Hi there lovely friends! I am still catching up from this past weekend in Atlanta at the Haven Blogging conference. It was a total blast seeing all my favorite blogging buddies again. I’ll be back soon to share some fun pics!
Today I am sharing what I did with this yard sale frame, and these old fence pickets I scored from a house that was being renovated:
Can you see the price tag on the frame? That’s one whole dollar. Score! I saw this frame as a tray right away.
I started by painting the frame in DIY chalk paint. Then I cut my fence pickets to length using my table saw.
I have shared several other fence picket projects, but I actually took pics of how I painted the pickets this time yay!
I like to “white wash” my fence picket pieces. To do that , I paint the pickets. (This is just white latex paint.):
Then I immediately wipe most of it off with an old dry wash cloth:
Tada!
Okay so you didn’t really need pics to understand that, but a visual is always nice.
Now they have sort of a beachy feel instead of a found-on-the-side-of-the-road feel. I waxed them to seal them at this point, but a spray acrylic sealer would do just fine too.
I also sanded my frame a bit and waxed it to seal it as well. Then I inserted my pickets into the frame:
These fit the depth perfectly and I was able to put the old backing right back on and secure it back in place.
However, if your pickets are flush with the frame, check out this very similar reclaimed tray tutorial for how to attach them:
Next I added a couple of handles that I spray painted white and then sanded a bit:
The last step was to add felt discs to the bottom of each corner to protect the furniture from any scratches.
And voila!
These handles were $3 for the pair on sale at Hobby Lobby, the frame was one whole dollar, and of course the fence pickets were free so this project came in at less than $5!
I love the coastal feel of it.
You may remember this shelf I did as part of my March Madness Thrifty Makeover Series, using old fence pickets as well:
That project also came in at around five bucks.
I’m always on the lookout for discarded fencing…maybe you will be too now. 🙂

Awesome Christy! I love the beachy feel of the pickets. And the little boat on top is adorable too – think I might have to try to DIY that as well. If I can find some time:)

Super cute beachy tray and I like the vignette you created on it. $3.00 for those handles! Dang, I wish we had Hobby Lobby here in Canada.
Christy K. James says
-Thanks, Marie! I know…Hobby Lobby rocks. The nearest one to us used to be two hours away and we would take a mini road trip just to buy all kinds of hardware!
