Awesome friends, welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! If you’re new around here, welcome to my blog family!! I get together with four of my favorite treasure-maker friends the second Tuesday of every month to share good ole trashy makeovers. Be sure to look for their makeovers at the bottom of this post.
Before we get started on today’s makeover, I wanted to let y’all know that this gorgeous blue floral paper:
…is back in stock in my shop! I bought what I thought was a good amount to start, and they all sold the first day! See that mirror makeover HERE if you missed it.
Today’s Mirror Makeover
On to today’s project! I love when I have something really trashy to breath new life into! At the moment, I am two pieces shy of finishing the Biggest Thrifty Haul of them all, and honestly, neither one was very trashy boooo. That’s okay though because it’s still fun to see a thrifty makeover, right?
Of the two pieces left in this huge haul, I chose this mirror that I picked up for $4.25:
Just ignore my pasty legs there!
This didn’t appear to be an expensive mirror, but it had a nice, beveled edge which I liked, and for less than $5, I knew I really couldn’t go wrong.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I started this mirror makeover by removing the mirror from the frame.
I had a decent amount of this Lace transfer left over from this small table I shared recently that I thought could be pretty on the outer part of the frame:
Paint the Frame
When deciding what paint I wanted to use under the transfer, I chose Vintage Duck Egg Blue, and gave the frame two coats:
The coverage on this color is amazing, and I could almost have gotten away with just one coat. I like to lighten this up a bit by mixing it 50/50 with Cotton or Fluff also.
Don’t forget to paint the inside edge of the back as well since you will see that reflected in the mirror
Apply the Transfer
Once the paint had dried completely, I started laying out the Lace Transfer. I wasn’t sure if I was going to try to match up the pattern all the way around or not, but I decided to give it a try and see if I had enough left to do that.
I started along the bottom and up the left side:
To apply the transfer:
- Make any cuts if necessary. I had to make several cuts to fit the frame, and because I was piecing together scrap pieces. I used my rotary cutting set as it makes perfectly straight cuts!
- Peel off the backing and position the transfer where you want it. They are a bit tacky, so they will pretty much stay put once you apply them to your surface. I have found that Dixie Belle’s transfers are a bit more forgiving if you need to reposition them. I don’t know if I just got lucky or not though.
- Once you are happy with placement, use the tool included to burnish (rub with pressure) the transfer to the surface of your project.
- Peel off the top protective layer. If the transfer is still sticking to the top layer, lay it back down and burnish some more.
I was able to cover all but this small section:
I wasn’t able to match the pattern with the two small pieces I had left unfortunately, so I did have to break open another transfer. But, it was awesome that I was able to get almost two decent sized projects done from just the one!
Apply Wax
Once I had the transfer applied all the way around, I wanted to highlight the pretty detailed part of the frame on the inside, so I reached for the white wax:
I used my La Petite wax brush to push it into all those crannies.
Then I took a soft clean cloth and wiped back the wax:
I removed most of it where the transfer was but left in the all the details. I went back about 15 minutes or so later and buffed it to a nice sheen. Wax is a sealer also, so that sealed it as well.
Reassemble the Mirror
I put the mirror back into the frame and covered it with a piece of cardboard I cut to fit to protect the back (nothing was there before). I then used my Logan Point Driver to secure the mirror into the frame:
I love that thang.
I always like to pretty up the backs of my mirrors and chalkboards with patterned kraft paper.
I used Matte Mod Podge like a glue to adhere the paper:
I trimmed the excess with a razor blade. I found this paper on Amazon HERE. I added back the D-ring hanging hardware that was on it originally…
And Voila
Here is how this simple $4 thrift store mirror looks now:
Pairing Vintage Duck Egg Blue with white is always a win in my book!
Let’s see this pretty frame up close…you can see how the white wax really enhances the details:
Do y’all remember this little box?
I cut it down from a stray drawer that I found at the thrift store for 99¢. There were two of them. You can see what else I did with them for Spring HERE!
This would have been pretty even without the transfer, but it adds a little something extra…
I hope you enjoyed this one…there are only so many ways to make over a simple mirror!
Don’t forget my friends have four more makeovers to share with you today!

You are so talented and obviously the lighter pieces must sell but would love to see you do more with the darker colors.

Thank you, Diane! I do sell the lighter pieces much more quickly, but also, they are what I personally enjoy so I so use the lighter colors more often.
