Hello, amazing friends and welcome back! Today I’m sharing this shelf that I found for $1.98 at the thrift store:
I found it on the same stop as the headboards I shared on Thursday, along with this gorgeous mirror:
I believe this is an old Home Interiors piece. I made one over just like it several years ago, and I decided to do something similar to what I did the first time…I love the crisp look of the black and white together:
This makeover had a lot of little steps to get to the end result. I realized that when I was attempting to video how I did it. My tripod took a tumble and broke while I was filming so, unfortunately, I was not able to finish videoing the process. That also means I didn’t get quite as many step-by-step photos as I usually do. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
To start, I measured and cut a piece of hardboard to fit the back. Then I took the shelf apart by removing a few screws. I knew I did not want the gold color on the brackets to show through when I distressed, so I gave them a quick spray of Rustoleum’s Espresso..
Then everything got two coats of Dixie Belle’s Cotton:
I used a rag and some water to wet-sand the brackets just as the second coat of paint was dry to the touch. Using regular sandpaper would have taken too much paint off and I did not want the shiny metal to show through. Then I sanded everything else with 220 grit sandpaper.
I knew I wanted to add a stencil to the new back piece I cut and chose this Paris Stencil. Anything I add french graphics to sells pretty quickly in my booth, so that is one reason I reach for them often. After adding the PARIS part, I used parts of the rest of the stencil to add a small flourish to either side:
My favorite paint for stenciling is Ceramcoat craft paints by Delta. I sprayed Loctite spray adhesive to the back of the stencil to hold it firmly in place first, and then I used a small brush to paint in the stencil, brushing away from the edges as much as possible.
Then I went back with a liner brush and connected the breaks that give it away as a stencil. This video shows more on how I stencil:
When my stencil was dry, I lightly sanded across the surface with 220 grit sandpaper.
I sealed everything with DB Clear Coat in satin using their blue sponge applicator. Then I reassembled the shelf and added the new backing with small finishing nails.
I added sawtooth hardware to the back for hanging. I get the ones with screws instead of nails.
The faux lavender came from Hobby Lobby. This is about $20 worth when it was 50% off…
I replaced the original cup hooks with these pretty white ones from Hobby Lobby:
These came just like this already distressed and are much prettier than what was originally here.
It’s a long way from where it started, yes? The hooks were $10 for all five and the shelf was $2, so $12 wasn’t too shabby at all for a cute new shelf! I just dropped it off at my booth yesterday. There are a few of y’all who like to know what I price things for…I have this at $38. If that seems a tad high, I was considering that I had to buy $10 worth of new hooks.
If you missed the first shelf just like this one that I redid, you can see how that one turned out HERE!
I’m excited to cross another piece off the list!

Paris items in our area are no longer wanted. Odd how in different areas different looks are desired. Great makover! Can I ask where you got your Apothecary jars?
Christy says
Thanks, Shaun! It is funny what sells in different areas! The jars both came from HomeGoods! XOXO

Christy, I look forward, with anticipation, to each and every Tuesday and Thrift Store makeover. I am never disappointed. Today’s $2 shelf is appealingly French, Mon Amie. The stencil was a fantastic idea; the finishing touch to another good makeover. Keep them coming, Christy. My crafts file is bulging with your ideas.
Christy says
You are the sweetest, Shirley, thank you!! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Wow, that was a lot of work to take it all apart and rebuild it (and yikes that gold is shiny!). I don’t think your price is high, especially considering the amount of time you invested in it. People don’t realize it’s not just the cost of the materials that goes into determining a price. A shelf like that would cost much more in a specialty store. You wouldn’t even find something mass-produced at Target for that price. I say – charge what you’re worth, Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! You’re right…these are one-of-a-kind pieces too! XOXO
Sue says
So Clever, Christy – I love what you did. You always inspire me! Thanks as always for sharing! Sue
Christy says
Thanks so much, Sue! I’m so glad that you are feeling inspired!! XOXO

Oh my goodness it’s really lovely – and that stencil is gorgeous – just what I need 😀 xo
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Petra! Thank you! XOXO
Robyn Wright says
I can’t even…I love it!
Christy says

Christy,
I just love how frugal you are but then the piece comes out beautiful. I have a booth and you’ve given me alot of ideas. Thanks for including the price as sometimes I think i may be underpricing myself. I really have a hard time with this. I never miss any of your post. Thank you for sharing.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Kathy! Pricing is always a tough one! XOXO
