Dear friends, welcome back! I am rolling right through this second bunch of thrift store finds!
Today’s makeover is this oak night table I scored for $12 on the same stop where I found this tufted foot stool I shared a couple of weeks ago:
An oak night table with free dirt for only $12? Yes, please!
This poor thang. It was a hot mess and it was SO dirty! If it weren’t so big, I would swear it had Fallen between the counter and refrigerator and had been left there for a couple of years. I’m surprised the people at Good Will didn’t at least wipe it down. It had some sort of dried syrupy substance all down the front, something that seriously stained it on the top at the back, and those flowers you see below the drawers? They were drawn on with magic marker.
I just wanted to bring it home and hug it save it, and that is exactly what I did:
I don’t know what’s up with me and black paint lately, but we’re becoming pretty good pals these days.
I knew this piece had potential!
After giving this thing a good cleaning with lysol wipes, I primed the areas that had stains that I couldn’t remove with wipes using Rustoleum spray primer.
I love the contrast of black and white. This is my go-to white, Bit of Sugar by Behr (Recipe with video HERE.), and the drawers are Liquorice by Country Chic Paint. Country Chic paint recommends a light sanding prior to painting unless you are painting over an already-painted finish or bare wood. Luckily there wasn’t much to sand here.
I still had the plates up from when I photographed the drop leaf side table so that worked out…
The drawers were pretty gross before as well:
I’m not sure I want to know what is spilled inside…it almost looked like blood.
I ended up priming and painting those too, but it gave me the opportunity to add a little something extra for fun:
I love stripes! They always add a little something extra and they are so easy to do. I used the tape as a guide for how far apart to space my stripes.
I used FrogTape for delicate surfaces to add these:
I gave them two coats of the Liquorice, just like the drawer fronts. That paint is so old, but still working great. I pulled the tape off as soon as I added my second coat.
I gave everything a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper, and sealed with Dixie Belle’s clear satin topcoat.
I primed the bottoms of the drawers as well since the fabric I wanted to use had a white background:
I had just enough of this pretty toile fabric left for both drawers. I cut the fabric using my rotary cutter and straight edge, then attached it to the insides with Matte Mod Podge. I just brushed it on like a glue using a cheap chip brush.
The knobs came from Hobby Lobby a few years ago. They’re perfect for this sweet piece!
I painted a couple of dressing tables in black and white in the past and they sold quickly, so hoping this works for a sweet young ladies room!
Another piece down..still a few more to go..

So lovely! Love those knobs.
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! I’ve had those knobs for a long time and it was nice to finally have something to use them on! XOXO
JamieK says
Yes beautiful! ā¤ļøā¤ļø Have a question? What do you do to cut the knobs once you install. The long center pole is usually way too long. Do you use a drummer tool to shorten it ?
Christy says
Yes for those posts that are too long, I either use a small handsaw with tiny teeth and just saw about halfway, then I can use needle nosed pliers to snap the excess end off, or I’ll use the Dremel tool with a small cutting blade on it. That one makes me a bit nervous so I usually opt for the first method! XO
ColleenB.~ Tx. says
What a darling little night table. Absolutely love them knobs. They go well with the table.
Christy says
Thank you, Colleen! I was glad to finally have a project to use those pretty knobs on! XOXO
Sandra Long says
Hi Christy! I just love this table! Black and white is my favorite color combo and I am loving everything you’ve done lately. The knobs are perfect. Another amazing transformation š
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Sandra! I have really been enjoying all the black and white as well1 XOXO
Candy says
So glad you saved this little stand itās beautiful. Love the toile fabric. Thanks for sharing.
Blessings
Candy
Christy says
Thank you, Candy! Me too! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Wowzers Christy, she’s gone from a dirty, ugly duckling to a swan! š Love the black and white. I adore the knobs as well. You always do just a tiny bit of sanding/distressing and I adore it. To me, a lot of distressing makes the piece look like is is a before photo rather than an after.
I’m looking forward to seeing the flatware box… at a bargain price too!
