Hello dear friends! I’ve got another makeover to share today from my last thrifting haul. Working through these pieces one by one has actually stopped me from thrifting until I get these all done. It is the best thing ever!
I shared a peek of today’s piece on Thursday:
I actually picked up two small drawers and two this size:
The furniture piece they came with must have been in very poor condition and so maybe they figured they could still make money on the drawers. For $6 for the bunch, I scooped them up! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
Also included in my last thrift store haul was this set of wood brackets I picked up for $1.98:
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
To turn these brackets and one of the drawers into this really cute shelf??
Now this could totally be used for a functional shelf, but I actually hung it here in my office above our printer for another purpose…
It will now be holding extra printer paper! My youngest loves to draw and is always raiding my office for copy paper, so now it will be more convenient for him, although it won’t look as quite as cute just holding paper.
To create this one-of-a-kind drawer shelf, I first used these awesome staining cloths to stain the rest of the drawer where the wood was unfinished:
These dry super fast so I can get back to work quickly. I do this so that when I sand after painting, the dark wood color will show through. I painted the drawer and the brackets in my favorite white, Bit of Sugar by Behr made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
To attach the brackets to the drawer I first attached the brackets with wood glue, lining the brackets up at the very edge so I could use the hangers in them to hang the new shelf.
I wouldn’t normally wait for the glue to dry before following up with my railgun, but I did here just so they wouldn’t move on me since I needed to tip the drawer up.
I used my nailgun to drive a couple of nails into the thicker end of the brackets, from the inside of the drawer, and then I hammered in a couple of finishing nails to the smaller end since I didn’t have any shorter nailgun nails.
And voila!
I lightly sanded all over with 220 grit sandpaper and then sealed the brackets and the drawer with Annie Sloan’s Clear Soft Wax. I hadn’t used that in a while and I forgot what a lovely finish the wax gives chalk painted pieces.
Then because the drawer was lined with that brown velvety lining, I needed to add something to cover it. Ya’ll are gonna be so proud of me…
Guess what I used?? Remember I saved the lattice that I removed from this cabinet:
Yep! I found just enough pieces that were the right length:
I wrapped them in FrogTape and then used my miter saw to cut them to the right length:
Then I used hot glue and my cordless glue gun to attach the pieces to the bottom of my drawer:
They worked perfectly!
So here is the finished drawer shelf again:
And a peek at the insides:
Those old lattice pieces worked out so well.
I reused the old knob, but added this decorative piece to the back of it:
The back piece was with another knob I purchased at Hobby Lobby years ago. Both got painted in the same white paint as the drawer and brackets.
A peek at the brackets…
I just love how this piece turned out and that I was able to use not one, but two of my thrifty finds from that haul!
I still have three more drawers to figure out, and a few more things from this haul, but that’s two more crossed off:
In the meantime, I’m working on this table to share with you on Thursday:
UPDATE: No need to come back! See how this table looks now HERE! 🙂

I Love how that turned out, so creative and I love that it is now something super functional. such a great idea. I also love that you used the lattice pieces in the bottom, they are the perfect finish for the bottom of your drawer, no waste. My mom always use to say waste not, want not, I think she would say that to you for this!!
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Mary, thank you! I was so excited to be able to use the lattice pieces! XOXO
Janice Holt says
Now I need this to put in my office. Like your son, my granddaughter (9) is always getting my copy paper to draw. Turned out so cute.

LOVE IT! I have several drawers I’ve been contemplating reusing. I’ll be looking for brackets. Can I ask the drawer dimensions please? Thank you
Christy says
Thank you, Jerri!! The dimensions of my drawer are 13″wide X almost 12″ deep and just under 4″ high. XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I thought a tray, maybe a box…never a shelf! I should stop playing this game, because I always lose. You always have a winning project in the end, no matter what you create, Christy. It really has been fun to see you transform these things (bonus for getting them finished before bringing anything new in ????)
Christy says
Aww don’t stop guessing! Thank you so much, Marcie! And yes I love that this is making me finish what I have! XOXO
Michele D Branham says
Christy, I love this idea. You are so clever!!!!
Christy says

What a great idea, Christy! I love this shelf. I like the white color and the little stained boards on the inside was certainly a clever way to use the lattice and add color to this project. Well done!
Christy says
Thank you, Barb! I was so excited to be able to use those lattice pieces! XOXO
Ange says
I love how it turned out too. Especially how you used the lattice inside the drawer this time. Great job!

Very cool; I want to do some drawer front planters for outside my house under the windows but I haven’t found any decent drawers yet. It’s amazing what you can do with stuff like this!!
Christy says
That would be very cool! Thanks so much, Sharon! XO

Great drawer repurposed into something so pretty yet functional also! ????
I have a table almost identical to yours that was given to me sitting out in the garage,
can’t wait to see your magical transformation! ????
Christy says
Thanks, Kim! It seems a lot of people have these tables waiting for a new look. See ya Thursday with mine! XO
Carol S says
I totally, totally love this Christy! It’s those extra touches that really make the piece. The wood slats inside the drawer are genious! I have a bunch that have fallen out of bi-fold doors. Use them for “risers” when painting, but have plenty more to spare for a drawer bottom. Thanks!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Carol! I never thought to reuse the slats from shutter doors…smart idea! XOXO
Gwen says
What a score on both! I did have an idea of what you would do with them, but of course your finished product exceeded my poor imagination! Love it!
Christy says
Yes great deals! Thank you, Gwen!! XOXO
Addie says

I love everything you do. I really hve enjoyed seeing what you’ve done with this bunch of thrift store finds…but this little shelf!! And what you’re going to use it for!!! My favorite so far!!!! Love it!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Debbie! I’m so excited to get to keep this one! XOXO
Christine says
I actually think that you need some kind of rider inside the drawer/shelf. Items half hidden isn’t the best look. Just a suggestion. I love ve everything you do!
Christy says
Thanks, Christine! I’m not sure if you read the post, but I’ll be using this to hold our printer paper so my youngest can easily access it for drawing. I just staged it this way for photos. XO
christine says
Aaaahhh, clearly I missed that detail! Thank you for sharing your awesome creativity! (And please pardon the typos in my initial, didn’t have the spectacles on:)
Christy says
No worries at all ha ha! XOXO

Becky says
That is stupendous!!! Pretty, functional (and HOW! I have kids opening MY printer drawer 93 times a day too!), pretty, stash-busting, and …did I mention pretty??? I can not believe you snuck those lattice pieces in there too! Gorgeous! You get super-extra-bonus points for that. Great project!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Becky!! YES…I wouldn’t let my son open the printer drawer, so he was constantly asking me to get him paper, so this was the perfect solution! I did steal that clock from my kitchen for the photos though so now I need to find something to hang above it! 😀 XOXO
