom holding fluffy white towels. 🙂

Thanks, JP! My husband came across my picket fence haul and asked if I needed it, because he was tossing a bunch of scraps. I dared him to touch it ha ha! XO

Still chuckling at your comment to Mr House Flipper. Hahaha! I’ve done the same thing before and the men asked what I could possibly doing with all the old fencing they were glad I was hauling off for them. I don’t have one board left. Need not worry about whether it was put to good use! 😉
Christy K. James says
I had used the last of my stash too so I was so excited to happen upon these guys replacing the fence! I just told them I make things out of them…I’m pretty sure they thought I was nuts! 🙂

i love what you did with this tote. i just wanted to tell you where i saw another tote just like the before pic. It was a caddy for an American Girl doll. The top part was used to hang the clothes from with the little hangers. The bottom part was used to store shoes and accessories. How about that for another use!
Christy K. James says
Oh that makes sense! Love that idea too 🙂

Awesome re-thinking of that UWO (unidentified wooden object, lol.) I think the original might gave been a paper towel holder, like for a garage or something. Is it the right size for that?
Christy K. James says
UWO that’s funny! It very well could have held paper towel! I guess we’ll never know. 🙂