Have a great week!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! I agree…not really a huge fan of the over distressed look. I want my pieces to look a bit worn but like they were cleaned every once in a while lol! XOXO
Janice Holt says
Love the back and white and the stripes on the sides of the drawers. Of course the knobs were the best part. Not disappointed again.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! Glad I was finally able to use those pretty knobs! XOXO
Jody says
Perfectly adorable. Am very depressed as the storagevplace sold my locker instead of the one to go next door to mine. Momās china, grandpas desk everything gone. I want to hurt someone. And they didnāt even know until I called to say March was my last month and Iād be there on the 21 st to get my things. I want to scream and cry and scream some more. I canāt replace her china. And that desk was very important to me. New house and nothing to put in it. I love the nightstand and will be hunting for furniture again. Sorry to say all this. I am hurt beyond words.
Christy says
Oh no!!!! How could that even happen?? I hope you get some compensation, although nothing can replace precious family pieces. I hope you are blessed by finding some amazing pieces in your search to help ease the heartache. XOXO
Sheila DelCharco says
Oooo! What a rescue! Love the stripes, the toile, and the knobs! It has such pretty lines! Iām so glad you gave it new life!
Christy says
Thank you, Sheila! I’m so glad I found this pretty gal! XOXO
Dorenda Dyal says
That turned out really great. I love the stripes on the drawers. But then I haven’t seen anything you have done that wasn’t spectacular.
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Dorenda! Thank you! XOXO
Joni says
I don’t see any oak grain “holes.” How did you manage that?! I had to use 3 coats of aqua coat on my oak cabinets and even then they weren’t smooth.
Christy says
Only the top and the drawer fronts were actually oak, but you can definitely see that on the top when you look more closely. The black paint worked wonders to hide it on the drawer fronts. But it is my opinion that painted oak, even with its flaws, looks so much better than that 80’s golden oak! XO
Joni says
Tru dat! Loved my oak cabinets when we bought our house in 1992. Funny how our tastes change š
Christy says
Ha ha yes!!
Jamie says
This is perfect! ā¤ļø Always love the details !
Christy says
Thank you, Jamie! The details are where the fun happens! XOXO
Jerri says
Adorable! I would need to display it with the drawers open. So cute.
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Jerri! Yes that is the best part. š XO
Ann Williams says
Wish I was near enough to see your booth. I love it when you post pictures of it!!
Christy says
I will have to share another visit to my booth soon then! XOXO
Joni says
Yes, please do! I love all your posts but those are special
Christy says
Maybe I will when I’m done with this haul! XO
Sandra says
Can’t wait each week for your makeovers. Do creative. Very inspiring. Keep up the great work.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Sandra! That makes my heart so happy! XOXO
Esther says
That came out so dang cute. I never knew I liked the black white contrast. Epic!
Christy says
Thank you, Esther! I am really loving the contrast too! XOXO
Cecilia says
I llloooovvveee it! Who knew a gross oak table could look so cute? (You obviously) ???? The knobs are the perfect touch to tie the black and white together. Awesome job!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I had my reservations, but so glad it worked out! XOXO
Kelly Howard says
Absolutely one of my favorites and so different for you to go dark on the drawer fronts! It is simply perfect!
Christy says
Yay! Thank you, Kelly!! I have been enjoying going darker lately! XOXO
Marie says
Aw Christy, you really did give this night table some love. It’s so pretty from head to toe, inside & out! BTW your thrift store haul makeover series are such fun to follow – great idea!
Christy says
Thanks, Marie! Smaller pieces like this are so fun to do…and I am thrilled to hear you are enjoying seeing these pieces one by one. It has actually stopped me from wanting to run into every thrift store I drive past lol! XOXO
Michelle Roberts says
Hi Christy! I love seeing how you repurpose and repaint thrift store finds and give them new life. This piece is beautiful! Would you mind sharing how much you would price this piece for in your booth? I am in North Alabama and considering opening a consignment/home decor store and doing some research on how things are priced. Thank you for bringing us your beautiful photos and tutorials.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Michelle! I priced this for $95. XO
SHARON austin says
The KNOBS!!! They are adorable and really tie it all together…love it!
