Hello amazing friends! Who’s up for another chair makeover today? I couldn’t believe that when I counted all the chairs in this haul, that I had seven of them! This is the seventh and final chair makeover of the bunch!
It was a deal at only $5 at the thrift store:
I loved the shape of it and knew it would paint up so cute! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Prep
I started with a good cleaning using White Lightning. I actually cleaned it at the same time as cleaning the cane chair I shared on Tuesday.
Next, I popped open my small spray shelter and gave this chair a quick spray of Rustoleum spray primer:
This smaller shelter is great for smaller items, but barely held this chair. The medium sized one I used on Tuesday is quite a bit larger. I mentioned on Tuesday that with chairs, and many small things also, I like to give a quick spray with primer just to get a quick coat of paint on. That reduces the number of coats of paint I will need to brush on, which is a great time-saver!
Paint
I decided to keep this one simple, and I knew I wanted to paint it a pretty aqua color. I mixed a couple of colors before that gave me a beautiful shade of blue, but instead of finding that post and looking up the amounts I used of each, I just started pouring.
I combined The Gulf, Vintage Duck Egg Blue, and Cotton right into The Gulf jar:
I love The Gulf, but I didn’t want as bold a color as that, so I ended up mixing about 40% The Gulf, 40% Duck Egg Blue, and 20% Cotton to lighten it a little.
I love the resulting color! This is just one coat over the primer:
We were having a new HVAC installed this week, and the guys were in and out of my workspace in the garage, so I ended bringing this chair into my office to paint. I loved having a warm space to work in!
Sand
To sand, I headed back out to the garage! I used 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge:
I used my shop vac and the brush attachment to remove the sanding dust:
Seal
To seal and protect the finish, I opted for Clear Coat in Satin and applied it with the blue sponge applicator:
The sponge works so well on those spindles that would be very awkward with a brush.
You should get many uses out of one sponge. I just clean mine by rinsing well with warm water. Then I squeeze out the excess water with a paper towel and allow it to air dry before putting it away.
The result
This little cutie didn’t need anything more!
A simple paint job can do wonders!
I distressed it in all the right places to reveal both the white beneath and some of the wood.
This would be super cute in the corner of a bathroom to hold towels or your clean clothes while you shower.
I absolutely love this custom color mix!
I mixed almost a whole 16oz jar, so you will definitely see this one again!
I hope y’all enjoyed this simple makeover today!
And that is the last of the chairs!

Simply beautiful now. Wow that one was the easiest chair you have re-done. Don’t you just love simple! I sure do, thanks for the inspiration!

I love mixing colours too 🙂 I like how the timber and the white undercoat came through together – it adds that extra oompf! I’m off to buy a little 3 drawer bedside table tomorrow and wondering what I’ll end up doing for my weekend project!!! Have a great weekend – bye from Australia 🙂

Christy this chair is so charming and such a steal! You mixed up a beautiful color. I can’t wait to see where you use this color again.

I love this color combination; I may have to steal it for some projects of my own. Chair turned out so cute!! Thanks!
Christy says
Steal away ha ha! Thanks, Sharon! XOXO

Beautiful! Such a pretty blue! I have a goal this spring to paint all my dining room chairs. They are mismatched, and a unifying color would really improve the look. Until there are fewer rough and rowdy boys living here, we’re sticking with the mismatched look, haha! 😁 Bring on the warmer weather and paint!
Christy says
Thank you, Becky! That sounds like a good plan! And you have all boys, right? Yes, I would be waiting too ha ha! XOXO
Becky says
Well, not ALL boys… we have a couple sisters for the 7 boys. 😁 And hey, one has gotten his own house and is wearing out his own chairs now!
You have a good memory!
Christy says
Oh ha ha…gotcha! One done, eight to go lol! Have a fantastic weekend!! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
I love your chair makeovers! This color is particularly striking on this chair. Simple, elegant, and would be a great place to sit and work at a desk or in a nursery! Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! I’m so glad you enjoy them! I love this color on this chair too…might be hard to let go of this one lol! XOXO
Michele M. says
SOOOOO cute, Christy! I absolutely love that color, too!
Now I have a question for you. I have a very old chair that has been stained and waxed – and I’d love to repaint it. How is the best way to do so with the stain and so much wax already on it? Sorry such a newbie question. Been wanting to redo for years, just wasn’t sure how to go about cleaning it up properly. I don’t hate it – looks like driftwood – but just wanting something more fun since we added a gorgeous blue accent wall in the master bdrm and the chair looks dull now and not matching the cabinets or bed. TY! Hugs.
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! If it is water based wax like Dixie Belle, you can just repaint right over, but if it is an oil-based wax like Annie Sloan, you need to remove the wax first using mineral spirits. You can buy odorless mineral spirits at Home Depot, etc. Once you have all the wax removed, you are free to paint! Good luck! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
The color is so pretty! You have done it again. Great job!

Thank you so much, Rose! XOXO

Hi- I am new to chalk paint, and have a question regarding the clear coat. The instructions on the bottle say to apply with a brush but in your posts you do not use a brush but use the blue sponges. I am assuming it is okay to use the sponge but thought I’d make sure it was fine to apply the clear coat with the sponge. Thanks for your reply.
Christy says
Hi Sharon! Absolutely! I love the sponge for applying the Clear Coat! You can see how I do it in this video: https://youtu.be/pCRUk48l5tQ You can also use a brush, but I think the sponge is easier. 🙂

Love, love, love this! Appreciate all the steps and supplies you use.
