Hello sweet friends!! Welcome back! As always, I am so grateful when you stop by! Today I’m sharing this chair that I picked up at a yard sale last Summer for $10:
I often find desks or dressing tables that need a chair to go with them, so I picked this one up just in case I needed one, but I haven’t done anything with it in a year, so it was time to go! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I decided to go darker on this one…
Better, oui?
This one got two coats of Dixie Belle’s Caviar:
Then I decided to add a stencil to the center panel and settled on our house numbers. I used these stencils (the 1.5″ size) and spray adhesive:
I filled the stencil in with three coats of white acrylic craft paint and a small brush and voila:
I removed the stencil as soon as I applied the last coat. Then I used a liner brush to fill in the gaps that give it away as a stencil.
I shared a video this Summer that shows how I add stencils if you want to see that here:
Then I decided to keep going and found this stencil in my stash:
By the way, I’m not affiliated with this stencil company…I just like their stencils. This one also got three coats of white acrylic craft paint. I added the Grande-Rue part on the front of the chair beneath the seat. When everything was dry, I sanded all over, including across all the stenciled areas to smooth everything out using 220 grit sandpaper.
I used my shop vac with a brush attachment to vacuum up all the dust, then wiped it down with a clean cloth.
I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in a satin finish using their applicator sponge…
Try not to overwork the sealer. If you get uneven spots as you’re applying it, it will level out when it dries, or after you apply the second coat. I gave this piece two coats.
The satin finish is not super shiny but almost looks like a buffed finish.
The back got a simple fleur-de-lis:
Now it’s like a sexy little black dress!
I had fun giving this chair a new personality! I hope you enjoyed it too!
And that’s one more done!

WOW, that is so beautiful now! I like it very much, and you surprised me with the black! It turned out very pretty. It is always so fun to see what you will do to your pieces you find, so inspirational!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! I enjoy pulling out the black every once in a while! So glad you enjoyed it too! Have a great weekend!
Petra says
Really lovely – just the right amount of stencilling 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Petra! Enjoy your weekend! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
Good Job!! Love the stencil on the back. I watched your video about how to make a stencil look hand-painted and it is really helpful. I appreciate the tutorial. Now I need to try it but I’ve learned the hard way to do a test run on scraps!! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Christy says
Thank you, Cecelia! I’m so glad you found the video helpful! And yes, it’s always a good idea to test on a scrap when you’re trying something for the first time! XOXO
Kimberly A Johnson says
Do you like the applicator sponge? I thought about buying it.
Christy says
Oh yes! It is a game changer! You can see how easy it is to apply sealer in a video I shared in this post: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/drop-leaf-table-makeover-and-how-to-apply-sealer-with-a-sponge/ XOXO

Nice chair! My husband thinks I have a chair problem because I always want more. (I do, but it probably keeps him from noticing all the other stuff I hoard.) There is a special place in heaven for those who see the beautiful outcome (after some love) instead of seeing an old chair. All of your projects are great and I enjoy them. I look forward to every post….
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Tina!! I am so thrilled to hear that you enjoy what I share! It sounds like we have the same husband LOL! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Christy this is a beautiful makeover! I admit I am a bit surprised, as slick as the seat was, that you didn’t sand it a bit. Go you! It turned out beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! Yep… No need to sand with chalk paint. At least it hasn’t failed me yet LOL. Have a great weekend! XOXO
Shirley says
I love this and I’m thrilled to see you used the dark color! Most everything you do is white or light colors and this is a nice change of pace. Don’t get me wrong, I love all your work but I’d love to see more in the darker line. 😊
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, Shirley! I do love to use dark colors every once in a while, however they don’t sell very quickly in my booth, unfortunately. Black doesn’t do too badly though! XOXO
Ange Mills says
This chair post was a nice surprise, you certainly didn’t use your usual go to paint color this time. I ❤️how it turned out. GREAT JOB!
Christy says
I’m so glad you liked this one, Ange! Thank you! It’s fun to stray a little sometimes! 🙂 XOXO
susan says
Love this chair in a new style for you! Still love all the whites, blues and turquoise’s best tho😉. Do you have any trouble sanding the dark colors? I always have such white streaks. Also, I have trouble when sanding a colored stencil on white furniture. It always smears. Any tips?