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon!! I have had those for years…just waiting for the right project to use them on I guess! XOXO
Lisa says
I LOVE this makeover..WOW~~ I just picked up 2 flatware boxes last week and am almost done with one. I can’t wait to see what you do to this one~
Christy says
Thank you, Lisa!! This one turned out really cute. I love these boxes since they can be used for so many new purposes! XOXO
Kathy says
Adore this project – such a brilliant makeover – crisp and clean! Also love the basket on display – is there a previous link to that do over? Love the biweekly projects – so inspiring
Christy says
Thank you so much, Kathy! I did paint that little basket but I never shared it anywhere. I just used white spray primer and then sanded it here and there. Baskets are something I have a really hard time passing up! Glad you enjoy what I share!! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
What a lovely result from such a sorry-looking start! You always see the potential in these unfortunates, Christy. Another beautiful makeover that surely will get snatched up quickly. I have a remnant of that toile from Joann’s (bought a few years ago for a project that went in a different direction) – great idea to line drawers with it!
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I love that fabric. Just when I thought I didn’t have enough left to do much with it, another small project comes along lol. I definitely don’t have enough left to do anything else with it now! XOXO
Alison says
That’s phenomenal, I knew you would make it look nice but you knocked it out of the park!! I wish I had your vision lol.
Christy says
Aww thank you SO much, Alison!! XOXO
Denise says
Ya, it would be nice if thrift stores gave these pieces a wipe down…lol. Love the contrast and those knobs are adorable! Pinned! XO
Christy says
Right?? They could have gotten a little more for it if they had only taken a minute to wipe it down. Oh well…my gain! Thanks, Denise! XOXO
Kimberly says
This turned out so cute!! I love the stripes and the knobs. It is all those sweet little details that make a piece.
Christy says
Thank you, Kimberly! Those extra details are the most fun parts to do for sure! XOXO
Wendy says
Love the makeover!!
Christy says
Thanks, Wendy! XOXO
Donna says
This table is adorable! The colors are perfect and I love what you did with the drawers!
Christy says
Thank you, Donna!! XOXO
Jocelyne says
I just love this! Those knobs! Beautiful. I love the black and white. The draw liner you used. The striping. All of it!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Jocelyne! So glad you like this one! XOXO
Suzan says
Yeah, Dixie Belle topcoat! I just became a Dixie Belle retailer in Pennsylvania all because I tried some when visiting my son in Chesapeake!
Christy says
I love Dixie Belle!! If there wasn’t another vendor in my Antique Mall selling it, I might consider becoming a vender myself! Good for you…wishing you lots of success with it! XOXO
Teresa Smith says
Love all of your posts!! Great ideas and beautiful work.
Moving soon and was wondering how you hung your plates. Not wanting to put holes in the walls as I have spent many hours patching and sanding walls in new home. Thanks.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Teresa! I used paper clips opened up to make an “S” and attached them to the backs of the plates with E6000 glue. Let the glue dry at least two to three days. These lived on our old bedroom walls for several years. Now this will require small nails wherever you decide to hang them. I haven’t tried any command products, but maybe they make something that will work? Good luck in your move! XOXO
Julie Briones says
Gorgeous, as always! Feel free to link-up at Homestyle Gathering, if you have time, Christy! š
Christy says
Thank you, Julie! Coming on over, my friend! XOXO
Diana says
What a transformation! You’ve taken this little nightstand from plain to pretty darn awesome. I love the details you added to the drawers, and the cute knobs add just the right finishing touch. The piece is staged beautifully as well. How did you attach the white plates to the wall behind it?
Christy says
Thank you, Diana! I always enjoy the smaller details. I used paper clips opened up to make an āSā and attached them to the backs of the plates with E6000 glue. I let the glue dry for at least two to three days. These lived on our old bedroom walls for several years and held perfectly! XOXO
Naomi S says
What a stunning transformation! I’m curious to know whether you usually have a vision in mind before you begin working on a piece like this bedside table. Or do you just begin and create the vision as you work? The end results seem to always be fantastic!
Christy says
Thank you, Naomi!! I actually thought I would paint the drawers blue when I started, but when looking for fabric for the drawers, I came across that toile and the plan changed. Sometimes I have a clear plan and other times, projects evolve as I go! š XOXO
Kaycee says
Wow Christy, You really had your work cut out for you on this piece, it was so dirty they should have given it to you for free, lol! But just look at this beauty now, I love the black and white, the toile, and the knobs, , , she is fabulous!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kaycee!! It really was so dirty lol. Glad I was able to give it some much-needed love! XOXO
Petra says
It’s perfect in black & white š I must have a go with fabric for lining the drawers in future projects – I normally use a wallpaper-type paper with Mod-Podge – but I’ve seen some lovely fabrics that are cheaper š Well done once again xo
Christy says
Thanks, Petra! I used to use paper, but I found that with fabric you donāt get those pesky air bubbles! And you can get pieces as large as you like. XOXO
Kim @ Serving Up Southern says
This is such a great makeover, Christy! I love so much about this – the knob, the stripes on the sides of the drawers and that toile drawer liner! It all comes together so nicely! Pinned! Thanks for joining us and sharing at Homestyle Gathering!
