Welcome back, sweet friends! Today I’m back with one of the three chairs I have left in my current haul, this child’s chair that I believe I paid $5 for:
I always pick up children’s chairs because they are usually good sellers. I was hanging onto this one in case I came across a small table that I could match it to. It moved with us three years ago and no luck yet. It is well overdue for a new look!
After going nautical on the dresser I shared on Thursday, I decided to stick with coastal for this piece too. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Prep
The only prep needed for most pieces when using chalk paint is a good cleaning.
For this one, I started with a good wipe down using White Lightning:
The directions say to mix two TBSP into a gallon of warm water, but I half that, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water. If I have smaller pieces, I’ll clean a couple of things while I have it mixed up. This Mr. Clean sponge tub has worked out perfectly as my White Lightning tub. I just marked on the side with a sharpie where the half gallon mark is. Be sure to swap out your water for clean water and give it another wipe down to remove any residue. You can also put it into a spray bottle, but when pieces are especially dirty, I prefer to be able to dip my sponge into it.
Paint
Before painting this chair, I hit it with a coat of Rustoleum spray primer just to get a quick coat of white on it. You’ll see why I wanted a base of white in a minute. (Primer is NOT necessary when using chalk paint.)
Then I brushed on just ONE coat of Dixie Belle’s Dusty Blue.
Embellish
Once the blue was dry, I pulled out a starfish stencil I had in my stash and started adding a few to the seat:
I sprayed spray adhesive to the back of the stencil to hold it in place and then used Dixie Belle’s Fluff to fill it in using a small brush.
I left the stencil in place to dry and then went back to add a second coat. Then I removed the stencil immediately after applying the second coat.
While I was waiting for paint to dry while stenciling, I added stripes to the rungs on the back of the chair using FrogTape. I gave the stripes two coats of Fluff also and then removed the tape as soon as the second coat went on:
I love FrogTape for delicate surfaces for adding my stripes because I can use it over barely dry paint and I always get perfectly crisp lines! (See how I easily add stripes HERE.)
I continued adding starfish to create a starfish pattern on the top of the chair, taking it over the edges also…
The spray adhesive allows it to stay put, even vertically!
I thought some fun wording would be cute on the piece across the front of the chair, but I didn’t feel like pulling out my Silhouette to create a stencil, so instead, I went digging through my stencil stash to see if I had anything that would work and found a saying that I was able to steal two words from:
I would have preferred a chunkier font, but this worked just fine. I used my Fluff and a small brush to fill that in also. Then I went back with a liner brush and filled in the breaks that give it away as a stencil.
Sand and Seal
Once everything was good and dry, I sanded all over using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge.
What I love about only painting ONE coat of the blue, is that sanding showed the white primer beneath very easily, giving this little chair a very relaxed coastal feel!
Then I chose Gator Hide to seal since it might get some wear with a little one. I used the blue sponge applicator to apply it…
The result
This little cutie is a long way from where it started!
The starfish on the seat are classic coastal…
As well as the stripes!
And close up, you can see how nicely the white came through when sanding to give it a relaxed look:
I hope you enjoyed this fun little makeover today!
If you liked this one, you will love this little set!

Shop anouncement
Before I sign off, I wanted to mention that I just stocked Mini brushes and Mini Angle brushes! They are quite difficult for we retailers to get our hands on as they are handmade by a small company, but I managed to get some from their last shipment! These are my two favorite styles to paint with.
Also, Dixie Belle has just released two brand new brushes!!
The first is the La Petite brush:
The La Petite is a wax brush that has a tapered edge that is perfect for applying wax and getting into all those details!
The second new release is the Best Dang Brush:
It is a larger 2″ round brush that is not only fantastic for applying wax, but also for painting in all those details that you find on ornate frames!
They are both available in my My Etsy Shop now!
I’ll be back on Thursday with this silver tray I picked up a while ago:
See ya then! 🙂
UPDATE: It’s done woot woot! See it HERE now!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Oh Christy, this little chair is so adorable! Brilliant putting down the spray paint underneath! These are the details that make your artistry stand out!!
Love the stencil!
By the way, if you use magic erasers a lot, I bought some one Amazon that are the same melamine foam but seem to be more durable than the name brand but cost a lot less. So far I am really liking these.

What a cute little child’s beach chair or ‘time-out’ chair.
My great grand daughter does not like sitting in time out, but just maybe if I do up a child’s chair to use as a ‘time out’ she just may not mind being in time out for short period of time.
Wonderful inspiration as always.
Today Is A Good Day To Have A Good Day. Enjoy it & embrace it.
Take care & stay safe.
Christy says
Ha ha just like a grandma to make time-out a bit more enjoyable! That is so funny! Thank you, Colleen!! XOXO

What a cute chair it turned out to be. Someone will grab that up quickly for a child’s room. I can just see a child sitting on it at a table with their coloring book and crayons. The color, the stripes, and starfish are perfect. Looking forward to Thursday. I’ve been waiting to see what you’re going to do with that tray. See you then.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! Ooh yes…perfect for a coastal-inspired bedroom! Hoping it gets years of enjoyment from a sweet little one! See ya Thursday! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Love the blue distressed child’s chair. The stripes and starfish really give the chair that coastal vibe. Any child would love to have that chair to sit in whether it is in his/her bedroom or at the beach house! The distressing adds to the look as well. I also peeked at the child’s table and two chairs. Love the combination of dark blue, white and the gray wash top! Can’t beat that combination. I am positive someone will snatch that one up right away for a child or a grandchild. As always, you give me so much inspiration! Thanks and have a wonderful and safe week.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sue! It is so fun to redo children’s furniture and imagining the fun they will have with it! Isn’t that table and chair set sweet? It is one of my favorites! Have a wonderful week also! XOXO
Niki says
I enjoy a coastal vibe! Hebrews 6:19 is one of my favorite scriptures so I have anchors on some pieces spread around my house.
One thing I’ve been meaning to ask you is if the spray adhesive ever leaves a residue behind? I’ve never had any luck with it so I don’t use it. I have cut stencils out of contact paper though and that has worked great.
Christy says
The spray adhesive does leave a sticky residue behind, but once you rinse the paint off, you can leave it to dry tacky side up and then attach it to a piece of wax paper to store it until the next time. It really helps prevent any kind of bleeding under the stencil. XOXO
Meg says
That is adorable. If I still lived in Florida, I would have to steal that idea. Now I need to think of a Texas spin for that one.
Christy says
Thank you, Meg! Hmm…I’m stumped on that one lol! XOXO

I LOVE it! Again, why more people can’t see value in things rather than throw them away–I just don’t get it. Thanks for being someone who sees beyond the surface and knows there’s more lurking underneath, waiting for some tlc. Hmm…I just described my looks. Can you do people makeovers? LOL! Keep up the great work!