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! The whites and blues are my favorites too, but this is a fun change, and black is about the only dark color that still sells for me! Sanding dark colors will leave a hazy look, but that should go away when you wax or seal your piece. I have had paint smear in the past as well, but I don’t seem to have that issue with this brand…Delta Ceramcoat. Give it plenty of dry time and it does well! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Really loving the chair color, and it turned out so pretty! It would be a great piece to put in your entryway or even on the front porch. That little sprig of greenery really dressed it up!
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie! It would be great on a porch…hmmm and I have black out there on mine! You gave me something to consider! XOXO
Jackie C says
Yes! That’s what I figured you’d do with it since it has your house numbers. I love it.
Christy says
Thanks, Jackie! Funny thing…that never occurred to me ha ha! I just used my house numbers for the heck of it! I might have to keep it now! XOXO
Ashley Sovig says
❤️ the chair. Great idea to stencil it!
Christy says
Thanks, Ashley! XOXO
gwen says
you make things look so simple! and this one really would be! last time i counted in our little antiques rooms in the shop, i have 15 vintage chairs! i think i should give up and paint at least one!
Christy says
Thank you, Gwen! Wow, 15? Yep…I think it’s time you had a chair painting party!! XOXO
gwen says
now that’s a fun idea!
Christy says
Yes!! 🙂
Rose Lefebvre says
You make such great stuff! I am in awe of your talent and patience!
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much! Thank you, my friend! XOXO
Kathy M says
I think I am repeating myself (over and over) but your creativity and cleverness never ceases to amaze me! I would walk right by that before chair, but not the after chair! Wish I had your vision. (I can always copy yours though. :))
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Kathy! I appreciate that so much!! Yes…copy away!! XOXO
Addie says
Here’s to trying…..great redo on a mass produced so-so chair. Now it has WOW!!! I always seem to see these types of chairs at garage sales and pass them up….I do not resale…..
AND as we know you are not really a reseller…….just a hoarder with tons of furniture in a mansion!!!! 😉 haha……you might hope this one doesn’t print !!! xoxo
Christy says
Yay!! You got through! Thank you! And ha ha you would be so proud of me…I am working through that hoard at lightning speed woohoo! Well not that fast, but I have so little left in my stash!! XOXO
Julie Briones says
Love the black… I was planning on seeing white, and this was an elegant surprise! 😉
Christy says
Oh yay!! I knew this could be a bleeder and I just didn’t feel like playing that game with this one ha ha! So black it was! Have a great weekend, Julie! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
Your chair looks great with the new color and styling! Sure has unique legs, looks very sturdy. Fess up….how many of the newly re-done pieces have already sold?? I hope everything sells quickly so you can “shop” for more pieces to save! Keep up the good work Christy.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I love the legs as well. I have sold a ton this Summer, so I’ve already been shopping! I took photos of everything today so I might be sharing my new haul on Tuesday! XOXO
Robin says
Hahaha, I read your earlier post when you said this might be a bleeder so you decided to go dark. I was wondering if it was necessary to put on a sealer prior to the black paint because you know I’ve been having trouble lately! This caviar black does not reveal any grayish cast? I ask because I have used a different brand of black and it came out more of a charcoal gray color -not a true black.
IMHO, I would have reversed the address down the center (meaning: have the No. at the top of the chair with the digits running downwards.
Christy says
Yes…ha ha…black for the win! I did not seal prior. Black paints can be tricky…Caviar is a true dark black so no gray cast at all! XOXO
Christy says
Oh…and I added the numbers that direction because I wanted the numbers to fill the larger area of that back panel. 🙂
Deborah Fraser says
I am so in awe of you…..you are super talented and I so love your projects…p,s. I am subscribed to many blogs and yours by far is my favorite…
Christy says
Aww you just made my day, Deborah! Thank you SO much!!! XOXO
Eileen says
I loved the chair you refinished in black with your address stenciled on it. I tend to favor white but it’s nice to switch it up and use black at times. The chair came out beautiful and I don’t think it could have achieved that look in white. Love the whole look of it! Great job!
Christy says
Thank you, Eileen! I agree…I prefer white too, but the black worked out well and was a fun change for this one. XOXO