Christy says
Thank you, Kim! XO
Robin says
ADORABLY CHIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Robin!!! XOXO
Connie says
Wow! Very striking! I love the work you do and am especially enjoying the ādoing everything from the haulā. I just have to comment on your photography. Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous. Could I ask what camera and lens you are using? I would love to be able to get that quality when I take my before and after pics. Simply beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Connie! I appreciate that! Iām using a Cannon Rebel T5i with a 50mm lens. I have to back up quite a bit to use that lens, but itās my favorite. My next favorite when I donāt have the space to back up is my 35mm. Hope this helps! XOXO
Connie says
Thank you for responding! I have that camera and lens but oddly enough my pics look nothing like yours! Lol You are very talented. I just wanted to give props to you photography skills!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Connie! Do you use yours in manual mode or auto? Manual mode makes all the difference. I took the Shoot Fly Shoot camera course several years ago, and they taught on a Cannon Rebel which was really helpful. I learned just about everything I needed to know in the first couple lessons. Good luck!
Connie says
I am making myself stay in manual. Iām definitkey getting better at it but itās a process for me. Lol You want to hear something crazy? Of all the online photography classes Iāve taken only one and it was Shoot Fly Shoot! I need to go back and rewatch the videos because itās been over a year ago when I watched them. They are what got me to a place where I could start shooting in manual. š
Christy says
Oh funny! It definitely takes practice for sure, but the more you do it, the better you’ll get. I also use Photoshop Elements to edit my photos, so although you can get pretty great photos with just the right settings, there is a lot more you can do with a good editor. XO
Cecilia from Georgia says
Christy, this little table makeover sparks ideas for me and that is why I love your blog. I have 2 end tables that my bro found by the road and he had to build a missing drawer, which matches perfect. Brothers are great, (now that they are all grown up and don’t tattle on me). I can’t wait to try the stripes on the sides of the drawers…such a cute touch. I did see on another blog for painting stripes, that if you paint the edges of the frog tape with the same color of the piece you are putting stripes on, then paint over that with the color for the stripes, that it does not ooze under the tape. The first color seals the tape. Have you ever tried that? I can’t wait to see another silver chest makeover…you always knock me over with your pieces. Have a good “Hump-day”!XOXO
Christy says
Oh yay! How awesome that your brother looks out for treasures for you AND fixes them too! As for painting the frog tape, as long as your surface is smooth, that is not necessary. I’ll include a close-up of me removing the tape in tomorrow’s post so you can see how crisp the lines are. FrogTape is just fantastic! Thank you for your kind works, my friend! Enjoy the rest of your day! XOXO
Debra A Wise says
Such a great makeover! Love the black and white plus the knobs and toile are the icing on the cake.
Christy says
Thank you, Debra! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy!! This little table is adorable, I have one just like it and i’m thinking of copying you but i don’t think mine will look so cute. You always bring things to life. I have TRIED to copy you trays, boxes and totes. I was tearing apart a sliverware box last night remembering you saying that some of these are really built well, This one is built really well so i am tackling it. Do you think i can line over the felt?? LOL
Christy says
Aww thank you, Cheryl. I’m sure yours will turn out just as cute! And yes that velvet lining is in there so good sometimes! I do try to remove it all. Sorry! Good luck! XOXO
Christiane Lavoie says
I love your work Chi sty everything you transform looks gorgeous.
Christy says
Aww thank you SO much, Christiane! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Christy, I just want you to know that you inspire me. I love all the things you do and I just want to thank you so very much.
Your biggest fan
Cheryl
Christy says
I appreciate that SO much, Cheryl, thank you!!! You just made my night! XOXO
Cindy says
What an adorable makeover!! The black and white really update this piece and the knobs you chose are perfect!! I have lined drawers with paper but not with fabric — I will have to give that a try!! Thanks for sharing!
Christy says
Thank you, Cindy! Fabric works great since it is woven…no air bubbles! XO
